Protip for future projects like this: Fill the pommel with wax or casting resin before you engrave and inlay the gold. It will keep the deformation from happening and you can just melt it out after.

Yeah, not something you would normally do unless you know that the wall thickness is almost zero, which he didnt know. A starting protip would be to check the wall thickness first maybe:)

@@garremannen coming from a jewelry making point of view, this is why you keep a bowl of pitch laying around. If it's flat and you plan to chase or raise, you heat up the pitch and jam your piece into it and let it harden. If it's hollow and I plan on hammering away at it, I'll always assume deformation is a possibility and fill it with pitch before doing anything else to avoid this exact thing from happening. Same thing applies to putting severe bends in thin silver tubing. Backfill it with wax to give support so it doesn't kink/collapse in the bend, then heat to remove the filler. 😁

I think it was Hank Green that said "Failure IS progress." (Nerdfighters, feel free to correct me with the actual quote.) It's a necessary part of the creation process... And I obviously hate it. There's a point in EVERYTHING I make where I look at what I've got, and compare it with all the time, energy, and resources that went in to it, and it seems stupid and pointless to continue on with it. I'm doing my best to remember that this is something that _everybody_ goes through, and surely happened at least once in the creation of every single work that ever inspired me to make things in the first place - you just never see that part. Take a break, walk away from it, but finish it out - we'll all be glad you did.

Hey Alec, man there are some days, right? But what I found is the most beautiful things of fine craftsmanship is in the asymmetry and tiny imperfections. The beauty is in the love and dedication to make something amazing, not in the object itself. You want perfect or precision just get a 5 axis cnc machine and be done with it. That’s why we like things made by hand. It means someone cared enough to sacrifice their time for a worthy or lofty pursuit. Keep on keeping on. One of my favorite possessions is a massive denim quilt I got as a wedding gift. It’s heavy, not all that attractive, but the time, pain and effort this little old lady went to make a quilt just for us to have for our wedding was the real gift, and the quilt is just a reminder of the real gift.

I know the feeling. I'll share my most notable experience. I managed to make a nice (though short) arming sword blade with a leaf spring, harbor freight anvil, 4x36, and 4.5 inch angle grinder. I tried to heat treat it over and over again, but I could never get an even heat. It was just barely too long for my whitlox forge. It ended up being badly bent and oxidized so thin that it was irreparable. To add too it, silly me, after the rough grind I had already rough shaped the guard and pommel and acquired the stock for the grip.
