Synopsis

This movie makes me cry because Forrest faces life and Jenny runs from it, but people hate on her SO MUCH as if her life isn't full of trauma and violence since she was a kid. A life full of trauma can make you forget you deserve love.

I love this comment so much. So important. I had no idea some viewers hated Jenny till a good friend of mine told me yesterday. I was shocked! Her reasons for running away from life are very legit and understandable. Like you said its trauma-based. Makes you feel like you don't deserve good things and to be loved. The scene where she almost unalive herself was so heartbreaking.

Jenny was "taught" thinking love was what her father did to her - so any feelings of real love was something she didn't understand. All the men she was with were abusive because that's what she knew as love. The only thing she really felt was that running made her safe - hence whenever she tells Forrest to run, it's her purest form of love. She always runs away from Forest because she loves him. It's not till she has a Son and understands real love that she stays.

Yeah. It's the confirmation that he completely understands the challenges he's faced in his life, in his own way. He faces everything so head-on it almost seems like he's ignorant of how others think of him and treat him, but that moment shows that he knows. And he doesn't want his son to go through it.

Oh my God yes. And I love that they didn’t have to spoonfeed us the fact that he was worried his kids weren’t going to be smart. through that scene and also the seen when forest at Jenny‘s grave - when he said “he’s so smart” and started crying. It perfectly conveys how anxious he was about that. And how relieved he is that his kid is very smart. Beautiful storytelling.

Gary Sinise, the actor that played Lt. Dan, was so affected by this role he became deeply involved in Veteran organizations. He started his own foundation for vets, The Gary Sinise Foundation. He also tours with the USO to active duty shows around the world with his band, The Lt. Dan Band.

And those birds were a complete coincidence as well! They were just filming some footage of Tom walking away from the gravesite and the birds just happened, everyone was kinda awestruck and nobody messed up the take/footage so they put that into the final film since it was so perfect. At least that’s what I heard from “behind the scenes” shows that were on back in the day.

Nixon resigned because of the Watergate scandal. Which, in the scene here, it was from Forest calling the security/front desk that the flashlights were keeping him up. Something I never noticed until now (probably seen the movie 20 times) is that Lt. Dan tells him that the day Forest becomes a shrimp boat captain is the day he becomes an astronaut, and then Lt. Dan ends up having prosthetic leg made from the same material Nasa uses. Not sure if that was intentional but thought it was kinda cool.

Forrest getting hit in the butt doesn't seem too serious. He could keep running for quite some time afterwards, meaning his pelvis isn't broken, and at the hospital he's back on his feet playing ping-pong. I wonder if it's implied that the doctors gave him a pass because they did't think he would survive if they sent him back out. A high velocity bullet to the ass would probably have gone straight through him, shattered his pelvis and hip joint, and ripped up a huge exit wound. If it was a bullet ricochet or a small piece of shrapnel seems more likely.

I had a girlfriend also named Jenny and I loved very much and I asked her to marry me she said no and moved out a few days later. She had a rough childhood, her brother who was two years older than her and was her shoulder to lean on died tragically at twenty. Her dad was not a very good guy. I talked to her mother after she left and her mom said that Jenny won't let anyone really love her and pushes them away in fear of them leaving. It took me awhile to come to terms with that.

Fun fact: the Alabama accent of the young actor playing young Forrest, is real. So real, that Tom Hanks decided to study that boys accent for a long time to get his older Forrest's accent to match the boy. I think I've seen this movie (and Sahwshank Redemption) over 100 times, and it never gets old. Beautiful story..glad you enjoyed it.

This movie hits different now, having gone through a similar situation as Lt Dan in becoming disabled. The grief and anger is REAL, but so is the peace and acceptance he achieves toward the end of the story. Very relatable for people like us. Just a little detail I wanted to point out I never see mentioned. At Forest's wedding Lt Dan shows up with his fiancé, who is clearly of Asian descent, further showing his growth as a person through his interactions with Forest given that they met in Vietnam during wartime which typically fostered a lot of hatred and racism from many returning vets. It's like his wholesomeness is contagious.

