This is why you are a great (rather than just 'good') guitar teacher. You take the holistic approach & realise it's all about your mental & physical state, and guitar is just an extension of that. I wish I had a teacher like you.

Music is very humbling. My ego is destroyed constantly. Sometimes I almost regret 'wasting' so much time on it because I make the mistake of comparing myself to others. This style of video is really good therapy and a highly overlooked necessity for people trying to improve.

Just want to relay this message from a beginner in his 40s. I started playing guitar in November and it has done wonders for my confidence. For whatever reason I never thought I could play an instrument or learn music. For decades I talked myself out of learning till I finally challenged that assertion and yeah.. being wrong never felt so good. The joy learning guitar has brought me is hard to convey. I don't feel any shame or discouragement from not being able to play what I want immediately, those are just goals to chase. I've played every single day for the last two and half months, whether it's productive or efficient, I do not care. It makes me happy. Learning simple melodies and rhythm has meant the world to me. The first song I learned to play was Nutshell by Alice in Chains and it legitimately made me emotional. To be able to play something so meaningful to me after having convinced myself I'd never be able to learn music has significantly changed my perspective on what I can do in this life. Music is the most underrated, taken-for-granted thing on this Earth. I would recommend learning music to everyone and anyone. Don't stop yourself and don't let anyone stop you. There's no fault in ignorance just in complacency or subservience to it. Thank you Mr. Fujita for the excellent videos and for sharing your personal experience. You're an amazing teacher and your passion for music and guitar is absolutely contagious. 🙏

Playing guitar can help you go through anything. I moved schools around the same time the pandemic hit. I didn't have any friends to talk to and I was mostly alone. I started playing guitar around the same time and your videos helped me so much with chord progressions and techniques. Instead of feeling sad, I would play guitar. It's helped me so much in isolation. Now, I am obsessed with neosoul and mathrock and have formed a band. I have many friends who I've connected with through music. Thank you Tomo.

When I saw the title of this video, I knew it was for me. I came out of a bad drug addiction years ago, and I had played guitar for many many years but I did it with the assistance of drugs and amphetamines and stimulants. I would write awesome compositions and the next time it came around to play it, I would have difficulty doing it again unless I did more drugs. So I'm finally sober now, it's awesome, I love my life, I love being a morning person, But something that has stuck around from the years of abuse that I did to myself, is now I feel like I am having to relearn how to play and right from my heart, and it's difficult, and sometimes I feel my confidence level sinking and my inspiration sinking, Like I'm almost ashamed that I used to be such a good innovative guitar player, and I guess I abused my talent and now when I try to practice and family is in the house, that's when it hits me. It's not a completely sad story though, I am slowly coming out of this and getting better Tomo Fujita music videos have been an inspiration to me in this subject. I will leave you with this: -drugs really are bad, That's not just a cliche thing to say - You can get off them and life is so much more pure and better without them but it takes heart - Don't compare yourself to others, you are amazing how you are, don't do that with your guitar playing, it damage your CONfideNCE! - Don't mix hard drugs and guitar, it's not a good thing, there's a reason all of our favorite doped up guitar heroes died young!!! Peace my friends. I hope you find a peaceful moment and some tranquility amidst the inevitable struggle today. Have a great day, have an awesome day, make it count

Hey Zac, I'm Zack and I just wanna tell you I was in the same or similar boat as you. I started playing guitar in high-school and by the end of high-school I basically had recorded 2 albums/E.P.s and my future was looking bright. Well I decided to make bad decisions and honestly I feel like it was important that made such poor decisions or else I would have never learned. I ended up homeless a few times and had to crawl my way out of my own grave. In all my years of drug use I always thought that they enhanced my guitar playing, but it really didn't a lot of the time. If your thinking about your next hit while your playing a solo it might not be working the way you intended. But anyways I'm clean and sober (aside from 420 of course) and have been making my absolute favorite music of my life so far this past year and I'm so excited to release it and I did it completely without any hard drugs involved. It is certainly harder for some people to cope without substances but what helped me was coming to a realization that it was either drugs or me, one or the other but I couldn't choose both. Anyways I would start meditating, praying, and thinking to yourself and perhaps out loud to God, she will guide you and grant you the creativity you desire. Sometimes when I have very little inspiration it's because there's something wrong emotionally with me that I need to take care of. And ask yourself when do you truly love playing guitar the MOST? Like what is your favorite aspect about the guitar/music? We gotta focus on those aspects instead.

@@zacksguitarhacks6390 Stay off all drugs my man. These days even 420 gets laced with garbage and you are right back as an addict. You know what is really cool to get addicted to- as in I am a full on addict...nutrition and even some exercise. I can't get enough. It's no different really- it's just obsessing on one thing or another. I have better side effects though and far better labs! Try it- you might like it. Just change your obsession. Keep rocking!

Yes sir! This applies to so much beyond music, thank you for putting this out. I really believe that negative "self talk" is so dangerous. I am not good at guitar and can't do most things, but when I begin to lose confidence or become uninspired, I go back and relearn things I already 'know'. Sometimes, this helps me realize how far I've come, because I remember how hard something was to learn the first time and it also inspires me to take that thing and try new variations that I can build on.

I once read a little book from Phillip Toshio Suddo called Zen Guitar, it had nothing to do with technique, theory scales but a persons state of mind. Tomo, I strongly agree with you, I used to be very worried about not being able to play better and keep improving my musicality, but then after struggling for a while, I learned that my expection is too high, and I just waste so much time worrying rather than enjoying the music and the happiness of playing music. To live in the moment and slow down, concentrate on the present, is much more efficient to feel the music, to experience the emotion music generated and gradually building a firm and strong foundation is so important! Thanks for sharing and your positivity!

Patience and practice - the practice of cultivating patience - makes a better person, a better life, and better art. It’s not easy to talk about these things. We feel self-conscious, if we’re thoughtful, about being preachy or feel we don’t have a right to impose our ideas on other people, or maybe that we will not be taken seriously or heard at all. These simple ideas go such a long way, however, at answering what sometimes seem to be very difficult problems. They help us to make peace with ourselves, to have better relationships, and to be more thoughtful and creative in the things we do. We need to take patience and practice (and striving to do better, as the goal of practice by means of patience) as seriously as life, and as lightly as life. They are not burdens, I mean, but rather the tools by which we make ourselves and our lives better. Thanks for taking the time to talk about this. Too often, music talk is all about the details but loses the pathways into all that detail. They assume people have already found their way or that people don’t easily get lost. It’s important to talk about these bigger-picture things that give us some grounding in how to be a good person - a good music person just being an instance of a person who finds ways to succeed in life. Sometimes we get good at one thing but fail to apply the patience and practice that got us there to other parts of life, which is still a mistake, but a correctable one. These lessons are very general, and necessary.

First off, Tomo, I don't tune in to your channel first thing in the morning to be reminded that I'm human. I need a long, slowly creeping awareness of that fact to (hopefully) give me time to grab a bottle of something. But, aside from that, this was another great video and your minor blues/jazz licks are tasteful and done with a fair amount of "touch," which is essential. Keep up the good work. Oh, and one more thing. You forgot to remind everyone that being confident is often secondary to _looking_ confident. Simply act confident, even though you be dying inside; because reality follows from that. Act as if, and eventually it begins to _feel_ real. You're awesome. So there's your boost of confidence for the day. ;)

When you play something you could not play before it is a big confidence builder. Then go to the next thing and do that. Each thing you do builds on the last thing you did. Sort of like building a house. It also helps to surround yourself with supportive positive people.
