The spoon bit indeed has a special meaning in Korea: “A golden spoon refers to those born to a chaebol or very rich family, a silver spoon to those born to a relatively well-off or middle-class family, and lastly a dirt spoon to those born to a low-income family.” They also have a song titled "Silver Spoon" (뱁새; also known as "Baepsae" or "Crow-Tit") that delve deeper into the subject.

Similarly to English, a person who is spoon-fed can be referred to as a person who is spoiled or perhaps useless. The difference I see is that the material of the spoon represents the status, thus, more expensive material equals higher income families. Nonetheless, both shows how one is raised.

Live as you, enjoy your youth. It's ok to make mistakes, it's ok to lose...that's what I personally think Suga means with the I'll forgive you line. I'll forgive your mistakes, your flaws, and your losses as you live a fiery youth.
@geniusstudio9563 Жыл бұрын
My interpretation of the ‘I forgive you’ line is that even if the world is harsh on the youth, including the older generations (spoon hierarchy) or the haters, BTS will forgive us for living unapologetically as ourselves. Weirdness and flaws included. These older albums are so good! Hope you can do more and thank you for cheering up my Monday after a rough day at work!

Jin once said that Fire was for him their most meaningful song. For me it is a song celebrating youth, energy that should not be killed by serious adult life. It’s the essence of what BTS stands for - for me.
@rmsmoonchild722 Жыл бұрын
They were a voice for the lost youth which was much needed at that time. But their very fierce stance on these issues were quite shocking to many, especially coming from an “idol” group. BTS took a lot of risks that have clearly paid off now, but it should never be underestimated that they were a huge factor in opening the doors for others. Idol groups now have much more freedom than they used to and that’s a lot down to BTS bringing global attention and taking the brunt of the criticism and the hate. They were like a shield (bulletproof 😉) But with the different cultures especially it’s another reality there for young people. BTS helped give them a much needed voice in desperate times through their music and especially this youth series. Thank you for this vid 💜

Thank you for listening to BTS.. back in those days, the Korean music industry (and media) was dominated by 3 big companies and BTS being from a small company, they were the underdogs. From the first scene of this mv, BTS was outside of the fence but Suga got in and set the person in black (depicting the Korean music industry) on FIRE cos BTS was ready to burn it all up and the rest is history! I love BTS and am so proud to by an ARMY! looking forward to your next BTS reactions :)

A lot of people don't realise either that at this time, even though they had a lot of people paying attention, they were still very much underdogs and the company were still on the fence with their future. A lot of these mvs from 2015/16 were done on a serious budget and had their friends or the staff members (a literal hand full of people who grew up with them) step in as extras. You can see such a difference from the HYYH mvs to the Love Yourself series and beyond. But even so, these songs are still so timeless. Yes they are more focussed on choreo than visuals for those very reasons but there are still so many Easter eggs and clues hidden in. They've always been 10 steps ahead and these will never get old. Love ya Knox, hope you get to see the comments about all the hidden meanings. BTS are so under-appreciated in the story-telling game.

The catching the guy on fire is a recreation of a famous album cover of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. Suga wrote this & so fire has become his element in BTS hagiography.

Thank you Knox!! So happy to see more BTS :) Oh this is actually a lot deeper than it seems on the surface (then again isn't that BTS in a nutshell haha). There are some socio-political undertones here to the economic landscape at that time and the way the youth are treated. This song links with themes from Baepsae and continues through their entire youth album series (the HYYH series and also the time of the BU!) I hope one day you get the chance to see how much more elevated their songs are when taken in context of their albums. I love your breakdowns so much and really appreciate you being such an ally always for us and BTS!

I don’t know if anyone has ever told you but Seo Taiji are a legendary 90s Korean group and they were very fuck the system. They did a concert in 2017 with BTS and passed the torch to them as the next generation leaders for the youth. They’ve always sort of been defenders of the younger generation and it’s weaves into all of their stuff. Even from their very first song No More Dream. And you have the theme of youth and friendship, love and loss in the BU etc. Its all really fucking cool!!

