I am a French teacher in the US, and I find this series perpetuates horrible stereotypes that I, as an educator, have tried to get rid of! I have spent hours of my career convincing my students that the French are warm, generous people and that "not smiling" all the time doesn't mean you are rude. This series angers me, I can only imagine how it makes you feel. I loved hearing your honest response to this series. Merci bien!

I have to say as an American I absolutely adore France and the people are amazing. My husband and I just visited Paris and the people were so lovely. New Yorkers should take lessons! We met a lovely French couple in the park and she gave me this beautiful prayer card, and I was so touched. We talked for hours at a cafe to a young French couple as they shared their dreams of opening a bed and breakfast in Spain. A lovely French lady went out of her way to help us at the air port. I can go on and on. I will always be grateful to the French for our American indépendance. Love you and your channel.❤❤❤

I’m glad you decided to offer you opinion on this show. Justine Leconte also did a video about her impression of it which I think was posted last week. I find it interesting that you both are irritated by many of the same things. If I were French I would be upset too. Yes, it’s meant to be comedy but comedy doesn’t have to be constantly based in stereotypes. It’s lazy writing and lacks any kind of creativity. One thing I didn’t hear from you and Justine (or maybe I missed it) is the stereotype of Emily herself. Why does a young American woman have to portrayed as naive, culturally clueless, and spoiled? I absolutely hate that character type in comedy because, unfortunately, there are people who think it’s real. I’m a 43 year old American woman and I think during my adulthood I have seen minimal progress in how women are represented in media. It’s been a lot of two steps forward and one or two steps back. I could write an entire essay on this topic so I will stop here. It’s frustrating because I know we can do better.

The first time I came to France in the spring of 2014 I spoke zero French. I stayed with a friend of mine in the Lorraine countryside, near the border with Luxembourg. After three months I knew far more French than Emily does in the show. Even in Paris, the only people who spoke English were workers at the transit stations (airport, gare, etc.), which is expected given the high number of tourists. In the Moselle, no one spoke any English, and if I wasn't sure how to say something in French I would have to resort to my high school-level German, since many Mosellans have some knowledge of German given the close proximity to Luxembourg and Germany. I've also been denied a year-long visa into France several times on the basis that I didn't know the language (I also tried finding work in Lux, but all the jobs I was qualified for such as secretary jobs required French-English bilingualism). There is no way this girl would get a full-fledged job in Paris with non-existent French skills.

Maybe it was made for people who live in their fantasies and can't get rid off their stereotypes. I'm a Hungarian living in England. Huns ask me every time: " Is it true that the English drink tea every day at 5pm?" When I say no, tea is different from 'a cup of tea', and the English have the same 5 o'clock snack as we do, possibly with a drink, then they don't believe me. :) My version has not enough romance to it.

Well said, 2 years ago I went to Paris in April with my 2 daughters. My 4 kids paid for the whole trip for my 55 birthday. People here in the USA where so negative about Paris and Parisians. I like to form my own opinions. I believe in being positive and embrace new experiences with an open mind. I loved Paris and the people. I’m Portuguese but have lived in America for 54 years and I love my countries. We stayed near Norte Dame. By the Pantheon. The food, the people, the sites will always stay in my heart. Before going to Paris I watched many KZbin videos on how to say important everyday phrases in French. How to dress Parisian (which by the way is my style). I believe when you visit another country you make the effort to learn as much as possible about the place and it’s people, when you treat people like they should know your language and your ways of living then you are the rude and arrogant one. I’ve had the pleasure of traveling to many beautiful European countries and have never had a negative experience. I’ve treated people and their culture with respect and I’ve been treated the same. I love your beautiful country. I went in April not too many tourist so the streets, metro , etc. were super clean. If Paris is not clean during the tourist months then it’s the tourist who are making the mess. I saw the streets being cleaned every day. Such a wonderful experience to sit in an outdoor cafe and people watch and not being rushed out of the cafe by the waiter. Love your channel.

