I'm going BALD at 21

The Summary
I've tried finasteride (AKA propecia) and minoxidil (AKA rogaine) roughly for a year and neither have fulfilled my expectation. I did not see any progress on the drugs, but have seen dramatic cosmetic detriments when coming off of them. Both drugs are FDA recommended and I was told if you want to maximize the effect start while you still have a lot of hair instead of trying to hold on to just a few when it's "too late".
Balding has significantly impacted my self confidence and in a negative way. My brother has repeatedly said my hairline is "crucified" and I have even had friends of mine laugh when they realized I was already balding. Going through this I have realized three approaches to help.
1. Wearing a hat. Black or white and you can wear it with just about any outfit. It may not be helping the problem, but it isn't the root of it either. Weigh out the pros and cons and see if the short term pain alleviation is worth the damage it ~may~ be doing long-term.
2. Getting a haircut. If you can keep the sides significantly shorter (size one or two) than the top then it will give the appearance that the top of your head is thicker than it actually is.
3. Tell those close to you when the topic is relevant. You aren't doing this to receive pity. You are communicating a standard. You are insecure about it and ask that they don't ridicule you for it. An example you can provide is imagine if you ridiculed them for their weight, eyebrows, etc... You wouldn't want to be there would you?
Most of us men will bald at some point: some more than others, some sooner than others. If we can come to terms with who we are and where we are then we will be able to move forward.
Update 2/23/22
Here's what I am currently doing besides #1,2,3. Taking a superfluous amount of biotin (Vitamin B7), washing my hair 1-2 times a week with a special kind of shampoo and condition (no drugs included), and trying to better manage my stress day-to-day.

No matter what stage of life we are in, there will always be something we find irritating to deal with about our bodies. I can't imagine how hard it might be to accept age related sarcopenia when that time comes. All we can do is live the healthiest lifestyle we can in order to maybe slow down or mediate these things. A core stoic philosophy is to only put care and thought in those things we have control over, everything else "is what it is". Focus not on changing those things you can't control, rather - focus on how best to move forward, accepting what has happened. I honestly never really focus on your hair unless you bring it up, and even then my focus quickly shifts away from that fact. Not that it makes how you feel any better but just know you shouldn't let yourself get caught up in insecurity because it ultimately distracts us from what you should focus on; how best to make yourself stronger, smarter, healthier, and a more loving person. Your hair (or lack of it) will never be the reason someone loves you. It will be the way you carry yourself with confidence and openness to growth in those traits I mentioned above (which is not a comprehensive list). Stoics do not suggest that you should just be complacent or emotionless. They encourage you to feel with every emotion that arises, but they suggest you move quickly and reasonably to step 2: what am I going to do given what has happened. Shall you be Sisyphus and continue to push the stone up a never-ending hill, or will you find new purpose in something worth your great protentional?

@@SquatSimp By the way, finasteride only binds to the 2nd and 3rd 5-Alpha Reductase pathways, whereas dutasteride binds to all three pathways and with much higher affinity. It is 3x more potent as a medication and cuts DHT plasma levels, the byproduct of testosterone which causes hair loss, in half by 98% and typically shows results that favor over 90% hair regrowth. Finasteride has around a 70% binding efficacy. Just thought I would let you know. Also the effects take effect quicker and hair comes in even thicker. I took finasteride too, and now am going to switch. The word needs to spread.

Men become a slave to it. I shaved my head because I saw it coming. Getting the jump on it is probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. I got used to the look real quick, so did the people around me. The lack of maintenance is a godsend. I used to like a tight fade, so I was at the barbers fortnightly doing a 30 mile round trip. I put a few years into a beard, now I cannot imagine not shaving my head. I look like a different person but also feel like a different animal. Anyone struggling with this, I recommend trying to lean into it. When you look back, you'll be shocked at how much of your life you spent worrying about a monster of your own making.

