This is why you are a great (rather than just 'good') guitar teacher. You take the holistic approach & realise it's all about your mental & physical state, and guitar is just an extension of that. I wish I had a teacher like you.

Music is very humbling. My ego is destroyed constantly. Sometimes I almost regret 'wasting' so much time on it because I make the mistake of comparing myself to others. This style of video is really good therapy and a highly overlooked necessity for people trying to improve.

Just want to relay this message from a beginner in his 40s. I started playing guitar in November and it has done wonders for my confidence. For whatever reason I never thought I could play an instrument or learn music. For decades I talked myself out of learning till I finally challenged that assertion and yeah.. being wrong never felt so good. The joy learning guitar has brought me is hard to convey. I don't feel any shame or discouragement from not being able to play what I want immediately, those are just goals to chase. I've played every single day for the last two and half months, whether it's productive or efficient, I do not care. It makes me happy. Learning simple melodies and rhythm has meant the world to me. The first song I learned to play was Nutshell by Alice in Chains and it legitimately made me emotional. To be able to play something so meaningful to me after having convinced myself I'd never be able to learn music has significantly changed my perspective on what I can do in this life. Music is the most underrated, taken-for-granted thing on this Earth. I would recommend learning music to everyone and anyone. Don't stop yourself and don't let anyone stop you. There's no fault in ignorance just in complacency or subservience to it. Thank you Mr. Fujita for the excellent videos and for sharing your personal experience. You're an amazing teacher and your passion for music and guitar is absolutely contagious. 🙏

When I saw the title of this video, I knew it was for me. I came out of a bad drug addiction years ago, and I had played guitar for many many years but I did it with the assistance of drugs and amphetamines and stimulants. I would write awesome compositions and the next time it came around to play it, I would have difficulty doing it again unless I did more drugs. So I'm finally sober now, it's awesome, I love my life, I love being a morning person, But something that has stuck around from the years of abuse that I did to myself, is now I feel like I am having to relearn how to play and right from my heart, and it's difficult, and sometimes I feel my confidence level sinking and my inspiration sinking, Like I'm almost ashamed that I used to be such a good innovative guitar player, and I guess I abused my talent and now when I try to practice and family is in the house, that's when it hits me. It's not a completely sad story though, I am slowly coming out of this and getting better Tomo Fujita music videos have been an inspiration to me in this subject. I will leave you with this: -drugs really are bad, That's not just a cliche thing to say - You can get off them and life is so much more pure and better without them but it takes heart - Don't compare yourself to others, you are amazing how you are, don't do that with your guitar playing, it damage your CONfideNCE! - Don't mix hard drugs and guitar, it's not a good thing, there's a reason all of our favorite doped up guitar heroes died young!!! Peace my friends. I hope you find a peaceful moment and some tranquility amidst the inevitable struggle today. Have a great day, have an awesome day, make it count

Hey Zac, I'm Zack and I just wanna tell you I was in the same or similar boat as you. I started playing guitar in high-school and by the end of high-school I basically had recorded 2 albums/E.P.s and my future was looking bright. Well I decided to make bad decisions and honestly I feel like it was important that made such poor decisions or else I would have never learned. I ended up homeless a few times and had to crawl my way out of my own grave. In all my years of drug use I always thought that they enhanced my guitar playing, but it really didn't a lot of the time. If your thinking about your next hit while your playing a solo it might not be working the way you intended. But anyways I'm clean and sober (aside from 420 of course) and have been making my absolute favorite music of my life so far this past year and I'm so excited to release it and I did it completely without any hard drugs involved. It is certainly harder for some people to cope without substances but what helped me was coming to a realization that it was either drugs or me, one or the other but I couldn't choose both. Anyways I would start meditating, praying, and thinking to yourself and perhaps out loud to God, she will guide you and grant you the creativity you desire. Sometimes when I have very little inspiration it's because there's something wrong emotionally with me that I need to take care of. And ask yourself when do you truly love playing guitar the MOST? Like what is your favorite aspect about the guitar/music? We gotta focus on those aspects instead.

You were not playing before. You were riffing- and it sounded good but you were clueless. You probably play "better" now- even if it does not sound as good for now. Check out Zombie Guitar too- Brian is a great teacher. I learn from many instructors- love Tomo, Brian and GuitarTricks too. Learn some theory and stay clean man- good job so far!

@@zacksguitarhacks6390 Stay off all drugs my man. These days even 420 gets laced with garbage and you are right back as an addict. You know what is really cool to get addicted to- as in I am a full on addict...nutrition and even some exercise. I can't get enough. It's no different really- it's just obsessing on one thing or another. I have better side effects though and far better labs! Try it- you might like it. Just change your obsession. Keep rocking!

Playing guitar can help you go through anything. I moved schools around the same time the pandemic hit. I didn't have any friends to talk to and I was mostly alone. I started playing guitar around the same time and your videos helped me so much with chord progressions and techniques. Instead of feeling sad, I would play guitar. It's helped me so much in isolation. Now, I am obsessed with neosoul and mathrock and have formed a band. I have many friends who I've connected with through music. Thank you Tomo.

