Exactly, but the thing is that Dua could ALWAYS sing. She always had a very beautiful, raw voice. She was smart using that long gap after Future Nostalgia to get her stage presence and dancing together, which I initially suspected and it paid off. But regardless, you shouldn't be able to just pick a nobody starting at DEAD ZERO and have them blow up like Cube girl. And what really gets me is that she doesn't even want or think that she should improve. I remember when people said the same thing about Megan. That all she did was twerk and the "Megan Knees" were getting old. She never said anything, but I did notice how in her videos after those critiques she's doing choreo, the composition of her music videos got more visually interesting and her outfits were fun while still being sexy. She still twerks, of course, but it isn't the only thing she can do.

Megan is not a 1 = 1 because because Megan blew up in the first place because of her demonstrating her skills with a ton of freestyles. People know she got it. The only ones who think otherwise only listened to one or two songs. But even in those songs, her pen is clever and her mic sounds nice. They just dismiss her because she's attractive, unashamed, and dances as she does. Anyone whose truly followed her already knows what she can do. But I'm glad for 'Hiss' because it's made some people take suggestions and go back and discover her. She's diverse AF yet people lie and say she's not. Raw talent is NOT hard to find. I sing myself and not to toot my own horn I’m amazing at it. I just don’t care for fame because I love my privacy and also I don’t care to be forced to partake in secks rituals, orgys and screwing producers to be able to elevate. It’s never just sales. They have to sleep their way through with hundreds people throughout their career. Church I go to some amazing voices as well. I also know plenty regular degular people and the homeless that have amazing voices or can actually rap and freestyle flawlessly. Talent is everywhere. They just aren’t “pretty” or “cool”enough.

I get so frustrated by these artists who don’t care at all about music and only want attention and money. They take eyes off the artists who DO care and put effort into their music. While subpar musicians are celebrated and receive widespread attention, the truly talented ones struggle year after year. One of my favorite bands has been around for a decade now and yet they are still obscure outside of their own sub genre. They work day jobs and bust their asses so they can keep doing what they do. It’s awful.

story as old as time: artists nowdays debut on tik tok and labels take them up to the top of the game immediately. While usually the path was: you have passion and show it: Beyonce was performing as a kid in a girl group in local competitions, Gaga was performing in night clubs, Taylor was performing in cafes all before getting discovered. Then came the developement deal with the label, which was meant to train you in all the aspects of being a pop star: singing, dancing, production of music, training on how to handle interviews etc… and ONLY AFTER ALL THOSE THINGS they had you debuting. And even then you’d debut and start as an opener for others stars before going on your own tours. Plus often the pop/rap stars that act all cocky are the ones who mostly lack something. Like you rarely see Beyoncé being cocky and bragging, same for Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry etc. They never had to tell you they were some of the great ones and always left their craft speak for them. And they are probably some of the last artists that actually care about their craft: the attention to detail, being that in the production, the vocals, the choice of instruments or beats, the storytelling, that’s what differentiates them. Like when you listen to someone who doesn’t care about the craft you can tell because at most you hear a very nice song, but when you listen to someone who actually cares you can feel that they want to deliver something more than a catchy/nice sounding song. You can feel and listen to their desire to express a part of themselves in the music and that’s because they spent years developing and working to get to where they are.

He has been the front runner for very mediocre music that doesn't push the genre forward at all, what if the "Drake Era" of music is over now and we can open the doors to so much fresh ideas with music. I know Drake will go on to make more music that will likely be successful but that's not the point, the point is we saw actual artistic music preserve and that might hopefully set a new standard for music moving forward, hopefully for a few years at least. here's hoping🤞

as a music producer myself, all your critiques are super valid!! something that i hate noticing is that people's music just lack so much soul recently. and that's not saying that oh my music is better or whatever, i absolutely have a lot of learning and growing to do cause if i was content with being at the level i am right now, i dont think i would be able to be called a competent music producer. passion is such an important thing in the music industry cause without that drive and fire inside you, you can really easily get burnt out and resentful of your art. it sucks to see so many people turning to music as a way to make a quick buck and completely ignore the fact that music is an art form, and any art form requires constant work to better your craft. as a person who has dedicated her entire life to music, feeling like so many people are just making music for the money and fame instead of making music for the love and fun of it sucks. music is there for self expression and hey, if your form of self expression is "i have so much money im so rich", then more power to you, but an entire discography of the same topic becomes stale and uninteresting the longer it goes on. 100% agree. the whole point of art is to express emotion directly from the soul. it takes hard work and perseverance to perfect and fine tune that sound and process. most artists nowadays do not have the tenacity to do so and labels aren’t helping by incentivizing looks and clout over genuine talent and hard work. I noticed that I particularly enjoy music with “soul” in it over anything else. music that inspires me and touches my core. music that is so powerful, it’s somehow able to transfer the emotions of the artist onto myself. that is true music imo.

