It's both. The show is gorgeous and lovely and wholesome, but with a constant undertone of nostalgia. It's about remembering great moments that you often didn't appreciate at the time, grieving missed chances, and learning from those past events so you don't miss the present.

I'n my 42 years on this planet I've been blessed to witness such great beauty: I've performed a concert inside the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. I've awoken to a misty sunrise over the Swiss Alps. I've hiked an uncharted trail through the Maui rainforest to watch the sun set over a secret waterfall cove. The things "Frieren" mKes me feel surpass all of these... and it's not even close!!

19:09 Many of the character names are German words btw: -"Frieren" means "(somebody is) freezing" -"Fern" means "far away" -"Himmel" means "sky/heaven" -"Heiter" means "joyful" -"Eisen" means "iron" So basically their names reflect their personality.

As an adult male, I can tell you there will be even more opportunities to 'cut some onions', along with one of the coldest lines ever delivered in a show. This is a great, great story-driven show. Don't worry about your emotions, you're in the right spot with them.
@TheTorment

True! Honestly, when I first started watching Frieren I was absolutely amazed that a show that is this slow paced, reflective, meandering with its story and for the whole beginning almost devoid of any action scenes (it literally skips fight scenes that would be the main course in your usual anime) has managed to get this much attention from the mainstream audience... and I'm very happy about it. Also, what I love is that Frieren does make you cry, but never out of sadness - it's always out of empathy or from acts and thoughts that feel heartwarming and moving. It never makes you feel down or depressed (even just for emotional impact in the moment), it just softly touches the gentler, kinder and more caring side of us, and that's what makes it beautiful and gives the viewer this positively melancholic and cathartic feeling that doesn't require any buildup at all (like having to know the characters for multiple seasons to care about them)

Something i love about this show is how the people sees Himmel as this Heroic old figure, even as a myth, but Frieren sees him as an idiotic obsessed with his beauty guy, but with a pure heart at the same time, she's the anchor to earth of people remembering Himmel, and i love that so much ❤

@@ANunes06 Absolutely masterclass. We are actually being told two stories in parallel. The thing that always makes me tear up is 15:10. First, the way she stands over the flowers and speaks softly, as if she's whispering directly to Himmel right beside her, followed by the way she so slowly, lightly, & lovingly caresses the flower, as if to show her own love, respect, and appreciation to Himmel's personal treasure that he's secretly sharing with her. I just die inside. Also, most English speakers will pronounce "Himmel" as "him-ull" (like "full"), even though a Japanese speaker would do it more like "hee-meh-ru".

I'm very fond of Frieren reaction videos and I'm solidly enjoying your start to this journey. One notable catch is reacting to the subtle Fern moment at 7:56. That silent moment of Fern in the kitchen quietly reacting to what she's overhearing from Heiter and Frieren's conversation gets me every time. It is such a tiny little scene with the character not even facing our way, but I find it such a beautiful insightful glimpse into Fern's inner world. It seems to slip by in most of the reactions videos I've watched, so compliments to you there. Looking forward to watching along with you through the whole series.

100%. Nobody ever sees that and I don't even really blame them. Anime very rarely includes that level of subtlety, but this show is wonderful for nuance. There's a surprising amount of subtext in the writing itself as well. The audience isn't handed every morsel of information on a silver platter.

i think its kinda funny.. how few reactors get that Heiter tricked Frieren the moment he asked her to teach Fern... most people think 1. Imortality.. thats necromancy.. he must be evil.. or 2. he whants to live longer for Fern or himself.... (when people think 1. most say afterwards its because they watched to many animes with evil plots^^) Also.. dont worry about crying... i watched it so many times now... i almost always cry when Himmel gets shown... hes the "Paladin" (speaking of my D&D background) that everyone whants in his Group.. and he is still more then perfekt. Btw.. the Names have meaning... those are German names.. and they kinda discribe the personalities.. Heiter=Joyfull. Frieren=freeze or be cold cold, Fern=distance, Eisen=Iron, Stark=Strong.. and Himmel=Sky or Heaven (german words are mostly ambiguous)... Himmel is like the good guy who is in heaven or represents that.. also hes like the sky towering above everything. You aren't the only one. I cry every episode as well. And often times I don't know why. As far as her motivations into the decisions she makes to collect spells... She's still learning her own motivations in relation to the people around her because she doesn't understand people.... But she's hinted already at the fact that she collects spells because Himmel liked her spells, it could be literally that simple. I just don't think she realizes that's the reason. But I also think she's obsessive about collecting spells because in it's own way, as long as she does, Himmel is still around even if only in memory. Which I wonder now if part of the tragedy of immortality is eventually the memories of the people you knew and loved dies as well, and in that sense those people die twice for her.

