Looks like you and Julia had a good time. I just did my Commercial ASES at Jack Brown’s in Fl. They recommended FAA approved life vests instead of Coast Guard ones. The FAA life vests have a lanyard to pull while the Coast guard ones inflate as soon as they are in contact with the water. In some planes if you had to ditch and the vests self inflated as the CG vest would, you might not get out of the plane. See ya at Cherokees to OSH this year?

I know this was like 11 months ago but, as a pilot, you’re still reliving the thrill. Right!? I just took two buddies to Bahamas. We flew commercial into Florida and rented a 182 there. All the planning, i empathized with your post. Like you said, the sense of accomplishment you got. Exactly! It’s hard for non-pilots to totally get it but this was such a big life moment when we touched down in Exuma. Loved your video.

Congratulations on you Anniversary and in checking off a bucket list item!!! Great video! Looking forward to the next installment!!! I had planned to make this exact same trip back in November but had to cancel for the second straight year due to weather. I fly VFR so I have to make a decision a week in advance in order to cancel the airbnb without loosing money. I'd be interested in knowing how you handled ground transportation. The cheapest I could find was $80 a day which was more than the airbnb for the week. Maybe I should leave this as a dream of mine. Too many logistical issues.
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno Жыл бұрын
Thank you Manuel! You made the right choice to cancel the trip if you weren't comfortable with the weather. I've done it many times, and I applaud your regard to safety. As for your question, ground transportation wasn't an issue because Harbour Island is quite small and pretty much everything was within walking distance. You can rent a golf cart for $50/day, and we did it once, but you can pretty much walk to any place you want. Not sure about the other islands though. Hope this helps!

I've flown my Trinidad TB20 into the Bahamas 3 times now, from MN, we recently got back from Exuma. Very doable, it sounds complicated at first, but it isn't that bad once you understand the process. I'd suggest flying in and out of Fort Pierce, it's a little farther north up the coastline, but is less busy and the FBO staff and customs office are wonderful, plus they have a nice little resturant. We've been to Eleuthrera, Cat Island, Long Island and now Exuma, Exuma had been our favorite so far. One word of caution, if your sensitive to bug bites use plenty of bug spray! I've been very bit up by the sand flies every trip! For some reason I really react to them, you don't see them, don't feel them bite, but two days latter I look like my legs have been shot by bird shot, they itch terrible and last a month!
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your tips, and I’m jealous of how many trips you’ve done to the Bahamas! My goal is to do it every year now, and check out a different island each time! The Exumas are absolutely fantastic, I don’t think I’ve ever been to more beautiful place. And I’ll make sure to bring bug spray with me :) Oh, and thank you for the tip about Fort Pierce. I’ll definitely fly out of a smaller/less busy airport next time. Our friends flew into Boca Raton and had a good experience too, so these are two viable options. Fly safe and thanks for watching! Oh, and Part 2 is already available on the channel, make sure to check it out 😎

FYI, I went to a Coast Guard seminar. If your flight plan says you have life jackets, they will search for you for 24 hours. If you have a raft, a week! PS, the US Coast Guard patrols the Bahamas. Funny story. I was in Key West, walking out to the plane for departure and wearing our life jackets... A jet pilot looked at us and said "doesn't show a lot of confidence!" Love your videos!

Interested in your very nice, smooth landings. Wonder if you could give a brief description of your speeds on downwind, base and final, flap settings, and when you finally bring the power back to idle. I also have a Grumman Tiger, but you could never get enough information. Stay safe.
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment, Raymond! And nice to meet a fellow Grumman driver 😎 I usually pitch for 90 knots on downwind, 1/3 flaps, and then bring power back to 1500 RPM once I’m abeam my touchdown point to start the descent. That gives me a steady 500FPM descent on base and final. I add 2/3 flaps once on final, and rarely use 3/3 (I find that 2/3 keeps me at 75 on final and once I go to idle I’ll cross the numbers at 60-65). Plus, in case of a go around, 2/3 allows for building speed quicker. That’s just the way I fly, so please take it with a grain of salt :) thanks for watching!

Bruno, what an awesome trip! Really looking forward to watching more of the adventures. IFR is up next for me so I can start to venture out further and more safely than I can right now with VFR. A quick question about the trip, when flying with Drew and Lanie, did y'all talk over an air to air frequency or did you connect phones and call via your headset? Always curious what people do as I lined up some trips with other piloting friends. Wish you the best around the holidays!
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Nate! As for your question, Drew and I briefed a common frequency (123.45) as the one we'd communicate on. We'd be always monitoring CTAF and making our traffic calls there, and we talked to each other using our secondary radio. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

As a side note i know this is from your Bahamas trip - your friends in the 150. When i saw they had followed you via the same route I thought of our club 150 and how i wouldnt be confident taking that underpowered old girl over a lake let alone 64 mi of open ocean, at least at an altitude (the thing struggles performance wise at sea level 😂 lol) so low that gliding to land isn't guaranteed at all times especially if atc "help" and give you a straighter path that deviates from your intentions to stay close to the small islets and what not enroute.
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno 14 күн бұрын
Yeah, single-engine over water is not for every plane, and you should only do it when you trust the plane you have! Their 150 is extremely well-kept and maintained, and it has taken them sooo many places. Same with my Cheetah: I take maintenance very seriously and keep it the best version of what it can be, and that’s why I feel confident taking it on trips like this. Hey Bruno, where did you get the 2 man inflatable life raft? My wife and I are going to Abaco in September with our two dogs… trying to decide whether to buy or rent a raft. Was wondering what you did.

Hey man! I borrowed it from a friend, but I know many FBOs in East Florida offer rentals for pilots flying to the Bahamas!

He said that flying close the Bahamas "is pretty much VFR year round and weather is easy to avoid". Thunderstorms and hurricanes for 5 months of the year, but okay.
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno 11 ай бұрын
What I meant is bad weather isn’t a sustained situation there, it’s like Florida. You get pop ups and TS, but it’s mostly VFR.

Every pilot has to set his/her limits. Single engine turbine a go. Single engine piston a no. Twin a go. My limits may not be yours but I am a very old pilot.

Thank you for the video and I am glad you and your wife could enjoy this wonderful journey. However, this was more of a trip log and not an ultimate guide to Bahamas. If people just follow what you said they would be in big trouble with the law. Please be responsible when making videos for the GA community.

I appreciate the comment, but I’m not sure I understand why someone would be “in big trouble with the law” by following what I said. I listed everything you need. Granted, this IS more of a travel log as this is the kind of video I like to make. Thanks for watching!

@@FlyWithBruno You covered a lot of important steps but still missed enough of them. Please watch this video and see what you really call an ultimate guide kzbin.info/www/bejne/mou2oZ9-bMinoZYsi=AqaG2DrWIKzhBm1w I still enjoyed your travel log a lot, especially your wife’s reaction to it. All the best.

How do people afford to do these things??? This is what makes me hate life. I want to own my own plane so bad. But it’ll never happen,maintenance cost, fuel cost cost of the plane…it’s unaffordable
@FlyWithBruno
@FlyWithBruno 12 күн бұрын
Yes, Aviation is expensive and I could only afford it by compromising on other things… I don’t live in a fancy house, I don’t drive a fancy car and I I work my a** off every day to be able to pay for maintenance, fuel, etc… it’s all about finding the balance to achieve what you want
