I'm sorry to be a downer... but having $400k of life insurance on a guy who makes $70-$80k/year is grossly underinsured. Especially if he had 3 kids (they'll need braces, food, a permenant house for the family to live in now, college tuition for 3, etc). I work for a CFP, and I'm estimating this man needed at least ~$1.3M of insurance to protect the loss of income that he would have brought to his family were he to still be alive. Probably more, since the wife was a stay at home mom with no income, and therefore no 401k/retirement to build for herself. Not trying to beat up on anyone, and I'm happy that he was smart to get at least some insurance, but hoping to warn people out there that you will probably need more life insurance than you think.

My dad died when I was 9 and my sister was 1. My mum was a stay at home mum while my dad worked. Thank god he worked for the company he was working for. They gave my mum enough money to pay off the entire house and she gets money each month for the rest of her life to live on, and my sister and I get money each month until we're 18 or finish full time education. I'm so thankful.

It was all money i have in the bank but i dont regret it at all. All up i spent about $5000, including a very well needed holiday. So thankful that this dad covered his family. My family had a scare a few months back. My dad had a heart attack and had to get triple bypass surgery. He had little chance of surviving the surgery. Thank the Gracious Lord he did. But before the surgery we (his immediate family) made sure everything was tied up in a bow. The will, the power of attorney, enduring guardian, advance health plan, everything. And he made sure that we knew his wishes and the doctors and lawyer knew his wishes. He is perfectly fine now but there is peace of mind there to know everything is done and dusted. He has enough tucked away in his retirement and life insurance that we can easily pay off debts including the house and put some to investment. I started to listen to Dave a couple months before his heart attack so I now have knowledge on how to handle money. Thankyou Dave.

I had to get a job and move out before I graduated. really wish my mom was better with that money because she is broke and struggling to pay her total of 500 in bills for a month. wish she would've seen this before she made any rash decisions. hope everything goes well for this family. When I lost my wife of 42 years to cancer 9 years ago, the first thing I did after her funeral was to sit down and get a total of my financial obligations so I had a square one so to speak to proceed from. I contacted our credit card companies to close her accounts. I was informed that she was the owner on the cards and I was just an authorized user. That being the said, the debts were written off because she was now deceased and her estate was insolvent, thus I wasn’t obligated to pay them off. After sending them death certificates and a letter from our attorney, I was basically debt free. One lesson I learned from all this was to never put both parties names on car loans, car registrations, and credit cards.

@sbrazenor26 жыл бұрын
He normally doesn't come into the comments section, but I do know that they have people that manage e-mails from the website that they have. Primarily the advice is about the same as a 'normal' single person or single parent household. Firstly, you have to regulate spending based on the income that you can obtain. Secondly, you have to have a good inventory of what you're up against. (Some people don't even know what they own, owe, or have owed to them.) Thirdly, you've got to figure based on a surplus of income or with additional earnings and selling items, how to get yourself debt free ASAP. (With at least $1000 as an emergency fund.) Then you'll want to put together savings. (His normal rule is 3-6 months, with 3 being more appropriate for single people and 6 for married people or those with children.) Then you'll start working on retirement, educational planning for children and paying off a home. (baby steps 4-6.) I'm not one of Dave's people (and employee or financial counselor, but I do have a personal finance background), but I have read his program and I'm swiftly pushing through baby step 2 myself. I do have the skills and experience to help with budgeting and planning, if you did need any help. There's also Financial Peace University and if you can't afford it, I know sometimes people will help you along and give it to you - so that you have a support structure in place and a plan. Losing someone is hard. Losing someone that's the primary earner in a household without insurance, is unfathomably difficult. I certainly wish you the best with that. I can only imagine how hard it must be. Even being single, I have insurances so that upon my death my family (mother, sisters, nieces and nephews) will have a paid off house, car, and about $210,000 of life insurance. (Eventually if I have a wife and kids, that'll go to them, obviously.)

If you are referring to adult children, I disagree. We expect to outlive our parents, and we shouldn’t expect to inherit anything. Inheritance is a privilege, not a right. We don’t expect to lose our spouses in the prime of their lives. This family was dependent on the husband’s income, and they’d been raising their children together. His death was premature and catastrophic in every way at a time when their young children’s needs are the greatest they will ever be.

My teenage daughter had a friend whose father was killed in an auto accident. The family got 450,000 in insurance and had blown through all of it in just under two years. They had leased two expensive cars that they couldn’t pay for and had to return. Grief spending is a real thing. They hadn’t even put any money aside for the 16 year old daughter to go to college out of the insurance money. They lost their house too. The mother’s sister and father circled her like sharks and got them to buy cars for them and “ loan” them cash that they never repaid. Her sister even stole checks and stole money from them and she wouldn’t prosecute. If you won’t prosecute your bank will not cover the thefts. It was terrible.

Thanks I did it anyway. It’ll cost me 1700 a year for next ten years. I basically gave up cable and restaurant Sunday’s. I also have the option just paying it off now at 10000. There’s still plenty of income left over for investing.

Dave is wrong about not having 2 cars: when one breaks down you have a backup. If both are paid off, keep them both.
@justwait98225 жыл бұрын
Just get it fixed if it breaks down. If you have 2 cars you have to keep insurance on both or else you won't be able to drive the other one if the first breaks down. Also would have to do yearly registration fees and state emissions/ safety for 2 cars instead of 1. It's also sitting there depreciating and not being used. Sell it, drive the wheels off the van and get a cheap used car when it breaks down.

contact Socal Security ASAP. You will get cash benefits each month for each child up age 18. Remember that surviving spouses can retire on deceased partners Social Security at age 60. Also there is a very small death benefit that would probably pay for a months groceries. All this helped me a lot when I was 44 and my husband unexpectdly died. God bless in this tough time.

Lisa Mish. You should not tell some one how many children they should have it may be becuse of religion or simply a decision made by a husband and wife. Women can't win I feel you have the conservatives telling them what to do with her body if she becomes pregnant than we have outhers saying they are horrible for gaving to many baby's. We women should support what ever a women decides to do . Do I think it was a good idea to v have seven children ? It dosen t matter what I think . This lady brought up her kids by a lot of hard work ,I'm shure it wasn't easy. Thire are couples with one child and are not great at providing for thire one kid.

I've been there, only it was sudden death from a heart attack (two weeks after 9/11). My dad died when he was 44 and I was 12. My mom is an absolute warrior. She raised two responsible, successful men all while dealing with bipolar disorder. She didn't have any financial knowledge, but she tried her best. The good news is my dad was cheap! That rubbed off a bit on us boys.

Terrible loss. Thank God for Social Security widow benefits and your children will receive benefits until they are eighteen. I would imagine Social Security may be along the lines of close to $3,000 a month. Save and invest the money by following Dave's advice. If you go back to work your children will still receive their benefits from Social Security. I imagine you might want to hold off on that until your six year old is a bit older to go back to work. Maybe you could start a home business or work at home when you are able to.

@@carolyndavis6657 If you read her comment you see that she said she personally is paying a price. It's personal for her and it clouds her vision to the fact that a one income family could work for some. I'm a stay at home mom, I recognize that my husband will get tired of working which is why we are saving money so he can retire at 55. We also will be working on paying off our mortgage in 10 years so when he's at 40 years old he won't have the pressure of having to make much money to support the family. He doesn't have to make much now as I plan to grow 80% of our produce, I raise chickens, live frugally doing couponing, buying second-hand or clearance items, etc. He told me he felt maxed out at what he could earn so I took it upon myself to lower our expenses. It works for us .
