Molly Brown, played by Kathy Bates was an actual person. The reason all the other women disliked her is because she had a working class background and made her way up to becoming wealthy. That’s also the reason she empathizes with Jack who’s lower class.

@@ac1646 Reba McEntire was originally supposed to take the role on, and I think had a closer resemblance - but she had to back out to fulfill other obligations. Kathy Bates, though, gives an absolutely incredible performance brimming with warmth. I can’t picture it any other way.

The significance of the note gets me every time. "Make it count. Meet me at the clock" wasnt just about that night, it was about her entire life. She made it count, and she met him at the clock 😭❤️😭

Well said and pointed out. Jack's character felt that was the make it or break it moment. Concerning whether or not he was going to fully commit to Rose. Had Rose not been there at the clock, Jack would have been disappointed, but he would have let it go eventually. Which is of course why the very next day, after the conclusion of the 3rd class party and seeing Rose had a blast, he went out of his way to try and talk to her about their feelings etc. The fact that Rose came to the clock was not just a moment of fu, but a life-changing decision that Jack's character knew from the beginning. It was beautiful how it all worked out.

If I remember correctly, only two of the seven Titanic surivors saw the film. One of them, Eleanor Johnson Shuman, was given a special screening by James Cameron. The most vocal about her refusal to watch the film was Milvina Dean. She was reportedly horrified when the wreck was discovered in 1985 and was against people sending submarines to explore it, since it'd become a graveyard to thousands of people, one of them being her father

The guy with the booze (dressed in white) near jack and rose, (when the ship was vertical) was the baker, he helped people by throwing bread into the life boats, he also threw away the furniture into the water, so people could hold on to it. At the end he got drunk, rode the titanic down, and was saved from the water. Luckily enough he had only a hurt leg. Lucky drunk bastard

When this movie came out, it was more of an “event” than any other film I’ve been alive for. Everyone saw it at least once. The song was all over the radio. Tons of Titanic TV specials, books, magazines, and articles popped up. It came up at some point at every get together. It was simply everywhere. And it was a great film. At the time, highest grossing movie ever and most Oscar wins ever. What more can you say? Also, on a personal note, it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater with a co-ed group of friends, unchaperoned. Which was a huge deal, especially during the “adult” scenes lol. Was also probably the first true love story I ever saw. Some people like to rip on it bc it was so popular, but it really was a great movie and a cultural phenomenon. Wow, I just waxed poetic about that much more than I intended to 😂

Those are great memories, for sure! I was pregnant with my first child that winter, and I went and saw it 5X's in the theatre. I fell in love with the love story, and was extremely tender.. because I was hormonal and pregnant lol. xo

Every now and then there comes a pop phenomenon that is as good as it is successful. They're rare, but they do happen - the career of the Beatles or the art of Picasso also comes to mind. Titanic is one of those kinds of generation defining pop landmarks - one of those indispensable touchstones of the 90s.

You keep referring to CGI. Most of this is actual set. They built a titanic almost full scale. It was a little bit smaller for cost purposes. But it’s pretty damn close. In some scenes, it was a model. But most of what you’re saying, is a set. This is back when they actually did things, and didn’t rely on CGI.

CGI is fine. Making good CGI is actually just as much a craft as doing set models. The problem is just that these days most big production make lazy CGI that looks empty, generic and bland.

Yeah, it bothered me a lot. Especially at serious scenes, like Rose wanting to die, seeing people fall and die, and even watching the mom with the baby in the water. Didn't seem to take anything seriously. Was he uncomfortable and didn't know how else to react? I was going to watch his friends-reaction, but after this I changed my mind. I like people showing their emotions (but not laughing at serious/sad scenes), so this is not my type of reactor.

James Horner did a fantastic job for the soundtrack. It's weird to imagine the movie without his music. Concerning that prior to Titanic that he and Cameron had a fallout since Alien 2 and hadn't been in contact anymore. Nonetheless, they reconciled in part of Cameron's effort and the rest is history.

Also, fun fact, since you mentioned your Pomeranian. The only dog to survive the Titanic was a Pomeranian that was brought by a passenger in to a lifeboat. The dogs were normally kept in a kennel on the boat deck. And it was reported that they were seen running around on the deck before the ship sank. Meaning, thankfully, someone went and freed them. Even though they would drown, at least they didn’t drown locked in cages. There was actually a deleted scene for the film of the dogs running around on deck.

