Even more sad, it's likely Sam did that on purpose. He stayed up past Ellie sleeping and would have fallen asleep sitting up ( We already know he can sleep in odd positions by him not tucking into the bed when Henry asked him to fall asleep ) So he knew if he turned, to not face her.

I just realized something. Henry said he had never shot or killed anyone before. Even the gun he pointed at Joel and Ellie was an unloaded one, (he said he was bluffing). Meaning the first person he ever shot was Sam. With that context it makes even more sense why he shot himself afterwards

You're literally the only reactor who clocked the callback to Joel telling Ellie to squeeze through the hole in the wall in ep 4. It was such an elevated way to show us that their bond and understanding of each other grows exponentially by the day. Really love your reactions to this show. Even though you didn't play the game, your knowledge of how to tell visual stories in film shines a lot and adds another layer of enjoyment for us watching reactors. Great job! E1: Joel loses his humanity. E2: Joel doesn't deal with the loss of Tess. Cold AF. E3: Crossroads for Joel. Bill's story shows Joel's 2 paths- Loner or Protector. Joel starts to open up to Ellie. E4: Joel and Ellie really connect, Ellie loses a bit of her nievete, killing Bryan. E5: Joel fucking dad mode, Ellie doesn't deal with the loss of Henry/Sam. Cold AF (Joel E2 anyone?). While Joel is regaining some remblance of humanity because of Ellie, the world is taking it away from her. Also Bella's strangled whimper at Henry's death was perfection.
@V_4_Versace
@V_4_Versace Жыл бұрын
I think that E5 sentence needs a bit of editing on that Joel bit 🤭. Also, in the behind the episode part the director said that Ellie didn’t not deal with Sam and Henry’s death because she was turning cold or ignoring her feelings, they said it’s because she wants to get to the doctors as fast as possible to keep what happened to Sam from ever happening again. That’s why she wrote I’m sorry on his board, she really thought she could help him and she just wants to figure out how because right now she feels more helpless than ever. I think before she had a little bit of hope that she might be able to help Joel or anyone else they came across if they got infected, but now she knows that’s not the case so if she doesn’t figure out how to help people, she really might end up alone in the world.

I loved all of the moments that signify Joel and Ellie’s bond. From Ellie talking about Joel’s asshole voice to her clocking Joel’s pattern of saying no before eventually relenting, to the silent communication of trust between Joel and Ellie during the horde attack. And positioning Ellie as the “Joel” with her relationship with Sam was a nice touch. Someone depended on her and she couldn’t save them. And it ends with her just wanting to move on from it just like Joel. Honorable mention to Joel eyeing the bridge. That scene shows that Joel easily could have just left Ellie, Henry, and Sam, but he’s in too deep emotionally and couldn’t leave them. Brilliant writing. And Lamar Johnsonn and Keivonn Woodward deserve an Emmy. They had an instant, magnetic chemistry that got you immediately connected. Just a clear case of efficient and economic storytelling. Not a single minute was wasted to get you to care about the characters and setup future dynamics.

This episode is another reminder of how brutal and unforgiving this world is, regardless of who you are. Something as simple as running across a group of infected has catastrophic effects to deal with and even doing the right thing has consequences. It’s no wonder Joel closed his heart off in the first place. The quicker you get attached to someone, the more likely you are to lose them. But FORK, does it hurt EVERY TIME they make us fall in love with someone and then take them away.

Not to unnecessarily quibble, but Joel & Ellie are taking great pains not to run into groups of infected (or people) and especially mega-swarms like what flooded the St. Louis QZ -- because there is nothing simple about it. They're dangerous, strong, fast, resistant to damage & pain and incredibly single-minded. The only reason they haven't formally taken over is that they don't have the capacity to act collectively in a coordinated fashion and create and use machines.

I'd like to learn more about the young blond actress they got to play the child clicker. Her part was very well choreographed. No apologies are needed for crying. I cried too. I'm sure most did. I needed time to compose my feelings as well. I think this world needs more people like us rather than people that don't have those reactions. Otherwise... we lose. That split-second yelp/scream Ellie did just as Henry shot himself, that is when I lost it. Bella deserves an award just for her performance in this episode alone, There were so many times I literally wanted to give her a hug and comfort her. yet still she has her little 'Ellie' attitude.

I cried so much after Bill and Frank, maybe because it was a beautiful love story with a bittersweet end, but this just left me feeling empty. I keep thinking about what it would have been like if that scene had never happened and they all went together the rest of the journey, forming bonds and friendships. It really shows you how cold and cruel this apocalypse is for these characters, to experience so much loss and pain so quickly and then just have to move on. Enduring and surviving.

On the flip side, it shows exactly what happens if you can't endure and survive. "That shit's redundant" but it isn't. Sam couldn't survive, Henry couldn't endure. Frank couldn't survive, Bill couldn't endure. Sarah couldn't survive, but Joel managed to endure. But for how long?

