I remember a boxing analyst named Max Kellerman had a great analogy that I think is applicable to fighting games and why they're so good as a spectator sport. If you're at an intersection of two roads, and in three of the corners you have people playing traditional sports, and in the last corner you have a fight - where do you think all the spectators are going to be?

🤣 - It's funny that something like that works. I personally don't like exploiting things for easy wins, and whenever I figure out something like that exists in a game, I actively avoid it. You only need about 5 combos to reach even master in sf6 1.Light (punch)combo, to interrupt fake block strings or punish -4 or worse moves 2.Heavy(punch/kick) combo to punish wakeup reversals or blocked sweeps 3.Neutral button into drive rush confirm combo(like ken crouching medium kick into lp or mp)imo this is the most important combo confirm because it allows you to convert off of stray hits in the neutral and allows you to get in on opponent's wakeup and hit them with a meaty to get more combos.And if they don't get hit you have enough time to recognise that and stop your combo without getting punished and still being+ 4. All resources dump combo (extension of 2) to finish off low health character with a super 5. Drive impact punish combo( mid screen and corner wall splat)

I think that fighting games are the perfect competitive game, from both a skill expression and spectating standpoint, but I've also never been that great at them myself. It's just so fun to watch - they have the some of the best commentators in the business, there's no hidden information, there's no complicated stage gimmicks, there's no 45 minute slog where the winner snowballed an advantage from minute 10, there's no blaming teammates. It's just two combatants, 99 seconds, whoever loses their health bar first loses.

@TonyTheTGR Ай бұрын
I dunno if I'd do the full chronology - to begin with; some versions are FAR better than others and some can be omitted entirely. Secondly, some older games are more technical and faster-paced than newer ones and it may serve you better to come *back* to those later. If you're playing a spread though, here's my recommendations: - SF2 Hyper Fighting (SUPER fundamental, they don't even have supers yet and characters are limited so matchups are, too - however, they also don't have Target Combos, either) - SFV (good variety of characters that will carry both backwards and forwards through the series, a good moderate pacing and very responsive controls - there's some complexity to the variety of V-Skills/V-Triggers but they still work with simplistic inputs and many will be insightful for executing system mechanics of other SF games) - SF6 (roster is still fairly smaller, it's not overly complex, it's current and not too fast to keep up with) - SF Alpha 2 (18 characters, but here's where the pacing picks up a bit and you get to learn how to mess with Custom Combos and different levels of super moves) - From there, in any order: Alpha 3, Ultra 4, and Third Strike You could technically pick up Third Strike earlier, but again - it's one of the more punchy-paced games so it's better to learn fundamentals at the slower-paced games before speeding up your reactions to that; but it does also have a respectably smaller roster so it's easier to track matchups, and about a third of the cast is arguably overlookable.

