Okay, okay, it's true! I have too many books! I get comments asking how much I spend on books, or if I have a specific budget for books. But I didn't get all of my books new at full price. I would say most of my books were not bought full price new. Because I have a pretty strong understanding of the books I like/want, I always keep my eyes open for sales, used books, discount books, free books, and of course, I always request books for Christmas and my birthday :P But that kind of book intake can get out of hand! So, today, I am trying to manage this scenario. Eventually I'd love to have only books on my shelf that I've read, am VERY excited to read, and/or I'm proud to own for some reason (for instance, I love my collection of circus/juggling books, even if I'll never read them all in full). That's the video!
Thank you to my friend Annie for editing this video! ♥️

I grew up surrounded by books, and so I do feel a comfort in being surrounded by books. But I decided early that my strategy for book owning would be to keep the books I love or would like to have for reference only. That being said, I do have a bunch of unread books on my shelves thanks to having the space and keeping them just to say I have them. However I am getting rid of a bookshelf and so I am getting back to refocusing on keeping only what I love or would reference, so I anticipate getting rid of most books I have not read probably by next summer if I do not read them in the next year. For getting new books, I try to read them digitally (through the library if possible) or for cheap the first time before deciding whether to get or keep them. My digital TBR list is far too long to mimic in real life. I saw a video somewhere where a woman decided to delete anything on her to do list if it was not done in 30 days because clearly that task was not urgent nor important so why let it continue to take up mental space. She included books on her list, but I'll give books a year. It takes time and I go through fits and spurts of reading, so I think a year is a good length of time to keep a book and then get rid of it if I have not read it yet. In that case, it clearly is not interesting/relevant enough for me to read right now, and it should be released into the wild incase someone does want to read it before I get around to it.

seeing you add Manufacturing Consent to your bookshelf, meanwhile that book has been sitting in my bookcase for almost 4 years now... I should really get around to reading it

Simon Clark on KZbin made a video about it and I was sold on reading it! Then I found it in an awesome discount bookstore and had to grab it!

I decided to declutter some books too ! It's a mental charge to look at your bookshelves and say "oh i need to read that book someday" and never feeling like it. It's like an annoying to do list for something's that suppose to be your hobby.

OMG, you are so brave. I'm the child of book hoarders. I rescued a 1997 encyclopedia Britannica from the school trash bin. My wife insisted that we would not take it to our new house. I found a friend to hold it on indefinite loan because I'm convinced that one day they will be unobtainable.

Yeah, interesting. If you NEVER feel like reading it, might as well say goodbye! If it doesn't "spark joy", that is!!

Ah, spring cleaning is here! Spending more time at the library lately. Discovered Hans Fallada's 'Wolf Among Wolves'-a pleasant surprise, evoking a whirlwind of emotions. Also enjoying P.G. Wodehouse's 'Joy in the Morning' for some light reading in these uncertain times. My bookshelf ratio: 1 read to every 3 unread. I'm fully embracing the Japanese concept of tsundoku-unopened books enriching our lives, reminding us of endless possibilities!

Yes! And that is why I love being in bookshops and libraries! You don't need to have read the book for it to have some impact on you! (Although, it definitely helps... :P )

Totally with you when it comes to audiobooks. They've replaced so many potential physical books in my life! American Gods feels like it was meant to be an audiobook all along. Neverwhere, too. Undoing Project

You're read 80% of the books on your shelf?! Wow, I aspire to be like you! :P It definitely helps that any academic book I read, I have to put the notes somewhere because I NEED them right now, so I have been forced to develop the habit and it's now easier to do so for non-academic books, too. I still need to read that one book you recommended a while ago... What was it called again? :P

@@morganeua , oh goodness, who knows what I recommended? It could've been Thinking Fast and Slow (caveat: you could skip the chapter on priming. Its effects seem to be very weak after replication attempts), or it might've been nearly anything by Michael Lewis (I LOVED Going Infinite, and his related podcast about the trial). Or Invisible Women (Caroline Criado-Perez). Those are probably my most common recommendations in the last five-ish years!

@@artifaxiom Lol, no, it was a novel! A dystopian I think! The title was a single word, I think. it sounded good! I'll probably recognize it if I see it again. But thinking fast and slow and others by Micheal Lewis are definitely on my reading list, too

What is the audiobook publisher she mentioned? Everand? I'm in the USA looking to get off audible after 17 years.

Yes, Everand! But they're not a publisher, I don't think, they're an app that has a collection of audio and ebooks on a subscription model.