Oof, bless you for appreciating the storytelling craft even while it's wrecking you emotionally. I've said elsewhere: one of the core ironies that this story plays with is the fact that human beings are actually VERY fast to care about one another, when there's even a shred of common humanity to be found. So the core tragedy isn't just that their world is so brutal and unpredictable: the tragedy is also that they (and we) aren't able to truly turn off their empathy and yearning for connection, despite the pain that comes with it.

Been waiting for days for Jacqui's take. Love her insights. Every time there's a protector-protectee pairing and something happens to one, all I can think of is Bill: "...and you... were my purpose." Joel makes the point in this episode that it's easier for Sam and Ellie because they don't have anyone depending on them, and then immediately Ellie has Sam depending on her. And now she's more like Joel than ever before- she's lost her protectee, and has to find her purpose again.

I just really wish this show had a little more chill to let us sit in the heartbreak and anguish for like 30 more seconds. It's the second time that they just cut to a new scene immediately afterwards. Stop cutting my grief short for fungus sakes! I know the show's world has no time for it, but it's MY grief!!

Been with you since the Ted Lasso reactions and I love seeing your channel blow up for a brilliant show based on one of my favorite games. And yeah. This was horrific. I don’t blame you for reacting that way. Even having played the game, knowing Sam and Henry’s fates didn’t make this hurt any less. Hell, I’m still recovering from Bill and Frank. 😢

Aw thank you so much! And yeah, this was a different emotional blow than Bill/Frank. I feel like with them it was a long, drawn out, emotional heartbreak, where Sam and Henry were sudden tragedies. They both hit hard, but in different ways. This show is just incredible.

Small easter egg, so far, with the exception of Henry, there seems to be some correlation between a foot or leg injury or something that is wrong with their legs and that indicating the person is going to die. Sarah, Joels daughter, foot injury Tess, foot injury Frank, couldnt make use of his legs Sam, bitten close to the foot

I think one of the things that I absolutely love about you is the raw emotion that you show. I very much like this show but I can't remember the last time I felt something like that. I got pretty jaded and cold after returning from war in Iraq several years ago. I feign emotions to appease people but honestly most times I feel absolutely nothing at all. I appreciate you more than you know and look forward to every video you put out.

I love seeing your reactions Jacqui! You’re very analytical and spot the little details, it’s really refreshing. I love both games, and they are doing a phenomenal job with this adaptation. It has really exceeded my expectations. What I love about The Last of Us is it’s character driven instead of action driven. Yes there’s action, but the people, the pain one goes through in this type of scenario is something to watch. Because of the writing and the acting it makes you feel for the characters, even if it’s just for one episode. It’s an incredible achievement. Incase you haven’t yet, there’s a podcast that accompanies this show hosted by Troy Baker, who voiced Joel in the game. They are interviews with Craig Maizin and Neil Druckman. They are insights into each of the episodes and they how they accomplished certain scenes. It’s pretty interesting. Looking forward to your next reaction!

This is why the 1st game is well appreciated by all the gamers out there, the story translates well to live action it builds tension but it also doesn't keep throwing it at you, it provides relief however short to let you take in what happened and act accordingly, the people behind the scenes of this series have made excellent choices to take advantage of the medium while simultaneously remaining true to the story and building on its foundation. Love the video and all the bits and pieces of commentary you add to make it even more interesting to watch, even though I know what's coming next in the story... every "set piece moment" still hits hard like the first time I played the game. I enjoy the fact that you also point out the way the directors/writers used elements to create the tension and intent of the show thru not only visually but thru the smart use of sound and music as well, helps to enjoy the episode even more. If you've managed to get thru that you can imagine how people felt playing this game the first time and you had control of the actual character of Joel and Ellie 😄and well there's a LOT more story to tell, looking forward to the next episode and your video reactions 😁

