My opinions on ebikes is changing rapidly. Auburn is brutal to ride without shuttling, I get that I need to be in better shape but the ability to do stagecoach to culvelt to rocky to confluence, back up stagecoach, down manzanita, over to flood, in 100 degree weather sounds awesome. I've looked at the heart rate data from guys I know who ride ebikes, and it's not a motorcycle. The old saying, it doesn't get easier, you just go faster, doesn't 100% translate, but man it would be nice to have some help up the climbs.

it takes balls to ride an ebike ?? why, cause your concerned about what others think of you? Maybe the problem is you and not the idiots that think they have the right to tell you what kind of bike to ride . It’s amazing that e bike haters hate something that they don’t want. That’s like saying , i hate spinach and therefore i’m not going to buy any spinach and i hate you if you do like spinach . 😳😳

OK listen guys. MTB is 10x better on an Ebike. Not twice better - 10x. You're surfing a never-ending wave and skiing a never-ending hill. I can get two runs in the time it takes the others to do one + pedal up, and I'm 54. Zach was taking the roads to go back up but you don't have to do that with the Ebike - just go straight back *up* thru the gnar. Keep the weight forward on steep uphills and you can granny back up anything. Now going up the drops is just as much fun as coming down, and you also see your overall skilz improve that much faster. Backpack battery, 2500 watt Luna motor fits virtually any MTB for about $1500.

I use to really enjoy riding the trails that parallel the railroad tracks from Auburn to Colfax on my Yamaha wr426 dirtbike but I got to be honest... I’d hella enjoy riding an Ebike on the same trails. Hit up the Taco Bell in Colfax and turn around and head back to Auburn!! Or in the summer navigate my way all the way to Truckee. We’re blessed up here in Norcal GET AFTER IT TRAIL PEAK! There’s some gnarly hill climbs that even on an ebike would be a hike-a-bike but still worth the effort.

Haha....at the 8:30 mark, you said WORD FOR WORD why I argue with people about E-bikes and fitness. I am CONVINCED that most people who say you don't get a workout have not ridden one. In ECO mode, if you choose to push it with your pedaling, it will absolutely keep you in your target heart rate zone for CV benefit. As you pointed out, it just "takes the edge" off the climbs. Never mind how the weight works your core and upper body even on the descents. That's NOT what you would want for your every day bike if you were wanting to be competitive in Enduro, because you aren't pushing your threshold and getting anaerobic as a part of that regimen. BUT...for casual riders who are doing what MTB'ing is supposed to be all about....HAVING FUN...and getting some exercise benefit from it, they're great. For people who would otherwise sit at home rather than grind it out at a boring gym, E-bikes are literally the perfect way for them to get out and at least do something. MOST people will lose weight if they change nothing else, simply because it WILL burn calories. Will E-bikers jump on an XC bike and go destroy at the local races in Cat 1...NOPE, not if that's all they ride, but that's NOT the point. Most of them don't care at all about racing or competing, unless it's for laughs and fun, so when people call them "cheaters," who exactly are they cheating? Especially when the few I know...are HUGE advocates, and have either built entire trail systems, or volunteer to maintain a section of trail. I just encourage people, especially the staunchest "traditionalists" to think differently. It's not for you....for sure, and I don't expect a mass exodus of the single speed crowd to jump to E-bikes. It's not for me, other than possibly at a later point, or for some occasional "fun" rides, but I'm not getting bikes loaned to me to ride. For $5K, with a kid heading off to college soon, that's not responsible. BUT....in the end, this is about having FUN. It's why we all ride MTB's. If people are on E-bikes, and they are having FUN, then why do we as a MTB community want to "eat our young?" It doesn't make sense for people to work against advocacy for E-bikes and expanding the number of people out on the trails. That's one more person that may help maintain trail, or get their kids into the sport, or get two friends involved. Rather than acting like they are the devil reincarnated, and making them look as bad as possible to land managers and others, why not take the other approach and acknowledge that in the pedal assist category, they aren't anything to be concerned about versus standard bikes. Instead, we ahve MTB'ers working hard to show them in a bad light. Why??? I will FOREVER contend that an aggressive heavier Enduro/DH style rider will do far more damage to a trail in the long run, than casual riders on E-bikes. So....let's stop demonizing them, and use them as a tool to get more people on the trails, and proliferate our sport!!!
@TheNorcalMtb
@TheNorcalMtb 5 жыл бұрын
I'll add to your point regarding trail degradation. E-mtb's do not roost dirt or act in anyway similar to a dirtbike. I would bet that they are nearly the same as regular mountain bikes which is same amount of degradation caused by hikers. Both of which is far less than horse damage......