I think people also overlook the fact thay Jenny goes to Forest when she's truly scared, but when she got clean and came back she saw her childhood home and reminded her that she didn't deserve love, and least of all Forest. So even though she changed for the better, she couldn't make herself stay because she thinks she's bad for Forest. It wasn’t until she had her child and experienced unconditional love that she realized that wasn't true. Jenny probably would have gotten in touch with him sooner if he hadn't been away for so long.and people talk so much crap about Jenny, but she knew he was loaded and if she really didnt care about him she would have took his money and run off.

It means so much to me to hear that you immediately grasped how forward Jenny was and the concept of consent. Because I read a theory that that particular scene was Jenny's turning point. Where she realized, maybe not intellectually but subconsciously, that what she'd done was mirroring her own abuse, and what pushed her over the edge into the downward spiral that she fought so hard to climb out of. I know that the time we get to see her with her stuff together is short, but I'm grateful we all still got to see that, because so many folks who've experienced a hard life don't get to have those kinds of experiences. Thanks for sharing that. I really love that theory about Jenny and I can definitely get behind that. There was definitely a realization that happened there. I heard someone in the comments say they would love a movie from Jenny's point of view and I absolutely would love to watch that. Obviously it would be a sadder movie but such an important one. This movie gets me every time. It holds so much meaning to me. One of my dear friends and I saw this together in the theater. We also were like peas and carrots. Sadly, she died in a tragic accident not long after. She was only 29. In my mind I can still see her beautiful smile and hear her laughter almost thirty years later.

I will never understand how so many people can completely miss the fact that Jenny was really messed up because of her father, and that caused a chain reaction for the rest of her life until she finally had little Forrest. Trauma only in childhood is enough to affect someone for life, but the fact that it led her into having trauma after trauma after trauma... Jenny's story isn't that difficult of a story to understand, yet it seems to bounce right off the skulls of most of the reactors on YT.

I always love the story Tom Hanks said about the voice. The director told Tom to decide on an accent so they could teach the young actor how he was going to sound. Hanks said, "Wouldn't it be easier if I just learned to talk like him?" He said he still has a bunch of recordings he would listen to of him talking with the child actor (who eventually served as a Marine, I believe).

Following you because you understood Jenny, and as a woman I applaud you for that. A lot of men have no empathy for sexual abuse because they can’t grasp the emotional/mental damage it inflicts on people. They also take it personally that Jenny can’t imagine deserving a white picket fence life with Forrest. As someone who has been abused myself, and struggle with depression & PTSD, Jenny’s story resonates with me- I ran for a long time too and was blinded from seeing any of the good in people or life and just wanted to numb myself. Some call it selfish- while I call sexual abuse selfish and don’t victim blame. Something funny/wholesome I thought of when you mentioned what a good actor Tom Hanks is. I remember WAY back a year or so after this movie came out... His wife, Rita Wilson (a very good actress!) was on a talk show promoting one of her projects. The subject of Tom came up, and she commented on how much she liked it when Tom was filming Forrest Gump. Like a lot of actors, he "gets into" his characters while he's performing. At the time of Rita's interview, Tom was filming Apollo 13, playing one of the astronauts (an intense movie about a military man in an intense situation), so he was "intense and edgy" at home. She contrasted this with the year before when he had been filming Forrest Gump and he had been in a constant, agreeable, wholesome mindset, super helpful around the house, would pretty much do anything she asked without any argument (100% "Forrest-style"), she was laughing about how much she missed that, it was a pretty cute story.

In Canada years ago we had a guy named Terry Fox who ran across Canada with one good leg and the other was a prospectic leg from getting cancer, so he ran 🏃‍♂️ across Canada 🇨🇦 for cancer research and they made statues everywhere of him and a track and field called Terry Fox and children in school do a run on their tracks doing the Terry Fox run every year.

The day after John Lennon got shot, I was 9 years old & with my mom at a grocery food store in Southern California. There was a lady noticeably crying in the newspaper/magazine area. My mom went over to her to ask if she was okay and she held up something for my mom to read. It must have been a newspaper, because she said that John Lennon got killed. Their conversation was pretty short, so I think my mom knew already from the television. I had only heard The Beatles records my mom played, but I remember thinking people must have really liked him if a stranger like that was crying for him in public. I'll (hopefully) never forget that 30-35 seconds. The confusing, shocking gravitas of it.