I loved Henry and Sam the moment I met them in the game (some key differences being that game Sam is not deaf and is much closer in age to Ellie, maybe a year or two younger) and when Sam ended up infected and Henry killed him and then himself, I had to stop playing the game for an hour to process everything. It was such a gut punch and it hurt so much to go through. It hurt even worse in this episode, and to an extent, it hurt me when episode 4 ended with the introduction of Henry and Sam, because that's when I found out they had aged Sam down and I knew IMMEDIATELY I was going to be an absolute wreck when that scene rolled around. And then in episode 5 with all the time we spent with Sam and Henry, I conned myself by thinking that maybe they'd change it, because I so badly wanted them to. I wanted this to be the version of the story where Sam and Henry live, they trek to Jackson with Joel and Ellie, they settle in and they get to live a safe and happy life, to the point where when Ellie rubbed her blood on Sam's bite mark, I thought, "oh, okay, cool, this will work and we're doing this" while still knowing it wouldn't go down that way. The fact that Craig and Neil have taken a story so many people are so familiar with and know beat for beat and they STILL wreck us with it will never cease to amaze me. Some fun facts to close out: The big infected is called a bloater and the way he ripped Perry's head off at the jaw is the same way you get killed by the bloater in the game if you get caught by one. It's probably been mentioned, but Perry is played by Jeffrey Pierce, who did the voice acting and motion capture for Tommy Miller in the games. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who did the voice and motion capture for Joel and Ellie in the games, will make extended cameos later on in the season. The underground settlement they stopped in had an easter egg drawing of "our protectors, Danny and Ish". In the game, you find notes around the settlement and learn that Ish was out to sea when the outbreak happened and after months of sailing, docked in the city and drove out the infected that were in parts of the sewers before settling in. He was safe but very lonely, and would only leave to scavenge and trade with a nearby family. When the family mentioned that they may have to leave the area, Ish offered them a spot in his settlement. It's implied that the reason they're no longer there is because someone accidentally left the door to the settlement open and they got ambushed by infected. And finally, a not-so-fun fact, but an emotional one: Sam asks Ellie if the person still exists inside an infected, and when we cut to the next day, Sam has his back to Ellie and is looking out the window, and Ellie calls out to him. Normally, this would alert an infected - but Sam is deaf, so he doesn't hear her, confirming that the person is still in there. 🙃

this is one of my favorite episodes so far, and it has A LOT of set up/forshadowing for future things. i also love that all the characters they lose along the way impart some message/lesson onto joel. Tess was "safe who you can save" essentially telling him, keep moving forward, dont give up now. bill was a lesson that, despite them both being jaded men, joel has the potential to have a fullfilling life if he just learns to LET LOVE IN. episode 4 is joel starting to do just that, letting ellie into his heart and caring for someone in a way he hasnt since he lost sara. and Henry, Henry is a warning. a warning to joel of what will happen if he loses ellie. because joel WILL NOT survive losing another daughter. he just cant. also no spoilers, but kathleens story/character us deliberate forshadowing to a future storyline in season 2, and having her juxtaposed against Henry (who is meant to parallel a worst case scenario for Joel) i just MUAW delicious poetic cinema. after season 2 id recommend coming back and watching this episode

Love to see your interpretation of the things we see on screen. The last of us is such a good, yet simple story; its not rocket science to see how the show’s cogs are and will be moving, yet the human element makes none of that “predictability” ever one dimensional. I was OBSESSED with this episode, as well as the series as a whole, but I don’t recall watching something as gut wrenching as it, at least not in a while. Im actually SUPER mad that i got spoiled one major plot point of the story by some other gamer reactors, so seeing you react to it, besides the quality of the reaction, you won’t spoil a bit for us, cuz, just like me, you didn’t play the game. Anyway, keep up the good work darling, see you next week and NEIL AND CRAIG YOU OWE ME MY THERAPY BILLS!!

This part of the game takes place in Pittsburgh and has no Kathleen - just generic baddies - so moving it to Kansas City and giving them an entire storyline as well as fleshing out Henry & Sam’s backstory is so great. Plus, Sam is not deaf in the game, which is another great change Druckmann/Mazin made. I know your schedule has to be crazy, but if you have time, there’s an official podcast companion for the show hosted by the voice of Joel in the game, Troy Baker, and he interviews Druckmann & Mazin about every episode. Definitely worth a listen if you want more background. 👍🏻 Loving these videos & your insight! 👍🏻

The sniper scene in the game is just great cuz as you're being fired at you have to choose either the left or right side of the street that leads up the house. either side is filled with hunters that come after you. you make your way through various homes and eventually get to the inside of the main house. the sniper is younger guy and is already waiting for you up there. Joel struggles and defeats him. from there you have to snipe other hunters that are trying to kill Henry, Sam and Ellie. you even have to snipe a tank. then come the infected and you must snipe them until a cut scene finally plays. the underground tunnels are a lot larger in the game. areas seen in those tunnels were condensed into one room for the tv show. there is also a backstory of a man named Ish that started the community that lived in those tunnels. the story is told through pages found through out the tunnels. there is only one drawing of ish down in the tunnels. you also do get chased by infected down there and certain point, Joel and Sam end up together while Ellie has to keep close to Henry. they get separated by a trapped door. at then when they are about to exit the tunnels they get attacked by a horde of infected. after this they go through a neighborhood, ellie reads some more puns and eventually they pop out on the street with the sniper house. it takes place during the day though. Also Sam is not deaf in the game. Their fates are the same though. The big infected guy is called a bloater. there is an alternate version of it called a shambler but they are usually found within watery areas. In the game the bloater makes his debut within a high school gym that Bill takes Joel and Ellie through. The three have to fight it. it's only weakness is fire but gunshot blasts help too. it also like to throw these bulb like sacs filled with spores. you breath those in and you'll get infected too. Ellie can actually breath these spores and nothing will happen to her. The virus is in her blood but the fungus is mutated. yet her blood can still turn others into monsters.