Trying to translate MK to SF is very challenging, although of the bunch, MK9 is probably the closest to launch from. That said, there's many characters that have a mechanic called a "Target Combo," which is very similar to MK-style dial-a-combos. Most Target Combos, upon connecting, have natural follow-ups or make for good setups. Characters such as Guy, Lucia, Kimberly, and Ibuki have a common one that goes LP > MP > HP > HK. Other characters with Target Combo focus include Luke and Dudley. Hugo is also one of the funnest-designed grappler characters ever, IMO; but that sadly limits you to SF3 Second Impact, Third Strike, and Ultra SF4. I'd recommend, instead of picking up someone just because they're popular, you learn a character with a few Target Combo options because those already play to your mechanical strength with MK combos; and then tack SF fundamentals around that. Combos as a whole across SF is very different to execute than MK. Generally, you'll do a couple of lights, or a medium or deep heavy attack, *interrupt* that animation with a special move, and then carry from specials, with a second motion, to a super. So really basic SF combos come from (attack, motion + attack, second motion + attack)... so long as the attack connects (hit or block), it'll segue naturally into the next move. EX specials - combining one motion with two punch or kick buttons, will usually give you a high-priority version of that move that on hit, will open up opponents for following up; this is usually used in a predict-your-opponent or respond-with-punishment in mind, at least at first. Once you get familiarity with the flow of that feel, try going from your poke to an EX move, and then following THAT with a full combo or just a special-to-super. That said - don't let the additional buttons make you think the intricacy of special/super moves is "harder," because most every special has a Light/Medium/Heavy variant. For instance, Sonic Booms, Blanka Balls, and Psycho Crushers, hold back, press forward and choose any punch - will move at different speeds/durations depending on *which* punch you choose. You'll eventually home in on a strength that works and feels natural for your combos to execute, and that's where lab practice comes in. If you land a crouching MP with Cammy, which Cannon Drill feels better to go with? In my case, medium kick is just a natural motion, and these reflexes carry well from one character to another once you get those down. Not all base attacks are special-move cancelable, so it's important to know which ones will be for your character, as well as their speed and range. The final, *crucial* different with SF compared to MK/Soul Calibur, is learning how to space your jump-ins to be ambiguous or how to deliberately same-side or cross-up with attacks. Pretty universally, SF characters each have one or two jumping attacks that will hit both in front of, and behind you, in the air. For most characters, this is Jumping Medium Kick, but your mileage may vary. (Dudley has Medium Punch or Heavy Kick, and Hugo can with Light Kick or down + Heavy Punch in midair as well.) Street Fighter is "hold back to block," so making your opponent guess which way "back" will be results in your left-right mixup game and is a big part of how you open up opponents, or fake them out without throwing an attack at all. Usually you'll want to do this as the opponent is on a hard knockdown (laying on the ground) so you don't just get punched out of it.

@therayldeal6683 Ай бұрын
Those are a lot of great hints! Thanks, my friend! The difference in jumps between SF and MK is one of the first things I noticed while playing yesterday. That's definitely something I'll need to get used to.

OH YEAH!!! Parrying. You'll usually only see this in 3rd Strike, but it can be fun to use in Killer Instinct, Tekken 7/8 (low parry only), Ultimate MvC3's Heroes and Heralds Mode, or CvS2 as well. The parry is a little weird to explain - there's two windows to make it work - the "press" window and the "release" window, of tapping forward or down. Personally, *I* have more luck using the "release" window. So if I'm anticipating an attack or fireball hitting me, I press forward and try to time my *release* of the button with the moment of impact. Multi-hit attacks all follow one of three rhythms, and this is a "once you know, you know" kind of thing that only comes with experience, and that's just timing the remaining parries to the first one. SF6 parrying is a very different beast. You have a general parry function available by holding down MP+MK - it'll consume one bar of Drive immediately, and will slowly drain over time as you continue holding it... but as your opponent keeps attacking and you parry, it'll refill the Drive Gauge. There's also a "Perfect Parry" that you get when timing your MP+MK input precisely to your moment of impact, and this works more like a dodge-counter in Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, the game will slow-mo for a moment and you can then input any attack to break or counter your opponent. Again, don't begin with trying to be fancy here, just do a special or special-to-super to begin with, or see what EX specials will open up for you. Some characters in SF5 have a parry-like V-Skill mechanic with the same buttons as well; and for some attacks, you can use Focus Attack (again, same buttons) for counterattack purposes in SF4.

Yeah, in MK there's a pretty standard, mechanical jump that's universal between characters, and in SF, everyone has their own unique gravitational field! This is especially prevalent in characters like Claw (Vega/Balrog, depending on nationalization), or Guy. This is to give different characters different optimal spacing from one another, so there's always a tug-of-war for control/momentum in matches between different characters that plays out in the spacing.