I saw you asked about why the watertight doors didn't work, so here goes: they did work, but the ship could only survive four of the watertight compartments being flooded. If only four had been breached, she'd have limped along, but she wouldn't have sunk, the water would have stayed contained in those compartments. The way the iceberg scraped along the ship, however, punctured the hull across five of the compartments, meaning five compartments were flooded. The weight of five flooded compartments made the ship tilt downwards, which meant the water was able to spill over the top of the watertight bulkheads (they only went up to E Deck) and flood the rest of the ship. It's devastating that if they'd managed to turn around the iceberg (you saw them yelling 'hard to port!' as the iceberg was hitting, which was them trying to turn the ship the opposite way to where they'd been turning to try and avoid it, to try and kick out the back so it wouldn't scrape along the entire side), and it had punctured just a few feet less of the hull, the ship wouldn't have foundered. That's part of the tragedy of Titanic: it was a perfect storm of terrible luck and everything going wrong, and so many heartbreaking instances where it could have gone right. Edited to add: it was assumed for years that the damage done by the iceberg must have been huge, like a large rip along the side across severel hundred feet, but examination of the wreck after she was found in in the 80s showed that actually the damage was minimal. No big rip along the side, just lots of little punctures and holes that you would never imagine could sink such a large ship. But because the small rips and damage were dotted across five compartments, they flooded, and she sank. The story of the Titanic continues to be fascinating and distressing in equal measure because of things like this. If you wrote the story of the sinking as a fiction project, people would call it out and criticise it for being too fantastical and unbelievable.

Also, they have tested with models what would happen if the watertight doors were open. In each test the model capsized. Had this happened to the Titanic there would have been more loss of life as it would have made launching lifeboats much more difficult, and likely impossible once the list hit 20°. This happened to the Andrea Doria and they were unable to launch half of her lifeboats for that reason.

Titanic is the greatest disaster movie. It is also one of the greatest Hollywood romances and one of the greatest Hollywood epics. Titanic belongs alongside Casablanca and Gone With The Wind. I went to see this masterpiece 15 times while it was in theaters back in 1997.

40:17 The guy who is shouting for everyone to get out is a portrayal of one of the boiler crew, Frederick Barrett. Barrett actually managed to survive the sinking and he can be been seen later smoking a cigarette near Rose on the rescue ship. In real life, Barrett's testimony stated he was knocked over by the water rushing through when the iceburg hit. So the first guy to be touched by the water entering the ship actually lived. Very lucky man.

The baker (as portrayed hanging on the stern with Jack and Rose) was supposed to have been assigned a lifeboat, but he was never given the order and three other men were given his place instead. He drank heavily, threw any buoyant furniture he could find overboard, and climbed onto the stern, where he waited for the rest of the ship to sink. The difference is he was never sucked down and was actually in the water until daybreak.

They would get both ships worth down then go back and forth. Well, it is safe to say that Titanic is the greatest, simple love story ever made. You know, the love story wasn't so overly complex, like Casablanca or Gone With The Wind etc. Titanic was a lovestory that was easy to follow. That even includes with the legit criticism of the pace of the love story in mind, which to be fair was kinda quick. But what matters is that the lovestory of Titanic was logical and thus convincing in the end, because of Cameron's excellent writing/script skills, in addition to the wonderful acting and chemistry of DiCaprio and Winslet that made all the on-screen magic happen and unfold.

Just to give a scale of how massive this movie was when it came out: it was in US theaters from December 1997 until October 1, 1998-but was released on DVD and VHS on September 1, 1998. So for one whole month it was in theaters AND home media. That was simply unheard of back then, as far as I remember. Also, its highest grossing day was Valentine's Day 1998, two full months after it came out. Every week, for a while, the news reported that Titanic had just broken yet another record. You just had to be there!

This became a popular story but it isn’t true. If you listen to the cast and crew commentary, the producers say the day they were filming this scene, they had enough breakable plates for the table for a few shots but they kept needing more. They had to call a crew to make more AS they were shooting so they wouldn’t need to stop filming. These movies are so big and expensive that most major moments are meticulously calculated and budgeted :)

My grandma kept her old TV until she died, no surprise to me :-)I was 12 when the movie came out... We sneaked in the cinema in Italy (because the cinema nearby was in the German part of Switzerland but we are from the Italian part). The movie was from 16 an above, but there was such a crowd! They did not check our age, not even counted or money properly (we had only little coins). The atmosphere were incredible! I remember the popcorn smell and the person who answered his phone and screamed: "Non posso parlare ora, son al cinemaaaaaa! Sì sì, Titanic... Ok, richiamo dopo.... Non posso, son al cinemaaaa!" ("Can't talk right now, I am at the cinemaaaaahhh! Yes, yes, Titanic... Ok, I'll call you back... I can't I am at the cinemaaahh!" ahahah, but then I remember all the people crying from heart seeing all the deaths in the water.

