My cousin had an "export model" 1.5 liter Lada with 5 speed transmission and sport bucket seats in Hungary. He purchased it in 1985 and drove it for 320,000 KM or 200,000 miles. It basically rusted apart, however the engine still ran when he sold it in 2010. He used the car EVERY day for 25 years. I don't give a shit what anyone says, these cars/engines were made WELL.

These cars were not so slow, since the latest models had 84 HP for 800 kg which is quite sporty. And the engines loved to rev, natural with italian parents. I also love the shape consisting of three boxes. Very classic, very practical and timeless.

I had a Lada I used to thrash, ruined the cams by over-revving it. One day I was racing to work and getting overtaken on straights but doing the BMW's in the roundabouts - you have nothing to lose in a Lada. Pushed hard on a few roundabouts and then every time I steered to the left I heard a clicking noise. When I got to work we all had a look to try and work out what was happening. Finally took off the hubcaps and the front left wheel had cracked between the wheel nuts. It turns out the wheels are not hardened (like the cams) and made for horse carts. Finally sold it to a dealer that was exporting Ladas back to Russia. Got it up to 108mph slipstreaming another non Lada.

Kamui Believe it or not, the 2101 was a pretty good sedan compared to 70s standards. It was licensed after Fiat 124 (European Car of the Year 1967! - and SEAT licensed it too) and even had several upgrades and improvements over that one. So, it was a good car. Sure, 40 years later it looks funny...
@PeterM09117 жыл бұрын
Just for the record. It was licenced after the Fiat 124 and not the 125. The Жигули́/ Zhiguli/ VA3 2101 was different in the engine and brakes mostly and the trackwidth, also ride height was increased. It got the newer, yet Fiat licenced OHC engine (the 124 was OHV) and instead of diskbrakes all round, the Zhiguli was built with drums at the rear, but it was dual-circuit brake system (not single as in the 124) The 125 "copy" was built in Poland the Polski Fiat/ FSO 125p.
@goclunker7 жыл бұрын
Peter M 125 is not a copy either. Its also a fiat licensed car. Both the 124 and 125 were fiat models, 125 having more room, and being slightly larger in trunk space....

Boris, you're always a laugh. A Lada..!!.. I rented a Lada Samara a very, very, very long time ago. It was a new car and we had it for 10 days. When we returned it to the hire car company it weighed about 15 kg less than when we started. Many things had fallen off it. I kept some of the bits in a potato sack and handed them in to the lady behind the car return desk... There were door handles, window winders, radio antenna, boot (trunk) lid lock and barrel, an entire headlight assembly, the mirror, glove-box lid, a windscreen wiper arm, etc, etc, etc... It was incredible, but we still had a lot of fun in that car. Our kids (who are now adults) had a contest going as to what might fall off on any particular day...

The deal with (ex)eastern-bloc cars like Lada or FSO was the non existent quality control. So it's hit and miss with them. You could get an immaculate example that would go 400,000+km no problems or you could get something like you described, built by random drunks on a Friday night shift in the worst years of their car production...

I had a Lada 1200S - if I touched the brakes at 40mph it would go into an un-recoverable spin. Also the brakes would apply themselves at 60mph with no warning to me or anyone behind me. It eventually got T-boned by an MG - I drove away with the whole left side stoved in, the MG went home on a trailer.

Lada produced the best cars ever. Nothing proves it better, than the legendary Ayrton Senna's interesting wish before the first Hungarian Grand Prix (the first F1 GP East to the iron curtain) in 1986. He wanted to drive around the track with a vehicle that every Hungarian drive with every day. So they gave him a Lada and he pushed it for a full lap around the circuit. :D