One thing about SF6 with Modern is that you don't have to use auto combos, like at all. The best use for auto combos is actually gaining access to normals that aren't in the rest of your kit like in Classic. So like for example, the only way to get Cammy's standing heavy punch in Modern is by doing the first hit of auto combo 3, which you can then cancel into doing whatever else you'd like. You can even map the auto-combo button out for something else if you truly don't like it.
@therayldeal6683
@therayldeal6683 Ай бұрын
I get that, but at that point, why not just play classic? That's where my mind goes anyway, as now I'd have to remap things and play in a super funky fashion. I just prefer to play games in the way that best reflects the core soul of the game - which is why I play games guideless. I am a little confused though. If the HP is in the first hit of Auto Combo 3, then isn't that button essentially just HP, or does it work differently?
@darellarocho5729
@darellarocho5729 Ай бұрын
@@therayldeal6683 Well for me I play Modern even though I have been playing since SF4 with the Classic SF control scheme. I chose Modern in SF6 simply because I enjoyed it more when I tried it out and it has a nice fluidity to the gameplay for me. Considering you are a huge MK fan I thought you'd enjoy Modern over Classic since that control scheme is more close to MK's control scheme. Not necessarily, I'll explain. So if you do Cammy's entire auto combo 3 she'll do the following: HP > H Target Combo > OD Dive Kick > Lvl 3 Depending on where you left off in the combo when pressing the auto combo button you can cancel wherever you left off into something else, like for example you could: In Classic: HP > H Target Combo > Drive Rush Cancel > HP > H Target Combo > OD Spiral Arrow > OD Cannon Spike In Modern: Auto combo 3 (first 2 button presses) > Drive Rush Cancel > Auto combo 3 (first 2 button presses) > OD Spiral Arrow > OD Cannon Spike Those two combos I listed are exactly the same, but that's how you'd perform it in Modern. You'd basically stop your auto combo 3 halfway through and cancel it with a DR.

More and more people need to embrace modern controls I feel, because it really is such a deep system when you look at it and the fact you can customize further to your liking and allows you to enhance the mental, chess like aspect of fighting games that you normally can't focus on due to feeling overwhelmed with how to perform vene a basic combo on classic. I also tell people to learn both modern and classic especially modern because that's where the future of fighting games is headed and modern controls will be the new standard going forward, which is why Tekken and SNK City of the Wolves implemented their own modern controls options I to their games and followed Srreet Fighter's lead but I definitely understand and empathize with the uploaders view of wanting that specific satisfaction of getting down classic as well.

Don't skip Capcom vs SNK 2. It's is a street fighter ass VS game with SNK characters. If you play games in order you should shoehorn it inbetween 3S and SF4. Also Negative Edge is a thing in every Street Fighter game and what it is is when you release a button it counts as an input for special/supers. For example if you are Ryu (in most SF games) you can crouch mk, quarter circle forward any punch (keep holding that button), quarter circle forward relase the punch button and what you'll get is crouching medium kick canceling into fire ball canceling into super. You can turn this off in SF6 but it is a thing for every SF game before it and you couldn't turn it off in the old games.

@@therayldeal6683 I’m proposing that you can play the CvS games for both your street fighter run and snk run. Because the Capcom Grooves are basically Alpha 3 and SF3 grooves. It fits right in after those games. The SNK Grooves are more spread out among their franchises Art of Fighting, KoF98 and Samurai Showdown/Garou. Might be nice to revisit after you played the SNK games (SNK games list is much longer than the Street Fighter games). For the SF2 games. The games aren’t cutting you any slack with input leniency and you will have a hard time doing even the most basic combos. You can probably try the negative edge stuff much more successfully starting from the Alpha games. Also input help for “mash” moves like Chun lightening legs. You need to do 5 kick inputs in quick succession (I think SFV is the only one that require 4 inputs and SF6 doesn’t have any mash inputs) and the final input determines the strength of the move. So you can buffer the inputs behind animation frames and in later games when you have normals that cancel into those moves it’s preferably to buffer the inputs behind those moves. If you have an arcade stick or hitbox type stick you can just run your fingers across the row of buttons back and forth, or you can piano your fingers, and you can activate a “mash” type special really fast. It’s much harder on controller but it might work if you re map the face buttons and some players do re map the buttons for easier execution.

A lot of younger generation especially in US when they talking about SF eventually they will tank about Capcom VS SNK 2. Here's the thing, no one know what SNK really is. They're not familiar with it, and only know from hearings that SNK fighting games (ex: KoF) are hard. If you think learning SF is hard, well I can tell you for sure that from the perspective of someone who grow up with KoF that SF is fairly easy.