True, I'm Italian as well and I was 15 and with my friends we planned to say that we were 16 to the box, but it was so crowded than we just all stormed inside screaming with all the other people. They barely managed to give us our tickets, there were actually guys at the entrance trying to slim the crowd, so we didn't even see the box office xD At that time you sit whenever you find a sit, and we managed to run and have a good central view. That could be, but Cameron never confirmed. He left the ending open for creative reasons. Arguing it was up for the viewer to decide and leave them with the creative and artistic freedom to conclude what Rose was going through and the message of the movie etc.

They only put 20 lifeboats on the ship because they didn't want to get rid of deck room. Each lifeboat could fit 65 people on it, so even if they did put 65 people on each life boat, like they were supposed to, only 1300 people out the 2200 people would have made it out alive. Thomas Andrews said that he wanted to make more space for lifeboats and nobody listened to him. They would have needed at least another 14 lifeboats to save everyone on that ship. I could be totally wrong in this by the way.

Partially true. Lifeboat regulations at the time were outdated and titanic and her sister ship Olympic were the first true super liners and didn't account for the significant size these ships were. It was also believed that during this time there were hundreds of ships crossing back and forth between America and Europe, and that if a ship was in distress a ship would come to the rescue to pick up the passengers on the distressed ship. The lifeboats were more meant to ferry passengers between the foundering ship and the rescue ship.

In fact, another little tidbit from the making of the film... one expert on the Titanic-I can't remember which-actually appeared as the father of the kid who threw the top on the deck as Jack was looking for Rose. That was a replica of an actual picture taken in Queenstown before heading out to sea.

Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the Titanic died on May 31, 2009 at the age of 97 at a nursing home near Southampton, England. Coincidently, the day of her passing was the 98th anniversary of the launch of the Titanic's hull on May 31, 1911.

Darn me , the orchestra joining back sequence for the last song in a pivotal momment of the sinking big sequence. And they play " Nearer my God to Thee" , in the ecclesiastical version ...always gets me. The scenes are powerful ... Tom is dead , Fabrizio undresses him, to take his lifejacket which is in blood and has a bullet inside, Isidor Strauss and his wife, snuggling at their bed in thdir cambin and water flows under them, the mother from the lower third class make her childer sleep by telling them a fairytale about Tir Na Nog, the land of eternal youth. Damn the most crying combilation of scenes. And the woman with the child ofcourse in her hug who question captain Smith " Capitain Capitain, whersre I go ?" in damn good gaelic accent... now Irish is the mostly real language in Titanic. Maybe was from the Undergoole Irish people? Who knows. James Horner's score for the movie is incredible.

Almost everything you see here VFX-wise was done practically. There were no CGI ships used. When you see shots of the ship leaving port or sailing on the open ocean, those were mostly completed using a massive 1/20 scale model that was roughly 45 feet (13.75 meters) in length. Shots of the ship breaking were done using a much larger 1/8 scale model. When you see the ship in port or during most of the sinking scenes, these were filmed on an (almost) full scale replica of the ship that was over 700 feet in length. They only built the right side, so some scenes required the actors to have their makeup/costumes/hairstyle reversed so when they flip the image in post production, it looks the right way around. This 700 foot long set could also be tilted and lowered into a massive water tank. Same goes for the interior sets. This production is an incredible example of what can be accomplished with practical set-building and model design. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Edit: the engines also weren’t CGI, they were recorded on a real WW2-era ship, the USS Jeremiah O’Brien. They were then combined digitally with actors walking on full scale catwalks in front of a green screen.

In a way this film was a little bit of a sort of vengeance for James Cameron, because he had made his first water-based film The Abyss, before this one (by the way one of the best ones I've ever seen, especially if you watch the full unedited version), he had ignored the normal parameters given to scriptwriting in the industry by making the margins smaller so he could fit more into the script, because they at the studio wouldn't let him do his director's cut of it and made him headed out like 45 minutes of the film, including the whole point at the end, because the studios said there's no way people would sit through a movie that long, and he was like, look, you know all these old epic films like Ben-Hur had intermissions and were quite long and people were happy about it, but studio basically said no one's attention span was that long anymore, so when he came back and made this film and people not only sat through the whole thing including the intermission but literally came to see it multiple times, it was like his point was made.

I was 15 when I saw this in the theater with my friends. We were crying our eyes out. Our young minds can't keep up with all the horror. I was traumatized by the man faliing and hitting the propellers. Having not learned my lesson, I saw Saving Private Ryan I think the following year. I was even more traumatised.