Yes sir! This applies to so much beyond music, thank you for putting this out. I really believe that negative "self talk" is so dangerous. The mind is a garden and if you plant bad seeds (negative thoughts or self talk) then you grow bad fruit. Good thoughts = good seeds and yield good fruit. For anyone reading this, I hope you can embrace your goodness and push all the negative thoughts away. You are all wonderful people and we are all very lucky to be here. Life is full of ups and downs and we all lose confidence from time to time. Your suggestions, 'be kind to yourself, don't expect too much' etc. are all very important. I would also add the idea of seeking support and inspiration from others. You alone can make changes, but you can't make changes alone. So many great thoughts and suggestions in this video. Tomo, I strongly agree with you, I used to be very worried about not being able to play better and keep improving my musicality, but then after struggling for a while, I learned that my expection is too high, and I just waste so much time worrying rather than enjoying the music and the happiness of playing music. To live in the moment and slow down, concentrate on the present, is much more efficient to feel the music, to experience the emotion music generated and gradually building a firm and strong foundation is so important! Thanks for sharing and your positivity!

Thank you so much for your words Mr. Tomo. For me guitar is just a hobby, but my real passion is photography, and lately I have been feeling very unconfident in my skills in photography. Your words resonate with my heart. Your advice not only applies to guitar or art, but to life.

Excellent wisdom. I think your occasional laugh and chuckle speaks for itself- you don't take things so seriously, that it depresses you into inactivity. You choose the right profession as a teacher. Been through years of burnt out teachers that just want to go home and forget about connecting with a student. Thanks Tomo!

I am not good at guitar and can't do most things, but when I begin to lose confidence or become uninspired, I go back and relearn things I already 'know'. Sometimes, this helps me realize how far I've come, because I remember how hard something was to learn the first time and it also inspires me to take that thing and try new variations that I can build on.

Thanks for sharing! You don't need to do everything very well. Try to learn one thing really deeply. That's so important. You are awesome! Great passion so you can learn. Please don't worry at first. Everything is fine. We need FOUNDATION.

I'd like to say that Your attitude really helps me out a lot from my mental problems because I always compare myself to others since I started to play guitar. After I accidentally clicked your video (maybe triad / blues smth haha), You inspired me a lot, Now playing guitar is my happiness and I also love jamming with my friends tho. I think everyone has different sound and language(in music) so It's really good to learn and hear it without hating or comparing. Thanks for teaching me this grateful lesson!

So happy to hear that. Please guitar for your happiness and no need to compare with others if you feel something less. I only respect & admire other guitar players and they are better than me so I get more inspiration from others. There are so much aspect on guitar playing and so easy to caught up with "I want to do everything!" So I use "Limitation" in good way! I cannot do everything so I picked a few things I am great at. You're very welcome! I am so happy to be helpful to others.

@@TomoFujitaMusic I have a question.. For 45+yrs I have played 25.5" scale guitars, starting with Fender and, for the last 15 or so, Ibanez. I recently discovered "short scale"(24') guitars, and I am obsessed. I recently bought a Squire Super Sonic and a Sterling Cutlass. I now have BIG HANDS! Other than my guitar-playing buddies deriding me for playing "kids' guitars," I don't care; for me, it's a game changer. I struggle with Hendrix-style hammer pull ornaments or any regular big-hand technique. I have small hands, and I just had to live with.....until now....I think. My question is simply this: Is there a downside to playing short-scale lengths?

First off, Tomo, I don't tune in to your channel first thing in the morning to be reminded that I'm human. I need a long, slowly creeping awareness of that fact to (hopefully) give me time to grab a bottle of something. But, aside from that, this was another great video and your minor blues/jazz licks are tasteful and done with a fair amount of "touch," which is essential. Keep up the good work. Oh, and one more thing. You forgot to remind everyone that being confident is often secondary to _looking_ confident. Simply act confident, even though you be dying inside; because reality follows from that. Act as if, and eventually it begins to _feel_ real. You're awesome. So there's your boost of confidence for the day. ;)

So grateful and so right on time with your kind words with holidays abounding that hits different for everyone (🎶 is that all there is... is that all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing 🎶🤣) Losing confidence triggering self-doubt, normal human emotions, it's nice to have an artist echo these sentiments. Once the struggle is gone the growth withers... Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall help remind me to keep on keeping on 😝😊 thanks Mr. Fujita

Happy Thanksgiving Tomo. Thank you Cassidy for the great idea 💡! At age 68 I have been through all those feelings and issues. Tomo health issues visit All humans and those issues will have an affect on you musically. I have heart disease and other issues that took my vocal gifts. I am working to get the chops back, but guitar is the greatest therapy. I depended on my vocals to cover my bad guitar. Now I am focusing on guitar to cover up my affected vocals! :) It has been great therapy and though I am more of a C&W guy you have opened my eyes and mind to other music styles. Love it! Thank you 😊