MK has opened up my mind to other fighting games as well. Also, my favorite fighting game of all time is MK:Deception and I actually mained Bo' Rai Cho. Then, I would get so good at the game, that I would play others like Ashrah, Li Mei, Kobra and Baraka. It also helped that I had a childhood friend that would play too and we spent countless hours going against each other so much, that we kinda started getting good simultaneously and on par with each other. He mained Baraka and Raiden. I remember how I got good at using "Puke Puddle" right on his feet every single time, like I perfected that range and he would get so mad and fat shame Bo'. It was hilarious! Then, I had a very smooth transition to Tekken. And at first I used Kazuya to get a feel of the game, but I found my main in Ganryu, and I was... This character jells well so much with me, I don't need to think while punishing. But he's not even that much of an important character at all. Then, I said: "Fuck it!" and embrace him, learning even hard things (in T5), like micro-dashing mid-combo and crouch cancelling. Because I'm one of like 2 Ganryu mains on the planet, it feels like I know some secret ancient knowledge bestowed only upon me, because nobody knows he has those intricacies (before they made him easier in T7, but I digress). Then, I went to KoF. KoF is pretty hard for me, but after giving up on Street Fighter and 2D's in general, I decided to do those challenges from KoF '98 UM and KoF 2002 UM and have discovered SNK is pretty good at teaching the game, even though I still can't pull off a Max Mode cancel into run attack (which they made it easier in KoFXV, the character runs by themselves now) or have a very hard time linking a jump in into a ground attack, I found a main in Kensou, who is a zoner. And trying to find combos with him is proving to be very helpful with my feel on the overall gameplay. There's this interview in which Rangchu, the World champion for the Tekken World Tour, claimed he picked the worst character to main in the game - Panda - because he had trouble with sidestepping and she nullifies the need with other tools which allowed him to slowly get good at the core mechanics while still having fun. PS.: I have tried and tried and tried and I haven't found my main in Street Fighter, which prevents me from getting into the game (doesn't help that I despise the shoto archetype - yeah, I'm a hypocrite, Kensou is kinda "shoto-ish". The difference is I know what to try when I'm close with him). And all of that's okay. Street Fighter is not for me, combo'ing is a big part of the enjoyment for me, and if I struggle with that, then it's a wrap. But I love watching MenaRD play Blanka. I think it got clear that I love seeing underdogs being played.

@@therayldeal6683 Actually, CoreAGaming released an amazing video last night breaking down different "types" of fighting games (it sucks that it's an HOUR long though). and 2D, ground based, traditional fighting games, are the LEAST combo focused of all the fighting game types. with the exception of mortal kombat, which, funnily enough, he separates it as it's own exception in the "Family tree". Sure, combos are a part of it, but as I mentioned in my modern mode comment, as long as you know a Single, simple "decent" one. You'll do fine. And while I do enjoy fighting games from the other groups, I do enjoy them for different reasons. When I do feel like doing long flashy combos, I will generally go towards air dashers. If I go to SF though, it's because the biggest contributor to winning and losing, is decision making and experience. Sure, as always, execution is definitely a factor, but it is the smallest factor in these games compared to others. Newer players are always shocked that I don't spend time in training mode. I do. Just not in street fighter. Because it's not needed.

