A tip I've seen about doing ultrasonic cleaning with IPA: Place the parts to be cleaned in a heavy duty zip-loc bag and fill it with IPA, then put that into the sonic bath filled with regular water. Safer and also massively reduced the amount of IPA needed.

Water with a bit of rinse aid can work very well. Rinse aids are water wetting agents that reduce water tension which makes water a more aggressive cleaner...

Word of warning: the ultrasonics can cause you some injury if you're too close while they're running, so leave it in another room with the door closed. Also, don't do it on anything that you care about the surface of, just in case.

I use ultrasonic cleaners at work for emission measurement equipment. Those stuff is usually gunked up with diesel soot and condensate of all kind. Really nasty to clean up. We are using Loctite 7840 at around 50°C to clean that stuff up and it makes everything shine like new without being aggressive to plastic or rubber parts. Great stuff

Jay, I hope you’re aware that those fittings can be re-plated, it’s not that difficult to do. If you’re not comfortable doing it, you can take them to a commercial re-plating company to do that for you. It’s not that expensive.

For the radiators, you can setup a loop with a cleaning solution and have it running while the radiators submerged are in the ultrasonic chamber. That should help to remove / clean the radiators, since the ultrasonic waves will propagate to the solution inside then as well. At least in theory... 🖖

I would want to use an 80Khz cleaner for doing a block, just because the cooling fins can be so close together and so fine. But don't put one in a 27khz one, it will chew up those fine cooling fins.

I use to work for a biochemical/pharmaceutical welding company that ultrasonically cleaned mostly 316L and Hastelloy before and after I would weld it. Strips of copper were attached along the outside and inside of the various components to help draw impurities away from the stainless steel. It was a trade secret 25+ years ago when the company was doing it. With fixtures that were too long they would clamp copper strips across the length of the tubing, dip the bottom half into the tank and then pour solution down the length of the tubing to get them clean.

Seems like it would be a good idea to at least quickly rinse all the parts out in distilled water (or whatever the best cleaner is) right away before storing the parts. So the fluid doesn't dry out. But of course, none of us are perfect. :)

Ive used hot water, soap and vinegar to clean my custom loop accessories for years but lately Ive swapped to olive oil and a gentle toothbrush. Its a massive difference and it becomes like new. Even plexi gets extremely clean. Ive never seen anyone mentioned using oil to clean pc water cooling parts so why not. It has amazing properties to remove residues and pastel colors. Jay, at 8:29 its probably copper sulfate. My system recently got dark blue for some reason. I thought immediately of oxidation but that doesnt turn the water into deep dark blue ocean or Blue Soda color. Apparently effective, works like a growth inhibitor

I have that exact ultrasonic cleaner. I filled it with water, and then put one of those stainless pans with a lid (like the ones people use at a buffet) inside and that has the cleaning solution in it. This keeps the main ultrasonic cleaner pan clean. Mine is for 3D printing :)

I use my ultrasonic cleaner for motorcycle carbs mostly but it also does great on nuts, bolts, and pretty much anything you want to throw in there. I make sure to use Dawn dish soap on aluminum parts because its PH neutral and doesn't cause discoloration.

If you're still digging around for content, leak testing, hunting and fixing would be something. The last time around I build a custom loop the air pumps weren't a thing and it was relatively easy to find where the leaks were coming from.

For the radiator you should have the fluid pumping through it while cleaning it so that anything that gets freed will flow out of the radiator. i would probably also use a slight vinegar solution for the pumped fluid when cleaning it.

I use one to clean the strings of my bass guitar, but only with mild heat up to 40 C (too much heat destroys the sound characteristics). They sound 90% as brilliant as new strings after cleaning, and that can be done more than once. Has saved me a LOT of money in last few years. A set of the strings costs between $30 and $60, depends on quality, for me mostly around $45 because I have a 5-string bass.

For the radiators, you can connect a submersible pump or just connect a standard pump and route some hoses into the tank to get some fluid flowing through the radiators. Have the pump pickup hose somewhere in the bottom of the tank and the other hose on the radiator. After flowing in one direction for about 15 minutes reverse the lines so you blast chunks through the other side of the radiator. This method is used to reverse flush piezo printheads while also ultrasonically cleaning them.