Fun Facts: - Titanic had more than the minimum required (16) of lifeboats for a ship of her size (20). - Titanic sank in 2hrs 40min - There where three dogs that survived (Two Pomeranians and one English bull dog). - It was reported that a 1st class passenger refused to leave her Great Dane behind and was found after the sinking clutching on to her dog. - It was suspected by Thomas Andrews (Ship designer) Titanic had only 1hr-1hr 30minutes before she sank - There was a coal fire on board that actually helped increase the time Titanic stayed afloat. To put out a coal fire you have to move coal from the bunker with the fire to other coal bunkers on the ship. This movement of tons of coal from the Starboard (Right) side of the ship to the Port (Left) counteracted the flooding on the Starboard side and actually caused a more even keel sinking. Hence why the Titanic (Like 99% of ships did NOT roll over during sinking. - Titanic was only claimed to be unsinkable by Newspapers and reporters. Never did the White Star Line ever say she was unsinkable. - While there was gates on Titanic to block areas between first, second, and third class passengers most of the gates were open during the sinking. The problem was most 3rd class passengers didn't know how to get up to the boat decks or only knew of a couple places they could go. Not only that but a lot of non English speaking passengers had a lot of trouble finding there way out of the ship as well. - The boats that weren't full are because a lot of the passengers on Titanic were unaware of how bad the situation actually was and it looked far better to be on a large ship with heat and lights than a small and cramped lifeboat. - 1st officer Murdoch (Starboard (Right) Side) allowed men to board the lifeboats if there was no Woman of Children around. However, 2nd officer Lightoller (Port (Left) Side) would not allow men on regardless of the circumstances and even had men forcibly removed from lifeboats as well. - Yes, the band members played till near the very end. Sadly White Star Line billed their families for their suits they had rented for use while onboard. - James Cameron actually was the one drawing the image of Kate during that scene. One thing to note is a lot of people say that Titanic should of had more lifeboats (It wouldn't of helped and in fact probably would of made things worse). Titanic had enough room for 48 lifeboats however this would of caused a lot of clutter on the deck which would of made maneuvering and preparing lifeboats more lengthy. Titanic is one of if not the longest time for a ship to sink in history at almost 3 hours. During this time the crew didn't even have enough time to launch all 20 lifeboats with the last two floating off as Titanic went under. We see this time and time again with most ships sinking in under one hour. Most of them roll over which usually prevent you from launching lifeboats on one side or at the very least minimizes the amount that can be launched. What I am saying is more lifeboats would not of helped Titanic and her passengers the results would of been the same even if Titanic had more lifeboats.

Also lifeboats were mainly used to ferry passengers to a rescue ship during distress. At this time there were hundreds of ships crossing both ways from America to Europe and most were in close enough distance to come to the aid of a ship in distress. Titanic's unfortunate circumstance was that because of the moonless night and a large ice field ahead, most ships shut down for the night and planned to wait until morning to continue where they'd have daylight to help navigate the ice field. There was a ship that could have made it on time the Californian, but the Titanic's radio operators were irritated by the radio operators on the Californian and basically told them to shut up, so the Californian crew shut off their radio and were unable to reach Titanic's distress calls. Carpathia was the next closest ship but would take nearly 4 hours to reach them which was too late. The Titanic's sister ship Olympic also received distress calls but was too far away to do anything and they also shut down to wait out the night before continuing in the morning.

I think this movie does a great job at showing the horror these people must have felt and the stress. Like even when I rewatch it, I'm always getting nervous, hoping the titanic wont hit the iceberg this time 😅 Also the time of the movie is the time how long it took the titanic to sink.

As a kid I was fascinated with disasters like this. As a teen I read anything related to real life tragedy. I read books on the Titanic, JFKs, MLKs, and RFKs assassinations, the Hindenburg, etc. Even tho I read about these events they still have an aura of legend, or fairytale. This movie made the Titanic, suddenly, very real. It was shocking and heartbreaking. Most of all, it's difficult to describe exactly how I felt seeing the "story" come to life. Talk about a reality check! 😮

1:05:22 t's essential to understand the importance of the electrical engineers' work aboard the Titanic. Their role was vital in keeping the ship's electrical systems running, including the lights that provided crucial illumination. During the sinking, they where doing everything they could to keep the lights on and ensure a safer environment. As the ship sinks, the boilers turn off and therefore the electric generators fail, so the people in the electrical room have to turn up the switches each time. In that scene you can already see the last attempt to maintain the electricity and it ended like this. Remember that the ship broke in 2 right between the first boiler and the engines, so, even if the order to the electrical engineers had not existed in reality, the ship would have been left without power precisely because it slowly broke into 2. and, obviously, completely disconnecting the boilers from the rear section, giving a result similar to what the film offers.