I dont understand anything at all about this video, if you liked the competitive matches and their analysis so much you should know the bare minimum of how the game works, otherwise you were just watching something pretending to understand it and if you didnt understand it how could you like it so much? if you got some knowledge from consuming all that huge amount of content you would be able to understand what actually matters in a match, you even mentioned knowing about footsies from a godzilla game, so how come all that is unlearned the second you boot up street fighter 6? all the problems you had with getting used to the button layout, links, cancels, and supers are completely normal, every single new players goes through them, its not a you issue, people who love these games push through the early moments when everything is difficult, instead you say youll go on a side quest to play every single street fighter? that makes no sense for two reasons, 1. you still dont even understand how the games work so how will you appreciate what changes in each game besides the obvious? 2. you are not willing to look up guides or info (despite saying you watch educational content from fighting game creators) so how will you understand the nuance of the more hidden mechanics of the older games? i understand if you wanna make reviews coming from an extremely casual perspective, but dont you think that approaching the games like this will create a very misguided idea for them in your mind? especially when these games are soo deep and you wont even scratch the surface by skimming over each one of them since theres so many, thats why educational content and guides are useful, people can share the insights theyve taken so long to gather, both from their own experience and other peoples. i dont want this to come across as harsh criticism, i did enjoy the video its just your approach to the games i kind of disagree with

I've always found, without fail, that guides kind of ruin my experience with a game. They do make learning things easier, but I prefer to problem solve and try to think my way through why something isn't working the way I think it is. I've been having some real fun with World Warrior this week, and I've come close to beating it a couple times with Ryu, but I've been forcing myself to restart if I can't beat it within 10 continues. I approach fighting games the same way I do souls games, as I find overcoming the challenge to be the real draw of these styles of gameplay dense experiences. I stopped watching Max Dood and JMCrofts when I started playing World Warrior, and I never watch anything from them on games I'm trying to learn. I only watch them talk about games/series I don't actively play.
@inksword6029
@inksword6029 Ай бұрын
@@therayldeal6683 that is true if youre approaching the games purely as a single player experience, but are they really? you said in another comment you wanted to see why people in the arcades thought what they did about each iteration, how will you do that exactly? you realize these people played against each other, they looked for information in magazine guides and learned from better players than them even then, if that is really your stance then how the video comes across can be kind of misleading, i understand the title is more catchy written like this, but neither the title or how you explain things in the video gives off the idea you just wanna experience these games as a single player only thing like if you were playing a dark souls game, if you wanted to make this point, you wouldnt put so much emphasis on the online and competitive scene, whats the point of building that up in the video if you just wanna play them against ai? only like spectating? but how really? you said part of what makes it interesting is the metaphorical game of chess between players, how are you able to even notice that when you dont play yourself? thats like if someone who never played chess and barely knows the rules says they love watching and analyzing pro level matches then some points still stand, how exactly are you gonna analyze and review these older games, if you are just scratching the surface with each one of them? what exactly is the review gonna be about, what will you be able to talk about? cause everyone can play these games on an emulator and beat the arcade mode with some effort again as im writing this i know it comes across as really harsh but i am really just missing the whole point of an otherwise very well made video

@therayldeal6683 Ай бұрын
@@inksword6029 I did say in the last section in the video that I love to "explore older games in long running franchises so that I can see the growth of each series over time." There's no perfect way to replicate the arcade experience, you are right about that, but I'm going to try to play the games as close to that level as possible, limiting myself in terms of credits and knowledge. My father went to the arcades all the time in the 80s and early 90s, and he never read magazines. He did learn from talking to other players, but in my mind there's a difference between a conversation like what we're having now and watching a video. I prefer discussing topics with people I can actually actively talk to if that makes sense. Maybe I should have reiterated it more than once, but I've never really enjoyed playing fighting games online. I like Mortal Kombat online, but that's it out of all the ones I've played, and that's more to do with the legacy/transferable skills I have as someone who's played Ed Boon's creations my whole life. I do mention playing MK online and I had thought the fact that I didn't have access to online for MK9 and backwards would have made it clear that I've always either had to play these games solo or chose to. I definitely should have said something directly about that though. I did say at the top of the video that I'm definitely more in the casual sphere of the fighting game fans. Starting from the beginning and working my way through the series will provide me a more scaffolded way of teaching myself how to play SF, and that's what I'm going to focus on in the videos - what I'm able to notice and figure out by just interacting with the mechanical text of the game. Since I don't do this for a living and am nowhere close to that being a possibility, I thought it would be fun to see how much I'm able to learn on my own, share that with everyone else, and see what gaps in my knowledge still exist after 11 games. From there, I'm going to do the same for another series (if this video series does well).