I also agree that the lack of quality for the music can be attributed to the laziness of the industry and producers. Sadly, I don’t believe these low quality artists are going anywhere because they associate with big names.
@petereta46475 ай бұрын
I think we as consumers lack accountability because most of the time we’re looking for instant gratification where if we can get a quick laugh out of it, it’s automatically good. We don’t even have the time nor energy to dissect lyrics that we actually resonate with.
@CamrynSuzanne5 ай бұрын
Absolutely and in turn we end up in the situation time after time
@suncrestt48394 ай бұрын
exactly. if we want to stop seeing this mediocrity, we have to stop giving them attention point blank. even if it’s negative, we can’t give them any reaction bc views are views and listens are listens. i find that a lot of plants like ice spice tend to be inflammatory purposefully in order to get even more people talking about them. it’s easier to piss people off than make them happy. ragebait is everywhere nowadays sadly.
@glistening71784 ай бұрын
"We don’t even have the time nor energy to dissect lyrics that we actually resonate with." THIS!!! But there's communities and spaces where lyricism doesn matter and amazing lyrics are praised (because you know...media literacy is a thing over there). I'm just trying to find them.

ice spice is one of the first people in a loong while to have a physically distinct image from other artists, like you can easily spot her out in a crowd of people because of her orange hair - she stands out, something alot of artists don’t do right now. HOWEVER her songs are absolute dog. Imagine if she had the full package? she’d be unstoppable.
@CamrynSuzanne5 ай бұрын
Yeah, ice spice definitely has the image and she worked really well with Main culture and Stan Twitter. I think she got very lucky and it worked but I agree the music just doesn’t match.

i liked dua when she first started releasing music, but how dramatic her improvement was during the release of future nostalgia made me a massive fan of her, it's honestly inspiring to see how she took such brutal criticism, though funny, and levelled up her entire artistry

😂😂😂😂😂 preach, Latto been rapping her whole life ice spice flat out said she rapping casually since late high school.💀😭I gotta say though as a Nicki fan it blew my mind she’s beefing with latto, when latto is essentially the 20 year old nicki. Like girl is a barb. How the Barb inventor not have her mini me on a track. Latto has QUALITY BARS😂💀😭 make it make sense

@noahme4eva5 ай бұрын
They were beefing because artists like ice and latte gassed themselves up. Latto begged for a feature, Nicki denied, and then they beefed. I think if latto didn’t get so but hurt over something that happens often in the industry, rap would look different today.

I think social media has given us a glimpse into the lives of the celebrity and the magic has been lost. Also, EVERYTHING nowadays is fast! Fast food. Fast fashion. And the celebrity/influencer worlds have become fast paced as well. It seems someone can get famous seemingly overnight and lose it all just as fast. I don't remember that happening before like it does now.

Yes fast is absolutely the word to describe every aspect of our society!

i think that actually focusing on consumer critique is the key to growing to the next level. artists like taylor swift knew that, and are continuously growing their market as a result

A little soul-crushing in the form of a reality check critique of an artist who has crawled up their own butt to sniff their own flatulence is never misplaced, nor wasted effort. Indeed, it can do a lot of good.

What really gets me with this whole Latto vs Ice Spice thing is they will say Latto is boring and have no personality but Ice has a great personality? In my opinion when it comes to watching their interviews, or tiktoks, IG vids etc Latto seems like a really fun girl with a fun personality compared to Ice

@@CamrynSuzanneThe only reason I don't FW Latto is because of colorist stuff she said, especially to someone who was supposed to be her friend. And her original name was ignorant AF. So, I don't trust her yet. Otherwise, I'd give her a chance.

@@LadyAstarionAncunin I've heard people say they stopped messing with Latto because of the colorist stuff. Fans are hard to come by these days so losing any amount of support can be damaging. My sister was a whole Cardi B fan, we couldn't even bring up Nicki in her house without being cussed out 😅 But when she found out what Cardi said regarding someone's dead child she stopped playing all of her music. Things like this matter to fans.

I was dog piled for saying Ice Spice was a terrible performer- people making excuses about how she “just came out” and “she’ll get better with time”. I absolutely blame the consumers and general public for this issue. Prior to social media there were agents and recruiters out on the ground searching for real talent. These were people in the music industry for numbers of years, with an understanding of entertainment, artist development, and real musicianship. Fast forward to now, where those middlemen have been cut out. Now the industry just has to pluck whoever has the most followers. Mediocrity is excused by Gen Z and yes imma call Gen Z out cause that’s who’s supporting most of these artist. Ice may get better with time, but why is it okay to have something be marketed to you that’s not had time to be developed?? I’m not spending my money on someone who’s a bad artist and performer. And that shouldn’t be acceptable to this generation. The bar is so low. I feel like we haven’t seen a real superstar come on the scene is so long people forgot what it meant to be entertained by a real talent. Corporations respond to the needs and desires of the consumers, so if people are eating this crap up, there’s no incentive to shift the product
@CamrynSuzanne5 ай бұрын
Yeppp, i blame myself bc i was someone unnecessarily defending the mediocrity 🤦🏾♀️ and that contributed to her getting as big as she is. Foresure, we look at the labels and say the industry where half the time they are just giving us what we “want” and what we’re responding to
@Sofiaode185 ай бұрын
You nailed it. Before Doja Cat became constantly embarrassing online I thought she was gonna be a superstar. She produced genuinely creative songs, good enough singing, and good dancing. But she wasn’t media trained at all and her management never felt the need to educate her. As far as they’re concerned as long as she’s raking in followers she can be embarrassing online.

this has honestly been on my mind for a while now. all ice spice songs sound the EXACT SAME, just a generic drill beat with some elementary grade ryhmes and an almost non-exisistent flow, she does not need to be beefing with people outside her talent bracket. i dont how she has fans but i guess a goofy haircut warrants icon status these days. and its crazy because i liked ice in the beginning, like her music wasn't that good but she seemed humble and like a vibe, but her recent actions have been really weird and she needs to be told that her music really isnt that good and most people see her as a joke or another viral meme/gag.