Bonjour Frédérique! I am an American girl who has been lucky enough to visit Paris and France many times. I agree with EVERYTHING you said, I was appalled and dismayed at how horribly the French people were portrayed. Emily’s wardrobe was laughable, she would have to be worth millions to afford what she is wearing, plus the way the outfits were put together were absurd! Paris is the most beautiful city in the world and the people are wonderful. I did have a cab driver once criticize my pronunciation of a work (he was from Cote D’Ivoire) which hurt my feelings but that was the only time anyone was what I consider rude. The ONLY rude people I have encountered in Paris are Americans or people from other Countries (I won’t name). I understand why you are upset as a lot of the things depicted are problematic. In one way it is a movie and it is not supposed to be "reality" but rather a fantasy but in 2020 we got to be mindful because people will assume that this series reflects real life and it reinforces stereotypes. Always elegant and stylish, kind and warm, so cheerful and funny (without making a fool of herself!). As a French myself, I find her the incarnation of good taste and timeless French culture, in many ways. And I feel the same about Justine Leconte, she is amazing! About Emily in Paris, I gave up after the first episode: too many stereotypes to stomach! Stereotypes can be not only hurtful but also feed discrimination and prejudice. Yes to light entertainment and humour, but that parody/caricature of American and French cultures was embarrassing! So many cliches, so many blanket statements ranging from misinformation to blatant lies and inaccuracies. Whatever was accurate and true got lost in all that. The true star was Paris, I loved all the views and they made me miss this unique, marvellous city where my family lives.

I saw the video by Marie-Anne Lecouer and she was very positive about the show. But her comments on the show consisted basicaly on agreeing with the writers, I mean: the contrast between american and french, etc...bla bla We get it. The thing is, just like Frederique noticed, Emily just couldn't learn how to speak french, for the life of her. Which to me is a nonsenese, because if she has a good job and was offered a promotion, it means she has the basic mental skils to learn the language used in the country she is residing. That, and putting her in a luxurious apartment which is surreal in these days of unnafordable rent. I guess those are the really annoying inacurate facts.

I felt Marie-Anne Lecoeur was trying to be gracious about it. She has proved she is a very respectful person in general. If I remember correctly she did insist on the fact that it was light entertainment, not meant to be taken too seriously. Personally , discrimination and stereotypes should always be taken seriously and my reaction was different from hers. However, my comments were about her channel and personality, in general, not that particular video of her. About Emily not learning French at all, well not everyone learns foreign languages, and usually it's the French who are criticized for being terrible at English. Mostly, the film makers probably didn't want to have too many dialogues in French, aiming at an international public. So that doesn't bother me terribly. But then as I said I quit after the first episode!.What I found funny was when Frederique said that Emily couldn't even pronounce Bonjour correctly, well the girl had just arrived in France - but Frederique who has lived in Australia for many years and is also Australian has a terrible English prononciation half the time, with lots of grammar mistakes. I am not judging, maybe she's doing it on purpose because people love French accent - and English is not my native language either - but I thought it was funny :)

@@brifren2 Thank you for your answer and I guess we're reading things the same way. Just one thing about the language: if the series doesn't want to overwhelm the scenes with french dialogues, it´s easy to just have Emily in secondary dialogues expressing herself in perfect french and then, speaking in english. That hapens all the time, for example, when a show depicts the life of an english speaking person as an expat in China, etc. You see him haggle in a market with a seller in chinese. And then with his family, friends or business, he talks 'native', because that's the language he feels confortable in, to negociate or to use in personal matters. Anyway, just a thought.

The most amazing thing I discovered when I went to Europe, and it was true in Paris as well, was everything closes for lunch except the restaurants, but there’s no hot meal because there’s no cook. Everyone has gone home for lunch. Even the children at school. For three or more hours. It was a shock. My husband was unwilling to go to Paris until he saw ‘Sabrina’. The one with Harrison Ford, not Audrey Hepburn. There’s a phrase that the character Sabrina says that is the heart of the movie. ‘I found myself in Paris.’ The architecture, the art, the street vendors, the performers in the parks for young children, the food, the fashion, the incredible hospitality and kindness is soul healing. It is one of my most cherished memories. I am so appalled that Netflix created this film. Paris and its people deserve better.