Don't know if you have idiom in English "burn the youth" when you don't grind a lot and study, enjoying parties and action instead. Also! Song is fire, so they wear party clothing also literally partying in the video burning the youth like teenagers. I guess it fits "it's ok to be loser" and "we live your success life" Literally "It could be you but you decided to burn your youth while we're grinding our path to the top." and the last line "I'll forgive you" so they are not salty toxic rapers, they say its ok to let yourself some relax and fire. Just don't fully commit so you are burning to nothing. At least it's what I've got thinking about their philosophy and popular idioms P.S. Note: this song is literally fire 🔥 Thats why a stranger is burning when he got handshake with suga (suga wearing headphones fires him with the start of this song) Thats a multiplay on one word "fire", so impressive and have a lot of symbolism

Ah I’ve been hoping you’d go back and finish the title songs!! Thank you 😊 Fire is actually quite the anti-establishment song and could be paired with Dope. The spoon lines are them basically saying ‘why are you calling us a dirty spoon, we’re human too’ because they had no power or influence. Then in Dope they talk more about what the younger generation has had to give up as a result of societal expectations and the older generations. Such an anthem. I had this on all the time when it came out 😆

Quite a few are hidden in the visuals and it does have a political undertone to it that is more obvious as a fluent Korean speaker or knowing the context of the albums. In English there's the saying "born with a silver spoon in one's mouth" to refer to someone who's privileged. In Korean there's also an expression about a "dirt spoon" someone who is poor and as such bound to have a less fortunate future. So when BTS says I'm just a human not a spoon, they call for social justice, to be regarded as human and treated humanely regardless of their background, monetary possessions. They have a few songs directly relating to this sentiment, like Bapsae ("Crow tit" literal transplation, but the song is also referred to as "Silver Spoon"), N.O. and I feel to some extent Ddang! I just found this explanation from an Army online about the "Spoon Class Theory" The silver spoon has become a symbol of the worsening social conflict or rather division in the hierarchical country South Korea. This phenomenon is widely talked about in online communities, in other words it became a newly coined word that is frequently used among the younger generations. It is referred to as "the spoon class theory". According to this viral concept, wealth and social status is ranked into four groups of spoons, namely gold (금), silver (은), bronze (동) and soil/dirt (흙). Each spoon equaling a different wealth or social status. This idea of the silver spoon that is mentioned in the song "Baepsae", does come from the same western idea of being born with a silver spoon in your mouth. The spoon class theory categorizes Koreans into four main classes. First are the golden spoons. They characterize the wealthiest and most privileged citizens of South Korea. All those who are born from prestigious and affluent families. Therefore, they are preoccupying the most dominant and prominent position within this class structure. About 0.1% of the population embodies this economic status. The silver spoon represents a relatively wealthy family with $1-$2 million in assets. They are in the top 3% of the population and better off than any other lower class. The bronze spoon symbolizes 7.5% of the population with an annual salary of $50 -$80,000, so in other words the upper-middle class, the ones from the average, common background. The soil/dirt spoon signifies the rest of the population. These are low income working class families that are unable to enjoy certain luxuries due to their financially disadvantaged situation. They are forced to confront every hardship and suffer on their own. “To put it another way, the spoon theory sheds light on the fact that the younger generation of South Korea is, ironically, forced through this vicious competitive system out of no reason at all, since advancement within this market system is hopelessly impossible”, as stated by a Korean blogger. Now, BAEPSAE is a Korean bird, called Crow tit in English. There is a common idiom/ saying : "the crow tit will break it's legs trying to walk like a stork". Other translations include try-hard and poser. Basically trying to be something that your not. BTS refers to themselves as baepsae because they are not part of a big name entertainment company and they are still becoming international idol stars. They are proud to be baepsae. Linking it to “Silver Spoon"… as I have mentioned, the younger generation is forced to live in this competitive system of “spoon rankings”… and they are regarded as lower class when they started, since they did not come from the elite Big 3. But they are proud to be called “Baepsae”, especially now that they have proven the haters are VERY wrong about them.
@김유정78 ай бұрын
6:41 or back to the lyrics 6:23, Your right, the translations are wrong, its actually "It's ok to just live because we're still young Who do you think you are to say otherwise Stop comparing, I'm only human, so what"