I've seen a few youtube videos where someone had restored/upgraded some older Gameboys where the alkaline battery corrosion ate it all off of the contacts. Also another tip for people looking to using some form of alcohol to clean things in a sonicator, dilute it with water, preferably DI water. You don't need a ton of alcohol to get the job done, because as you said the sonicator does a lot of the work. Also check to make sure what you are cleaning won't be damaged by the alcohol you are using. It can strip protective coatings or melt plastics.

Ziploc's are your best friend. Put your parts and solvent (or soapy water, etc) into a ziploc and just keep regular water in the cleaner. Leave a small amount of air and it'll float, keeping the parts approximately in the center of the cleaner, where it works best. You can cut the corner to drain the solvent for easy cleanup. Also, fill the cleaner right up to the fill line so it works efficiently.

per my chemical engineers at my work they recommend running a 0.1% to 0.5% solution of Critic Acid with water for 15-20 in your loop or sit in the radiators to help break up coolant or built up calcium on internals in the rad. worked great in my build.

Since you mentioned it and called it out as nickel plating. Chrome plating is a transparent layer .05 to .5mm thick that's applied on top of the nickel to protect it from corroding. So you'll have nickel plating then a chrome plating applied on top of that. If you're chroming plastic, you'll apply a layer of copper then nickel then chrome. Spent one summer internship working towards my Chem Eng degree in a 110F plant breathing in those fumes. It was great

the casing of the radiator is a barrier isolating the sonic waves from penetrating the inside. try laying the rad down flat in the sonic cleaner to fill it with water then lift the back 90deg with the fittings submerged, that should trap the water inside the radiator. then with the radiator upright the water should be able to get a pathway inside the rad.

Saw someone else mention using other fluids in sealed jars (for them it was CLR) and putting the canning jar or other sealed jar in the water in the bath so it would keep different chemicals separate but let them work on the objects inside of the jar. Jay. Use 50/50 Mean Green cleaner and water for your rads. Also wire the rads up so they are suspended in the fluid. I know the basket is supposed to do that. But the rads are too heavy, but if suspended it will work great. They make ultrasonics big enough for V8 engines. It'll work!

Just curious, have you ever tried using tig welded stainless medical grade tube for a water cooled rig rather than plated. im a pipe welder i just thought it would be cool theme and no nickel flaking off. the parts cleaning video gave me the idea and not to mention the blue gold colored tig welds at every joint. like for a work station build for running cad and cnc equipment in a machine shop. thanks for all the knowledge. cheers

To make the fittings brand new bring them to a company that strips off the metal paints and platings using harsh chemicals so it ends up bare metal and they can replace nickel plating back on it so all the fittings have equal amount than having mixed amount causing flakes breaking off at an early stage. That why old vintage cars and bikes have nickel and chrome plating done on them

I just bought an ultrasonic cleaner for when I was cleaning a GPU that was around a person who smokes Wax/Dabs, its temps were pushing 80⁰C idle. So I used alcohol and it cleaned it spotless. Previously nothing else would work to get the crud out of the middle of the rad.(Did not use the heating element)

You can put just water in the ultrasonic cleaner then put your parts in a jar or other container, then add your solution or solvent to the container. saves on using so much solvents and you won’t have to worry about lots of fumes

Also make sure that the radiator is filled and no trapped air. Because any air bubbles will slow ultrasonic waves. I also agree since you trying to clean the inside of the rad then direct contact with the base will transmit waves to inside better, but it may also cause some paint from radiator where it contacts the base to be worn off or come loose depending on how long it is left in there

Best idea is to set the radiator at an angle fill it up with the cleaning fluid so that way the vibration can bounce upward knocking down the bits to the end tanks so it be able to get it out more than letting it flat is my guess.

Around the 7:15 part of the video you mentioned that the fitting was starting to turn black. As I mentioned before that’s due to electrolysis that causes the nickel plate to come off. Any plumber will confirm what I’m saying as if you ever come across copper that turned black you know the pipe has become paper thin from electrolysis occurring. Since it’s a closed system you get a buildup of the copper/nickel that has worn off and the coolant is not abrasive as you said in the video.

I actually have a method for the radiators and I know this will work because I've seen it done with similar components on different pieces of equipment, take two buckets of water or one bucket and a drain. You're going to have a clean side and a dirty side and you're going to run water through these radiators in an open cycle. Pump goes on the clean side pushing water through the radiators. Radiators are submerged in the ultrasonic output goes into a drain or another bucket and you just run it until it's clear

Quick tip to save on having to clean up the tank: you can put the parts in a glass mason jar with whatever cleaner in the tank with just water.
