Yeah, his overreation seems to be PTSD rather than a patriarchal attempt to dictate his daughter's life. It's refreshing to see a parent acknowledge that their child's rebellion was warranted.

@@VS-re1sr A mix of PTSD and believing he's saving her, and I like that it's easy to understand why he feels he's saving her. His friend died, and he's probably completely aware it could've been him - and he doesn't want the same thing to happen to Moana and for her to be the unlucky one that time.

As a Pacific Islander who grew up on Disney I absolutely bawled my eyes out in cinema watching my culture be represented on the big screen and done so well thanks to the many Polynesian talent involved in the process (special shout out to Te Vaka, a popular polynesian music group who provided their classics for this movie and absolutely hit home)! This movie made me so proud to be a Pacific Islander…. And I’m not Pacific Islander. 😜 In all seriousness yeah I see that. When this movie was new I had recently watched a documentary about ancient Pacific wayfinding. I could not get over how many actual navigation techniques (beyond the stars which everyone knows about) were used - temperature, weather, sea birds, currents in “We Know the Way”
@alicejones9360
@alicejones9360 Жыл бұрын
I first heard "We Know the Way" when I had been away from home (New Zealand) for 3 years and the harmonies in that song brought tears to my eyes and took me back home. I believe the languages used in the South Pacific are some of the most beautiful and underrated languages on Earth. Was bawling in the movie theatre when Moana sings her triumphant "I AM MOANA".

The giant crab, Tamatoa, was played by New Zealand actor Jemaine Clement, who’s best known as part of Flight of the Conchords, a comedy band-turned-HBO show in the late 2000’s. Lin-Manuel wrote this song specifically in the style of what he’d done with that group.

"Shiny" was definitely an homage to David Bowie and written by Miranda to be sung in that style. He wanted Jemaine Clement to sing it like Bowie. Clement is known for having a spot-on Bowie impression.

So glad you reacted to this! I am always intrigued to see how people respond to the aspects of the culture (I am from New Zealand and am of polynesian ancestry, Half maori half european) our music is often the strongest way to tell our ancestral stories, beyond telling the story through music we want to convey it in a spiritual sense too, i think you kind of tapped into that through the nuances and layers in each composition. Awesome!. Also funny enough Sina who plays Moana's mother is voiced by Nicole Scherzinger (former lead member of The Pussycat dolls) she has an incredible voice but wasn't given any songs in the film. The woman who voices Gramma Tala is Rachel House who was only 49 at the time of filming, she is also very hilarious in person!.

Fun Fact I do not see mentioned so far in comments: The chicken Heihei is actually voiced by Alan Tudyk, known for many prominent roles in movies and TV. Wash in Firefly/Serenity, Tucker in Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Wat in A Knight's Tale. But his most recognizable work is in voice acting, and he's heavily embedded in Disney projects. K-2SO in Star Wars: Rogue One, Sonny (main robot) in I, Robot, Alistair Krei in Big Hero 6, Duke Weaselton in Zootopia, Iago in the live action Aladdin movie, Tuk Tuk (the little armadillo) in Raya & The last Dragon, the Toucan in Encanto... And as he ironically comments in a BTS video of Moana himself, he's Juilliard trained, frequently being cast to act as animals xD

I cried twice in the theater at this movie. The first is when her Grandmother’s spirit in sting Ray form carried her over the reef, the second was when Moana says “they have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you.” To anyone who’s ever been violated and felt like their heart was stolen, that line means so much.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but Moana references a period of the Pacific Expansion that suddenly stopped for centuries before continuing. In the movie, this is the result of Maui stealing Te Fiti's Heart making the oceans too dangerous to cross. For a long time there was no logical explanation, though there may have been one found back in 2014.

I live in Hawaii, and when I first saw this in Hawaii, everyone in the audience clapped, and some cried at the end of the movie. Auli'i Cravalho was only 14 when she was cast as Moana, and is a great representative of Hawaii.... She is an executive producer on the live-action Moana soon to come out and also on Broadway in Cabaret with Adam Lambert. Moana 2 comes out next week and from the trailers I've seen, will be another great movie...

"Shiny" is the song that came out of left field and seemed like it didn't fit... but that you didn't know you needed until it happened. Also, MOANA is close to my heart and a lot of why is because of the music, especially "How Far I'll Go." It filled me with the courage enough to move out of the state I grew up in, away from all of the people I knew (including my abusive family) and start a new life somewhere that I'm much happier. I will always, always love this movie and its soundtrack.

All of Pacific Islands were found by voyaging and that's we have the Polynesian Triangle (NZ : Hawaii : Easter Islands) and french Polynesia at the center because it was the first step of the discovering : that's why it said Polynesian were from french Polynesia more precisely from Raiatea, the center of Polynesian culture. And if you know, Polynesians are represented as an giant octopus where the head is french Polynesia and his legs are the rest of polynesian islands.
