This album is having a somewhat renaissance the past few years. When it was released, I remember everyone calling it “ArtFlop” and everyone was “over” her theatrics. But NOW, it’s like this gem people are rediscovering and realizing it was actually kind of good and want her to do the theatrical stuff again. I think Rolling Stone or one of those even updated their score of it

And yes, EDM at the time this album was released was not as mainstream as it is today, which was why the album was crucified at the time, for presenting an unconventional sound for that time. And this album is also very important for the hyperpop scene because it experimented with many different sounds.

This is Gaga’s most decisive album to date, during her hate train, she was also addicted to cocain and had a lot of problems with her former manager who left her just before the launch of ARTPOP, Do What U Want is a response to the media they can do whatever they want with her body (they said she was fat etc) but they won’t have her mind, Mary Jane Holland is an alter ego of hers and the song is also about Gaga’s addiction to weed, Applause is actually the only single they pushed, they tried to push Do What U Want but the controversy surrounding the music video also R.Kelly allegations at the time stopped the promo of the song, Swine is about her getting R*ped by a music producer when she was younger.. this is her messiest era. After ARTPOP she completely changed the trajectory of her career and made a jazz record with Tony Bennett and adopted a softer image. Also great reaction 💯💯👏🏻

1:00:40 your smile here says it all. I am so glad that you loved ARTPOP! It was considered Gaga’s near career ending album and a “colossal” flop by so many at the time. It didn’t sell well, Applause was the only single that broke through and didn’t make it far. The backlash, hatred, and polarization of her fans and general music audience to it put Lady Gaga in a really dark place personally, mentally, and musically. She almost gave up on her career and walked away feeling that she had created this persona of Lady Gaga and sold it to the world and never got to be her true self. She did it for the Fame, became the Fame Monster, saw hope when she declared she was Born This Way, but was hated and ridiculed when she went experimental and was so ahead of her time with ARTPOP. If you are seeing this, I will say that Joanne, her next album, is after she took a long break and nearly quit. It is inspired by and a tribute to her aunt Joanne who she never met and who died young. It is a stripped down version of Gaga. A true showing of her roots. It is completely different sonically. I hope you are able to enjoy it still though but it definitely is nothing like these first 3/4 albums. Thank you for giving me this reaction! I needed it in my life more than you know and I cannot wait for Joanne. ❤ from America

A unreleased track from this era that I encourage you to look up is Partynauseous, which is another very in-your-face EDM. It was supposed to be a collaboration with kendrick Lamar for his album, but was scrapped due to "differences between their teams" (?). But it was used as an interlude during Artrave (artpop concert).

I will never understand how Artpop flopped when it came out, it's probably some of my favorite work by Gaga, and the visuals for the Venus/G.U.Y video are blissfully divine. 31:26 I'm here to connect things back to old shit. I'm glad you are taking your time to know each producer, because this song is about one of them. The artpop era was fun but it's one of the darkest moment in gaga's career because it was during this time when her PTSD from that sexual assault was peaking and haunting her. Excess sex, hard drugs, ostentation of expensive shit, hedonisms were all a coping mechanism for her. So when she had another artist throw up on her when performing to this song on stage, she was making us feel violated and repulsed by that trauma too but with pretty psychedelic colors. We'll return to this topic on planet Chromatica.

Oh man if you were there during the reveal of ARTPOP. It was definitely an era! Just some fun facts: - she performed at the iTunes Festival before releasing ARTPOP, called Swinefest by the Gaga community - Gaga performed just songs from ARTPOP at the Swinefest - The versions performed at Swinefest were different that the final releases (my favorite performance was fine at iTunes Fest, with the title track) - Aura was going to be the lead single, and the continuation of Telephone (Paparazzi, Telephone, Aura) - Gaga let fans decide the second single. It was between MANiCURE, Sexxx Dreams, Aura, and Swine. None of them were a single. - Gaga announced Venus was to be ARTPOP’s second single. It became just a promo single. - DWUW’s music video was recorded, but never released. - DWUW was re-recorded with Cristina Aguilera - G.U.Y. was released as an official single. - DWUW was removed from ARTPOP all together.

For artpop she recorded a collab with azalea banks (red flame) wich leaked but gaga cut her off from her album because „she has a bad attitude“ Also she recorded 2 songs with kendrick lamar, wich both leaked as well. She was on the original version of „bitch dont kill my vibe“ wich was released without her on his album. Both songs were cancelled by his team because gaga was „too gay“ and they thought it wouldnt be a good look on him…. It was never my favorite Gaga album however I remember being so disappointed and sort of let down that the album didn't have much promotion thereafter. I originally disliked Applause but caught on to Do What U Want. Loved a handful of tracks from the album. Used to get stoned and blast it with a friend on our adventures/shenanigans. 😂 The festival performance is PEEAAK Gaga though! Still cherish it today and still reguard it as sort of a hidden gem for her. Seriously some of her very best performance-wise. When I first saw her sing the title track, I was overjoyed and had chills. Seeing her.. NUUDE up there. 🌸 🌈 ✨️ 💓💞

@tamerail I’m sure someone said it already but “Mary Jane Holland” not only is yes a reference to weed/marijuana but also Mary Jane Holland was a fake name she would use when partying as her alter ego and she would throw on a brown wig. Hard to explain but basically she would get high and drunk and have fun with friends apparently in Amsterdam and she was pretending to be a different person to be silly and Mary Jane Holland was the name she came up with.

@@davisi I don’t know how young you are or how old you were at the time, but you’re just wrong. Anyone in their mid to late teens to early 20s who’s into music already knew Zedd at the time. A year before this album, he released his album Clarity and the title track was a huge hit, played on every mainstream radio station constantly at the time. You literally don’t know what you’re talking about lol you think old people were or do listen to this album? Anyone who listened to pop music and this album at the time knew who Zedd was. And this is coming from someone who knows Gaga’s entire discography and has followed her since she performed Just Dance on tv for the first time in 2008. So sit down lol

@@Pixelpunch3 I mean she did have zedd make remixes on born this way back in 2011…which is before clarity

@@joshuwajimer 🙄 she had everyone and their mother remix that song. There are a million official remixes of most of her singles. And you don’t even know if she decided that or if he went to the record label or the record label went to him you have no idea lol. Lady Gaga did not discover Zedd in anyway. End of story. lol