Solid points man, especially about attracting more riders. MTB, while getting much bigger lately (maybe because of e bikes), needs to grow, especially in the US, if we want more access and places to ride.
@willbros1499

@@TrailPeek ... What's crazy is, MTB is actually shrinking nationally. Sales of bikes has dropped, and the number of new riders has been going down. The trends aren't positive for MTB'ing according to the most recent "People for Bikes" studies. THAT is one key reason we need to continue to get younger riders involved, and we need to rally together, and accept that making a very difficult sport a little easier for some people who prefer that, isn't the end of the world. Let's face it, the people who are the best at things, are not the ones who shy away from a challenge. For E-bikes, my guess would be that most casual riders would think..."Cool, I can go get in 15 miles in about an hour and a half and not be wiped." The serious rider who rides them from time to time would probably think "I wonder how many miles I can get in before the battery completely dies, if I leave it in ECO mode?" Then they would have someone come pick them up. :-)

Completely agree. I haven't been on the bike much since my wife was pregnant with our son. She was my main riding partner and she just never felt comfortable on the bike after that. Now with the constraints of having a 4 year old, I've gotten out of shape. The days I have gotten back on the bike have been pretty painful and not consistent enough to get back to where it isn't just suffering. I would love to have an e-bike to ease myself back in. The cost is the only thing stopping me right now. It may be a pipe dream but I'm hoping they come down just a bit in the next few years (probably wont wait that long but whatevs). Other way is for the kid to get more interested in biking. I'm trying but not forcing. One way or the other...

Great idea heading to a OHV park, something lacking from most ebike reviews. I have been trying to figure out why a buddy of mine plows through rock gardens like its a paved road... he has 80lbs on me. Starting to think the extra weight of the battery/motor with a low COG helps with plowing through chunk with less hassle.

I ride 3 or 4 times a week now - cover more miles - still same excellent fitness level but now saving my knees (I've been mountain biking 30 years). I can't imagine going back to my 'clockwork' bike! USA needs to catch up with rest of world and classify Class 1 bikes like regular bikes - it will happen.

Also I have a bunch of sick wma trails near me, but you have to ride on 4 miles of service road to do them, and the loops are like 9 miles. As long as its not throttle assist I do not have a problem with them being on trails at all.

I thought you only used the e-bike for pedal assist going uphill. You use it to bomb down faster too!!??
@willbros1499
@willbros1499 5 жыл бұрын
To some extent, you can. They have a governor that's set at 20 mph for that category. But..what's nice is, when you brake for a corner, when you come put of the corner, one or two pedal cranks with FAR less energy, and you're right back up to full speed again, where it would normally take much longer with FAR more effort. The other thing that will surprise people is...just what he was explaining...how well the suspension works. It feels more plush, almost like a moto, which I assume is because the bikes are usually around 15 lbs heavier. They feel PLANTED. If you're on an aggessive geo, the stability is ridiculous as well. What they don't do...is stop quite as well, and they are very difficult to hop...especially getting the rear wheel off the ground. What is also amazing is...they jump WAY better than people would think. They compress well into jumps; again...think moto, so when the suspension releases, the bikes lift way more than you would expect. THey land like you're on a pillow. They're hard to really boost or flick in the air for mortals, although I've seen guys do it, but they jump suprisingly well by just having the right speed and body position on the take-off. They just work...better than most people would expect. You get ready to ride and expect everything to be so different, and to be blunt....it's just not. It's like riding a heavier mountain bike, but climbing on a road bike. I guess that's the best way to describe it. :-) They are FUN. WAY more fun than I expected them to be, and it's the same for all of my friends who have tried them, and most of us are enduro racers, and all mountain riders. Try one....it's worth it just to see what they're all about, so you can see how far out in left field so many people are when they talk about them.

Its because the RM motor uses an idler wheel, and that the noise you can hear - the system they use is proprietary to RM, not other manufacturer uses that motor. The Brose motor in the Specilized uses an internal bet drive, which is what makes is so quiet, to the extent you can hear it. The Shimano and Bosch motors are a bit louder than the Brose.