As a fun piece of "fiction", my husband and I loved this series. I know there are so many things that are not reality and many are based on old stereotypes. I've been to Paris many times and agree that a lot of it is not the way Paris is. We laughed at the size of her apartment. First we laughed at the width of the staircase in the building. When we were in Paris last year, we stayed in B&B , on the 3rd floor and the steps were very steep, uneven sizes that narrowed as you climbed, with a sharp spiral and the light in the building was very dim. We're in our 60's. The steps were killer for us. I've never once stayed anywhere in Paris with such a wide staircase. I laughed at all of Emily's Chanel jewelry and I think she wore a Chanel sweater as well. I found it funny that everyone in the film was so attractive. As for the affair, a friend of mine who grew up in Reims told me years ago, that many husband's have a mistress, who the wife is aware of and just accepts (perhaps not happily) often the mistress comes to social events. In her case, her father's mistress came to the family's weekly Sunday brunch. And the gifted lingerie I thought should have been Agent Provocateur. LOL. But truly, in any country, how many men give women sexy underwear? Fantasy! I agree with you, for the most part, that it doesn't show the best of the real French people, but I think they portrayed people that way to tell that particular story. Those of us who have been to France and met many French people know the truth. The same exact story could have been told in any city, in the same way...Emily in New York, Emily in Los Angeles, with the same attitudes, the same fashions, etc. There probably ARE people like that in every city...just not all in one person's life, I hope. I think the writers picked Paris because it's so beautiful. I don't think they created the story as a hit job on French people. I do understand why you feel the way you do. But again, it is fiction and fiction by definition is "not a true story". And Emily In Paris was NOT a true picture of life in Paris, the wonderful French people or what 27 year old girls can afford to have while living and working there, unless they are very wealthy to begin with. Love your channel! You keep me laughing, smiling and entertained...not to mention, I have spent more money lately checking out your fashion finds and bought a few of them for myself. (Bought that purple tie front top from Zara recently 💜) Be well.

I have never seen the show, but I have seen Paris and I do know French people. I think I loved listening to your review more than I ever would watching that show. I died at your list of essential words, because it is exactly my go-to vocabulary. And I must say, truthfully, that every French person I interacted with in Paris was polite, helpful, kind and down to earth. Thanks, I loved this video.

I love how passionate you are about your culture, I never saw any of your video before and I was instantly transported in France! I completely agree, I watched Emily in Paris and I am Italian and have worked in Paris a lot and I was gutted by the amount of stereotypes in the production, honestly both on the portraying of Paris and on the portraying of young American Emily who is suuuuper naive and has her head in the clouds and is not how all American girls are at all... many cringed moments! 😅

Thank you . . My daughter and son in law had their honey moon in Paris. It was so romantic and beautiful for them. They stayed 10 days , rented an apartment . They loved it. I myself would love to visit Paris and visit the art museums, sit at cafe , have coffee with real croissant. I am so thankful for your honest assessment. Kindest regards,

Yes! I did not like Emily in Paris AT ALL. I became a die hard Francophile when the book “French women don’t get fat” came out so many years ago. I immersed myself in learning about the French- I LOVE learning about the French! I remember reading a memoir about an American expat living in Paris, and it made me not want to visit. She said that parisians were very cold people. That they simply did not make friends with coworkers, that they are extremely selective in who they do allow into their circle of friends. I also remember a statement about them being hypercritical, calling people out when they started to gain weight, or commenting on them eating a second portion, and flat out telling you when you were not looking good. I remember being shocked because that is not how I imagined the French as being; they have a joy for living that I as a Latina identify with because thats very much a part of my culture. I’m so glad you set the record straight! Now I can go back and dream about visiting France ☺️

Thanks so much for speaking your mind about Emily in Paris. My sister and I grew up on the west coast of the United States. We studied the French language in high school and even hosted a French exchange student. I’ve always wanted to go to France but never had the opportunity to go over seas. I’ve always loved the French people. It’s so sad that the producers of this show are misrepresenting and insulting the French people. We know how bad it feels to be misrepresented because we are American Indian/ Native Americans and we endure many stereotypes and insults. By the way, I am a language teacher of my native language. It’s interesting to me that a number of my students studied French as well, before they started attending my class to learn their tribal language.