The scene with the hotel where the president resigned right after Forrest complained about the flashlights was a reference to the Watergate Scandal, in which Nixon had been caught having people illegally dig up information on his political opponents. The implication is that Forrest inadvertently uncovered corruption he was never aware of.

22:25 this hit home for me in it's own way, remembering the father of my very first serious boyfriend. His dad was in Vietnam and they didn't have him till 1989, even with being together for so long. That is what it is, but I met his father a handful of times. I felt for him so much because the trauma of what he went through was very evidently exhausting. Eventually I asked if he suffered from PTSD and my bf said "yes". He then proceeded to tell me what really triggered it for him. His dad was one of the front men and sometimes the first person leading the company into the red zone. One morning, his friend and buddy on the front volunteered to be the main front man. Within moments of their entrance into the zone, he watched his friend completely disappear from in front of him. He was completely hit and disintegrated in front his eyes, within seconds. That could have been him. Not to mention they had to keep pushing foward over the line. Even at 33, that still sticks in my head and reverberates when I watch the jungle scenes from the time Forrest spent in Vietnam.

In my early 30s, it makes me think that while Forest was cursed with some developmental disability, he wasn't cursed, like most people, with the complicated mental struggle. Hello.I through I would a little about my story. I was born with cerebral palsy, and had leg braces on my legs to help me walk better once I got them off. I was picked on and made fun of alot ; sometimes kid would push me or trip me to make me fall. I lived in a small town and bussing was beginning, black kids were being bused to my school. There were 4 white kids who rode the bus, and pick on me everyday, until two big black started riding the bus, They seen what with happening, and that day in the school yard, They kicked all four of their butts. After that, They would tell me to set next to They on the school bus; They protected from grade school to high school, funny They Never asked once why I had to wear leg braces. They liked me for me ,and I liked They, my favorite thing to do is watch Them play football, man kind They hurt other players; after high school They both received scholarships to University of Miami, I think about Them alot, They gave me respect, a gift that is amazing when you facing struggles in your life. Seriously, when I saw this movie when it was first released, I told everyone who hadn't seen it yet that it was an instant classic, and was going to win BIG at the Academy Awards. They all thought I was just exaggerating...until they saw it, too! This is a truly great movie that will be loved for many decades...centuries, even. There's a LOT of historical references in this movie pertaining to a very significant era in America. Forrest's football coach is the legendary "Bear" Bryant. JFK was assassinated in Dallas, TX in 1963, and his younger brother Bobby, assassinated in Los Angeles, CA in 1968. The scene where Forrest calls in a maintenance report refers to the Watergate affair, a MAJOR American political scandal, leading to the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974. One of Nixon's most significant acts as president was to open the diplomatic door with China, and Ping-Pong was an odd method of "breaking the ice". And, as it was back in the day, the soundtrack of this movie is also significant, and correct for the time frame of the scene. It's nice to imagine a person like Forrest possible...a guy with little probability of ever being self-reliant, let alone a success, yet he manages to be at the right place, at the right time, and is able to use what few talents he has to full advantage, and game the system, and win, while managing to keep his innocence, and wonder at the world.

Hey cavecookie1! Forrest Gump is such a special movie to me for many reasons, but I think it is VERY impressive how it balances many different genres of film! I feel like I am watching a Coming-Of-Age movie, a Comedy movie, a Drama movie, a Romance movie, and a War movie, all at 1 time! For me Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled). I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my KZbin channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. 1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲 2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis. 3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks. 4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that. 5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around. 6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date. 5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😋 8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony.. 9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his. 10. At the rally Forrest says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." 11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking. 13. "Sometimes I guess there're just aren't enough rocks" 14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis. 15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that" 16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey. If you haven't already, you must do Tom Hanks in the GOAT "The Green Mile". Stephen King adaptation. You WILL cry.😭

When they were working on the accent of the film the kid playing young Forrest was having trouble, so Hanks modified his accent to match the kids normal way of speaking.

Oh man am i happy this video was among my recommended videos. Seeing you react to and comment on the movie was truly amazing as i myself cry every time i watch it. Such a powerful and beautiful movie and message. That feather falling out of the book is the same one seen in the very first scene of the movie and just seeing that one detail always brings a tear to my eye.
