Desi’s accent was one of the gems of “I Love Lucy”. If Desi really learned how to drop his accent …. and just delivered lines …a lot of the charm would’ve disappeared. He really was funny!

Sorry I have not commented lately. For some reason have not been seeng your stuff in my feed lately. Saw this luckily. Gonna have to make sure I look at your channel to catch what I missed. This show is my absolute all time favorite. Those 4 were perfectly matched

Desi was brilliant. He could switch from English to Spanish in an instant and also knew the scripts of all the actors. He must have had to write his own Spanish lines, too, since the writers only would put "Ricky: Something clean in Spanish" in the script. The only flub we can name is the famous one from "Cuban Pals", which ended up being so endearing. Desi's talent is often overlooked.

In addition to being his wife, when Lucy made fun of his accent, the jabs incorporated her spectacular timing and inflection.

Thank you, Rick. If you watch closely you can see Desi very deliberately step on the lace costume. I loved this episode. It's demonstrative of human foibles and insecurities. I think it's innocently amusing when Lucy is jealous and pokes fun of Ricky's accent. It baffles me how these episodes translate into Spanish, however. Love your channel, Rick, muchisimas gracias. I ❤ Lucy and you.

Fun bit of trivia about learning English, Rick. I read in a biography about Carmen Miranda that she was promised bonuses for the amount of English words she learned and eventually exceeded expectations!

Happy Thanksgiving Rick to you and your bride! Yes I recall when Lucy makes fun of his English. It’s usually when they are fighting. I can remember an episode when Ricky says “ And don’t make fun of my English and she scoffs and says Ha! That’s English? with a haughty demeanor. But the exact episode escapes me at the moment. Fun video! 😊

I've watched movies Desi made before I Love Lucy. I think he has less of an accent in those films. But, it doesn't matter. I adore Desi. I might even LOVE Desi.

“I know those who haven’t subscribed. I’ve seen you.” Is that Ricknineg as Rod Serling at the end of the video or Big Brother? lol. I am latino and my dad when he 1st worked in nyc he was struggling to perfect his english some even made fun of him which made him mad. I never found it offensive it was part of the charm and also the spouse interaction is what made the show work. Also couples always fight so it is expected to poke fun at each other. My parents loved the show as well. Some of the situations that came up were hysterical

On the old "Sonny & Cher" show, they would say funny little insulting things to each other. Everybody laughed. At the end of the day, no matter what they said, you knew they still loved each other. Then they got a divorce. They tried to do the show anyway, but that stuff they said just wasn't funny anymore. This observation is not original to me, but I can't remember who I heard say it. I think it was from before KZbin.

@@SailorBarsoom I used to watch the Sonny & Cher Show on CBS when I was in high school. I could sense the tension between them when they insulted each other during the opening dialogue. Sonny split and in the later years it was just the ‘Cher Show.’

When the gang is embarking on the S.S. Constitution and Lucy has to embark by helicopter, Ricky exclaims, "A hay-ya-copter! Isn't that dangerous?" Fred says, "Yeah, for the hay-ya-copter." Always thought that was funny and a rare mocking by Fred. Almost seems adlibbed. Although a funnier one from an earlier episode where Ricky is trying to pronounce "cuddle" but it sounds like "curdle" and Fred says, "Curdle?" Ricky, "Yeah!" Fred , "Oh, like that song 'Curdle Up A Little Closer'". LOL!

Spanish is my fourth language, and I speak it at work. I learned Castillian Spanish with good enunciation. Most people I speak with are from Mexico or Latin America with muddier accents. I've adapted mine to be better understood. So I can imagine how Ricky felt speaking English slower and enunciating better

Great piece, as usual Rick. I'd like to submit an additional piece of information for the files. I think Desi kind-of mellowed out a bit as time when on concerninging his accent. There is a little routine between him and Argentinian actor Fernando Lamas in the episode "Lucy Goes to Sun Valley" in the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. "Ricky Ricardo: I understand you met my wife, Lucy. Fernando Lamas: [remembering his skiing accident with her the day before] Eh, yes. Ricky Ricardo: Uh, you see, we had a fight, y'know, so, and she came out here alone, y'know, and then she saw you and she got an idea, and she, she got somebody telling me that you were seeing a lot of each other, so that I would come up here because I was yealous. Fernando Lamas: Uh, yealous? Ricky Ricardo: Sí. Celoso. Fernando Lamas: Oh, yealous! Real funny. And shows that both men were good sports about such things.

Yes it must have been difficult playing that role with so much talent. At least they gave him the night club.
@hanschristianbrando55882 ай бұрын
I bet it nearly drove him to what he called a physiochiatrist. For the most part, they made sure that only Lucy made fun of his accent; audiences liked it less when Ethel or Fred did it. Similarly, Vivian Vance didn't like the Ethel fat jokes, debunking the long-running myth that she was contractually obligated to be overweight for the show, astutely saying that if Ethel really is fat and they make fun of her, the audience won't laugh, they'll feel sorry for her and hate the others for being mean to her.

It's a bit unusual that for Ricky, "explain" became "'splain", since when I studied Spanish in school, I learned that a Spanish word never started with 'S' followed by a consonant. There would usually be 'e' with 's', so an English word like "school" becomes "escuela" in Spanish. I'm sure they both came from the same Latin root, but Spanish adds that extra syllable in this case.

I thought it was very cute when Lucy would make fun of Ricky's English. It wasn't like it was all the time. So, it didn't come across as mean. Happy Thanksgiving 😊 Rick. 👍

Something about english as a second language. I know some young people in Nigeria who speak better english than I. They just have an accent. The accent is secondary and should not be difficult to learn. Don't criticize people who have learned english well, especially if you only speak one language. 🤔 Thanks Rick. Happy Thanksgiving.