I am NOT watching it....was never interested in it because I suspected it would be a profound mess. Americans are doing it so I say no more....I watch British movies and TV because, although I am from USA, I am so disenchanted with the big hot mess and dumpster fire that we are now and that we always bring to TV and Movies. It is almost always violent, mean or just (to me) unwatchable. Now on to important things....your hair looks fantastic! How can I get that side-swept but beautiful lifted bang going on? Please let me know. Love the top you are wearing (so French) and love, love, love your eyebrows today! You always look great but in this video you look très belle. Thank you from Denise .....love love love

i don't even own a tv anymore, also starting seeing what netflix was doing about 4 or 5 years ago as well, so i don't watch that, total propaganda--I think many people do not realize how they are trying to get people use to certain things...people think oh it's just fantasy, it is not! i was an American expat and I'm back home now, but have always watched British television even before. I have a subscription to Acorn and usually just stream other things. It is so weird when I'm around a television now, I am so use to hearing people talking normal that everyone/everything sounds so animated and cheesy. I feel like they think their audience has the mind set of 5 year olds, who else would watch that and I'm including the news, these people are beyond ridiculous, and so insulting. Even though I lived in LA forever and in the Industry, I can't stand anything to do with celebrities, I hate the word. And I can tell you the people at the top are not getting paid the big bucks to entertain you, but to influence you. People don't understand that club--it is so obvious when someone has just joined...very sad. All I have to say is we are all watching a movie ;-).

I saw Justine’s video and then Marie-Anne’s and now yours on Emily in Paris. Loved them all! I was happy to hear that you are friends with M-A because I enjoy the contrast between the two of you-both of you have great humor and I’ve learned a lot from her and greatly enjoy your spontaneous approach. I lived in Europe 23 years in two countries and before that in Asia. I worked so hard to learn each language and was appalled at the idea that others should speak English. The series is so trite. I encountered a few snobs everywhere, but by and large, I was grateful for all the beautiful friends I made who were so patient with my inevitable gaffes. It took us less than a day to get a handle on the Paris metro when we visited... I’m with you. Get a couple of Parisians on your team as you’re planning the series so that it’s not so patently stupid! Thanks for your passion!

I loved this video and your sincerity. I am from the Southern US and there are so many stereotypes we are put through, too. If it helps, most people here think France is a wonderful place. (Also, most of us that live in the South are not ignorant hayseeds like we are made out to be. Sheesh) There is a French- American company where I live and to encounter the “Frenchies” in town or in a restaurant is delightful. I can confirm that watching a table of French people eat is one of the most relaxing things you can experience. Americans are worried and rushing around so much but when the French eat, they are so polite to each other, and enjoy their food and friends. Everyone around them relaxes. It’s lovely. We are hoping to be able to visit France very soon! 🇫🇷🇺🇸

16:38 is why I love you so much 💖 I did watch Emily in Paris. I thought it was a bit juvenile. Something to binge on cold winter nights ❄️⛄ I'm originally from Lithuania, but I've been living in the UK since 2011. Sometimes I work in court and it saddens me to hear that so many people think of Lithuanians as drunks, women beaters and thieves. I guess the only thing I can do is lead by an example trying to show that not all people like that. But I totally get where your frustration is coming from. Much love 💕

I’ve lived in Lithuania for about 6 months in the 2000’s. I’m so sad to hear that people have this stereotype. We found it to be a beautiful country, steeped in amazing tradition with wonderful people. Very well educated, most speaking 3 or more languages fluently and friendly. We even considered trying to buy property there so we could return to visit! And that’s quite a trek to take from Cape Town 😂.

Those two things are for tourist who visit Seville, or when it's a national festivity or something and just in some areas of the country, but I can't dance flamenco and can tell most Spanish people do not agree with bullfighting... so... What it is SO true about Spain: tortilla, paella, red wine and Spanish Ham, that's for sure.

Love Paris. So loved our 7 nights there in 2017. Mastered the metro! Walked 20000 steps a day til then. Versailles was enchanting. Husband found he has French ancestry, some buried in Paris. His Grandmother was a Pierre DeRuard or similar. My grt uncle, from Australia, fought in WW1 and is buried in Greviller's British Cemetary. A long way from home. What a beautiful holy place and we stayed in Pozieres with the Mayor. So poignant to visit the graves. French people so welcoming, grateful and respectful of our dead who sacrificed everything. Going to France really changed my life. Thankyou for your video. I couldn't stand Emily in Paris either.
