I use the nasal pilow type, and is a gane changer, specially when you have beard, since a full face mask tends to leak. Keep the good info coming uncle Nicko!

Nick you are so right I just about gave up on using my CPAP machine because of the full mask I was wearing - I felt claustrophobic the mask was leaking I hated the cold air - a friend who also has sleep apnea referred me to his respiratory sleep physiotherapist and she was nothing short of brilliant fitted me with the nasal pillow mask I told her I was a mouth breather she responded not for too much longer :) she gave me a chin strap in case I needed it but urged me to use the mask without it - 2nd night I was breathing through my nose it has made all the difference in me actually being compliant and using my CPAP - she reviewed my sleep study results my oxygen levels drop to 60% during my rem sleep for close to 2 hours she let me know just how dangerous this was with apneas of 59 per hour during rem - she also tweaked the pressure levels on my machine turned off the ramp and gave me a warm air hose it has made all the difference to my comfort levels. There are so many moving pieces and nuances to CPAP therapy one has to be patient and also seek out support and guidance from those in the know like yourself - I’m down to 0.8 events per hour - thanks for your videos mate

Nobody seems to take into account the great numbers of people who have deviated septums and simply can not draw enough oxygen through their noses to be comfortable.

i'm new to cpap, using the nasalpillow device i find that when i have it on and the wife asks a question for a response i have to take it off as it basically forces my mouth closed. not sure if its the norm but thats what i find.

This. My son has a deviated septum and can barely breathe through it. He uses a nasal spray and the stick on nasal strips every night trying to get some nose breathing.

It took me 2 nights, best thing I ever did, best of all the leaks have disappeared and my pressure has fallen by about 4 cm's. I now only use a full face mash when I have a flu and the nose is blocked

I use the Resmed N20 (was using the Resmed swift fx nano (miss that mask desperately as I can't find any of the small size cushions online..... anywhere). I've never been a mouth breather as since I started out with cpap therapy (circa 2011) I have been using an adult sized pacifier. Any time I have nasal congestion I use a medicated nasal inhaler with levmetaphetamine and use it a few times during the night and make sure to tie a length of elastic cording through the holes or handle of the pacifier or use a bit of tape at the corners of the pacifier to secure it to my face. Of course, I have been using a pacifier of some sort for nearly my whole life (at least since I can remember) because I'm on the Autism spectrum and sucking on a pacifier has always been the way I self soothe and it provides me an outlet for stimming (I'm quite a "mouthy" stimmer and have been my whole life and pens, pencils, chewy toys/necklaces, my thumbs/fingers and of course pacifiers have been my preferred source of stim stimulus/soothing objects for me). When I was followed by a dentist (when I still had teeth up until I opted to have them all pulled) I was told by the dentist that when a person sucks their thumbs or uses a proper fitting pacifier for their mouth size, the tongue will always find its way to press itself firmly to the roof of their mouth to create suction and with the tongue in this position, it prevents a surprising amount of soft tissue from obstructing an individuals airway.

I know when I speak to patients I mention their mouth breathing may be just their sleep apnoea if they have no underlying issues that generally make all nasal breathing an issue. I also mention that initially they might find the nasal pillows a bit much initially but we can always revisit them later once they have had some exposure to cpap in general. So I like to keep it open unless there is an obvious reason and say we can try and keep a close eye initially to see how things go if they want. I never try and force a fullface.

I have a deviated septum also because I don't have a humidifier The air is too cold to be breathing through my nose It's a bit like when you go for a brisk walk I try to learn to breathe through my nose but after a while it's a bit too much

What if you have a deviated septum and lots of congestion in the nose when putting on the mask. Plus, my jaw recedes and things, my mouth opens naturally when sleeping. How do patients like me overcome these challenges?

Hi , I tell PTs this. Start off with a pillow or nasal mask. However, a good number of them complain about the amount of pressure pushing through their nasal airway, telling me, " I feel like my brains are going to be blown out." Any suggestions on what I could tell them other than it will take time to adjust? Thanks in advance .

I used ramping to start, where the air pressure builds gradually until it’s at the right amount. It took me ages to get used to cpap, but I gave myself a good talking to and now it is so natural for me. Good luck with your journey

I kind of of like my full face mask at this time bcuz it reminds me to remember to breathe through my nose. I still need a lot of practice breathing through my nose.

But how do you practice? Like throughout the day or just at night? I tried a chin strap for example, and it didn’t work for me. I naturally wanted to breathe through my teeth lol. Love your channel! From Idaho, USA.

practice keeping your tongue held against the top of your mouth, not against your teeth though but right up in the hollow of the top of your mouth.

I am not a mouth breather, but I expel air through my flippy lips and I weld my mouth together. I use tape, but I eventually loosen this in about 4 to 6 hours. Use a F30i with tape and So I am breathing through my nose. I tried a pillow mask for about 2 months. I do wish I could use a pillow. Any ideas on how to keep the tape from blowing off from inside pressure?