I love the musicians and the fact that that bit was fairly accurate by most accounts. There is some small debate about what song they actually played at the very end but there’s a strong argument that the song used here was the actual one. There’s also an amazing quote about them from a second class passenger via Wikipedia. “Many brave things were done that night, but none were more brave than those done by men playing minute after minute as the ship settled quietly lower and lower in the sea. The music they played served alike as their own immortal requiem and their right to be recalled on the scrolls of undying fame.”

As soon as you dive into the world of the Titanic one day and start to be interested in the details, it absorbs you completely. There is an incredible number of coincidences and such situations in which it is simply impossible to believe that this is a series of accidents. And then the subconscious makes you plunge into gloomy thoughts, seeing the destroyed hull of the ship and your experience of knowing about many passengers and the location of cabins and restaurants, promenade decks, you suddenly realize that you know this place on the ship and its history well, you already remember who you saw here the last time before death, and what did this person say. And you can't stop looking at and arguing new material about the Titanic. It will take some time and you can already lead tours of the Titanic with your eyes closed - you are so well oriented and you can talk about each room for hours with all even insignificant details - from who designed the design, what color the chairs were, to what anthem they sang behind it piano and what was on the menu. Yes, it's absorbing and insanely interesting. In the film, only a love story was invented, all other events were real. Everything is known almost by the minute, the actions of many crew members and passengers. The otkester played and they all died. The melodies they sang are known. There were enough lifeboats for only 30% of the passengers (then the number of lifeboats was calculated not from the number of passengers, but from the deadweight of the vessel). However, no one forbade the installation of more boats, but the company decided that they would spoil the view of the vessel and clutter up the promenade decks. So the company installed boats according to the very minimum according to the maritime laws of those years. The life time in water at a temperature of 2 degrees is about 20 minutes.

The older couple who were cuddled up on their bed they are actually based on real couple who owned Macys department in new york city. They were last seen hugging each other as the ship went down as his wife would not leave him by getting on a lifeboat. So they stayed together.

There was a book published titled "The Wreckage of the Titan" - written FOURTEEN YEARS before the original Titanic disaster. . . . And: now the Titan is being used AGAIN as a premonition. There, once again, is a gigantic ship set to sail next month!! A 'City' on seas. From New York to the Carribbean Islands. Probably not on the first trip - but that 'city' is doomed.

It felt indecent the way you kept laughing when people were dying onscreen knowing that this tragedy really happened and Cameron depicted the chain of events as close to reality as he could, bar the fictional love story of course.

One thing that I think was really smart and added to the tension was that at the beginning of the film they showed via that computer model exactly what happened to the ship, so when it came time for the boat to start sinking, we as viewers knew exactly what was about to happen (how it would essentially crack in half and tip upward and then sink bit by bit) and we had to wait for each moment to arrive, anticipating the horror of it all. I wasn't going to see this in the theatre, I told my best friend, "Why? We know almost everyone died! It's going to be really horrible and sad." But there was so much buzz about how "amazing" the film was, that finally the two of us decided to go see it. It was pretty incredible on the big screen, for sure. (And horrifying.)

Fun facts: - James Cameron wife plays rose granddaughter - James Cameron has been to titanic 33 times he loves the history of titanic - James Cameron did the actual drawing that looks like jack is drawing - the first scene Kate and Leo did together was the naked and drawing scene when he says “on the bed, the couch” it wasn’t meant to be in but they kept it in - most of characters rose hung around with in first class was real people - the old people who died in the bed together owned Macy’s and she refused to leave him they was as a real couple - the violin did play till the end - rose does die at end, if you see time it’s time titanic sank and everyone in room died on titanic - when she said il never let go she never wanted to go of her promise to jack, which she always kept - James Cameron said jack had to die as the full thing of “making each day count” would have been for nothing - rose spitting in cals face wasn’t in the script, she was meant to use hairpin but she felt it would be better as jack taught her it - the water was so cold on set they ended up poorly - James Cameron let the cast improvise and jacks character was telling her what he done in life and she feels trapped. So she wants to spit like a man. - the scene below deck was improvised as well dancing and just having fun even the spitting scene. - Leo and Kate are best friends still and he is godfather to her kids. He helped her with her divorce.

The iceberg actually didn’t do much damage it popped the rivets holding the haul together and opened the ship to the sea. The length of the damage was enough to sink the ship.