I watched this show when it was released. My provider dropped episodes 1 through 4 at once . Made it way to easy to get hooked . You are in for a great ride through the episodes ,and every episode just keeps getting better ( That is the only spoiler you are getting !! * insert big grin here * ) For me everyone got their parts right, the voice actors ,production staff artists doing the world building through images. Simply put it was amazing Better hang on , you are really going to enjoy this

Dont hold back the tears! This is a beautiful show and you should let yourself enjoy is to the fullest. With that you can truly feel how wonderful the character development and interactions are. There is very little that isnt purposefully done in this show. Almost everything has a deeper meaning to it so try to find them!

I have read the entire current manga, watched the anime in sub and dub, and watched a fair few reactors because I love this series so much. I think at the core of it, why we feel so strongly about Himmel, so fast, is because the series is really intentional and clever with how it uses time. In the first episode, it sets us up right away by throwing us at the end of the 10 year journey. Then BAM, immediate 50 year time skip in maybe the first 3 minutes. In your human lifespan, you're now experiencing vast amounts of time similarly to how Frieren might. Himmel dies. Suddenly, 10 years isn't nearly enough. To Frieren, and now also to US... it's a blink. Himmel was a great man and friend from everything we've heard. It's unfair that we didn't get enough time with him. This is where I think Frieren really hits the mark. Condense everything back into your own personal lifespan. Maybe you're 14, watching this as you first enter high school. Maybe you're 21, watching this as you contemplate what will happen after college. Maybe you're 35, realizing that the last decade felt more like 4 years. No matter what age you are, you probably have at most 70 years left... I certainly have less. So now, even in the context of your human life, 10 years with someone you love and cherish doesn't seem like that many. Frieren as a series trivializes human timescales, but then makes them meaningful to its Elven protagonist. She struggles to understand how such a small amount of time could have meant so much to her. By watching her come to terms with what HImmel and others meant to her, we are more or less compelled to do the same... and when we realize we only get a fraction of Frieren's time to know and love those around us, it hit us hard. You cry for Frieren's losses because they mirror your own -- whether they've happened yet or not.

A little fun fact that I like about this is that Himmels voice actor also voices Bakugo from My Hero Academia. It's such a personality contrast that it's almost impossible to picture.

This episode had several excellent examples of symbolism with Himmel as Sky. When Heiter fell, we saw the massive rain storm. Himmel was crying. When Heiter tells Fern about his lost friend in the flashback, the backdrop is a clear blue sky. When Frieren finds the Blue Moon Weed, she is framed against a beautiful sky, showing Himmel is with her and happy.

Regarding Himmel and Eisen almost getting beheaded, I think it's simply because they addressed the king using informal speech instead of super formal speech. Basically the Japanese equivalent of saying "you" instead of "Your Majesty", except that in Japanese using the wrong formality level is considered far more unforgivable than it is in English, especially when addressing a monarch or noble. I think it's interesting to note exactly what it is that makes Frieren cry in this episode, because it wasn't Heiter's death. She cried over his attempt to cut short his time with Fern instead of making as many memories as possible. If you think back to Episode 1, what she said at Himmel's burial suggested that her crying that time was also more about her failure to make more memories with Himmel while she could, rather than about his death specifically. Again, she didn't actually cry at his death or his funeral, as those random ladies in the crowd so rudely noted. And in this episode, when Frieren said she was searching for the flowers "for herself", you could also interpret that as her wanting to "complete" that memory of Himmel. Alongside time, memory is probably one of the biggest recurring themes in this show.

Yup, its mostly tear-jerker moments to this series. Always have a tissue box nearby 😅. Yeah, its odd to know on getting to know someone based on someone else's memories of him and thinking "that's right, he might be gone, but it also feels like I loss a great friend 🥺😞".