Started losing my hair at 18 right after high-school. Overall the thinning has slowed down now (I'm 23) but I can't put it in words how big of a mental toll it was on me throughout college. I started shaving my head at the start of this year every 3-4 so days. It was one of my big dreams to grow my blonde hair out after school. That's why it was such a big deal for me since I could no longer do something I looked forward to for so many years. I had great hair and it really gave me a lot of confidence so it's been tough getting used to the "bald" look but you eventually do get used to it. Haven't gotten any negative comments about it. I'm thinking of getting a couple of tattoos and properly bulk up my physique. I definitely think that bald guys can compensate for their lack of hair. Plenty of my friends never go to the gym and sort of suffer from a lack of ambition so I think that I can gain some ground there. You just have to work much harder to stand out but that's just how it is. A couple of times I have seen older bald guys with younger women so there is hope. You can't feel sorry for yourself forever. Either get a hair transplant or shave it off and hit the gym. Stay strong, I know what it feels like to go through this.

I was really depressed about it honestly, started putting on caps then eventually went on to headwarmers. I literally cannot step outside without my headwarmer... I feel for you, I started balding at 19. My dermatologist didn’t prescribe me with finasteride when I saw him and it took years until services like Keeps and Hims were around. Add mirconeedling to your regimen and you’ll see much more regrowth from minoxidil when it’s in combination. Most non responders or minimally responsive see much better results that way.

@KingdomScorned
@KingdomScorned 7 ай бұрын
@@SquatSimp it varies from person to person. Though from what I’ve seen with research there’s a good chance it will at least improve with regrowing some hair. Though with hair restoration, attacking it from multiple angles is always the best with treatments that have different mechanisms of action, LLLT(laser caps and brushes) show an efficacy that of the same or more than minoxidil does and its non invasive and there’s no sides. I’d say both of those are worth trying since you’re only taking financial risks as opposed to and possible medical risks involved with minoxidil and finasteride. Consistency is 100% key just like lifting though, if you have decided you want to fight this, it’s a long and difficult journey, but like everyone says, the sooner you start the better. Good luck bro, and it’s no shame in both fighting it or accepting it, you have to decide that for yourself which you prefer to do.

If you think you will have trouble with attracting the ladies oh boy let me tell you i get 10x the attention from girls than i used to, its about not giving a fuck about shit you cant really control and maxing out on other attributes either physical like an aesthetic physique, a sick beard, low BF% ect aswell as becoming a mysterious charming man with a high sexual presence and aura

I didn't shed with finasteride (if memory serves). It was minoxidil that caused the shedding, except that it wasn't a phase because I lack a specific enzyme (sulfotransferase enzyme SULT1A1), so the hair loss was permanent and actually made my condition significantly worse

You need a combined effort to stop hair loss and to regrow your hair. You should try 5% Minoxidil twice daily, 1 mg of Finasteride daily, and one session of micro-needling with a stamp (not a roller) once per week for at least 6 months before you throw in the towel. I have friends who have followed this protocol and have had amazing results. Good luck to you.

The culture of putdowns is so common place nowadays. I'm not surprised that there are people who take the opportunity to make fun of the situation. Brothers are the absolute worst. I think you handled it well. Tell them it bothers you. They will say you're being sensitive. Admit you are and leave it at that. If they persist, stop hanging out with them. When they're ready to mature you'll be more than happy to start hanging out again. Same with family. Bro, you're too negative. I don't want to be around your energy.

I think you didn't give finasteride and minoxidil enough time. They might not regrow hair, but they usually prevent further hair loss. I was in a similar situation because my hair loss started when I was 19, and I started using finasteride when I was 20. It was going well for 16 years, but then I started losing hair again when I was 36. Now I'm 38 and use oral dutasteride and oral minoxidil. My new treatments haven't helped to regrow all of the hair I lost, but there's noticeable improvement. I had been shaving to a guard 0 or guard 1 during the summer, which is a good option for diffuse thinners. But it's hard to maintain a shaved head, and in my case, it didn't look good at all. I started using hair fibers when my hair grew slightly longer, and that works really well as a short-term cosmetic solution.
@SquatSimp
@SquatSimp 2 жыл бұрын
I tried both options for roughly a year, but unfortunately saw no results. I think that the lack in progress was more of an enzyme shortcoming than a consistency one. "More Plates More Dates"(YT channel I recommend) has talked about this in more depth. You are right it is possibly I didn't do it long enough, but after a year of use I had to admit to myself that it wasn't working, so I stopped. It's rough, but honestly, you are hot af and look masculine af so i think it will actually look very good. Just know a hairtransplant isnt an ideal solution as well and can have many downsides, so research the ups and downs very well before jumping into the plane to turkey.
