I'm super late to this party - sorry! I didn't get a notification and was just doing a random chack to see if you were back when I saw it! Welcome back! I'm so glad you're feeling better. I hope the return to research treats you kindly and look forward to more of your cheery and informative videos!

I know this is a week or so late but I'm so glad you're back and you're in a better place now. I'm starting my PhD in English Lit in October, also unfunded and full time, so it's really helpful to have someone else in the same position!

Lucy, you seem SO WELL!!! I love your energy in this video, well done on successfully taking time for you. I hope you enjoy delving back into the literature and back into your project. Funnily enough, I have a similar thesis issue. My musicological project could go down a literature and critical route or a data route, and now I’m realising I’m going to have to pick one to prioritise. Looking forward to more of your content! Welcome back!

Hi Lucy! I am really happy for you that you are returning to your PhD and feeling great. I was wondering if you would ever do a video about or if you do another Q&A could you talk about the modules you study in your first year as a PhD? As well as maybe the vacation / weeks off you are entitled to as a full time phd student. I am coming to do a phd at birmingham in September and keep hearing about these modules you take in first year which is scaring me as I thought I was over formal assessments 😂

Hey! I'm not sure when I'll next do a Q&A so wanted to answer here so you would have the information before you start in September :) So in the UK, it isn't typical or mandatory to take modules as part of your PhD programme - I audited two modules in my first year after discussing it with my supervisors as a way to fill gaps in my knowledge. as I'd never been formally taught romance scholarship. However, when you audit a module you don't do the formal assessments, you just do the weekly reading and go to the lectures/seminars. Of course, it might vary slightly depending on your PhD but it isn't the norm for most PhD courses in the UK! In terms of vacation time at UoB (and most other UK unis), you'll get 6 weeks holiday from your PhD each year - you won't need to formally book them off but usually, you discuss what days/weeks you are planning to take off with your supervisor. Hope that answers your questions!
