An impulsive purchased has led me to change my mind about a few things and now I need to decide which single axle dump truck I'll keep. I need to decide between a 2003 Sterling single axle dump truck and a 2000 F-750 single axle dump.

I love those small 6 wheeler sterlings /Fords!!!! They are basic as can be inside but a lot of the older ones had cat motors and 8ll trans !!! A lot of people overlook the tri axle sterlings because they don't care for the look of them but a lot of them have high horsepower cats in them and are tough as nails !!@

As a truck driver for a national company with a fleet of various brand trucks, I can tell you none were down as much as the Sterlings. We all hated driving them. Thankfully they are now gone from the fleet. You are making the right decision.

Sorry I almost ruined the surprise of this video by questioning this dump earlier. It is a nice truck, but I'm glad you are keeping the 750. As a professional barbecue cook, I buy/build a lot of different smokers. I go through buyer's remorse and just plain regret on a regular basis. From wood burners to pellet grills to hybrids to homemade rigs, I'll try anything that looks like it may give me an advantage or make life easier. So I definitely understand buying something and selling it because the one you already had makes sense!

Neil, I usually limit my impulse purchases to the checkout register at the home center…. Do I really need a bottle of Gatorade? Or, is Snickers the best choice on a hot summer day… when I know the chocolate will melt before I even peel the wrapper off? Yeah u know… a buck or so that may pan out as a treat. Or, end up being a mess. But, you sir are much more bold at indulging your impulse buys than that! However, I did succumb to a fairly irrational impulse buy last month. A former employee of mine stopped by one afternoon. He knew that I know a bit about hardwood lumber. In the back of his pickup we’re a dozen boards that he’d bought from a cabinet shop estate sale. His plan was to turn them into a workbench. However, he didn’t know what species they were or whether they’d be appropriate for that use. When he took me out to look at them, I was awe struck. He had paid $100 for grade 1 Philippine Mahogany planks! These were imported over 30 years ago, when it was legal to do so. They had been kiln dried and safely kept in climate controlled storage ever since. He and the cabinet makers son thought they were just red oak planks…. But, I knew exactly what they were as soon as I saw them. Their identity was confirmed when I showed him that one had “P-pine Mah” written on it with magic marker. I advised him that it would certainly be adequate wood for a workbench… but using it would be like gold plating a back door stoop! He gave me a look of disappointment. His hopes of building a workbench for $100 appeared to be slipping away. Until, I came to his rescue. I told him I would do some trading. In the end, I paid him back his $100 and gave him red oak planks from my own stock that he could use for his workbench. Neil, I haven’t a clue what I will make from that lumber. It may take me years to decide… but, for now, I’m not regretting my impulse buy. Rescuing this rare valuable wood from becoming a small engine overhaul bench top is reward enough for the time being. And, if nothing else… I succeeded in indulging my fetish for high quality hardwoods. I think you did good with your impulse buy, also. Those repairs and spiffing up have increased its value… and, you did learn that you really do love your old 750!
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 6 ай бұрын
I'm jealous of your ability to identify any hardwood at a glance! I've never been able to lock down that skill set it seems. I can identify some of the obvious ones but beyond that I have to turn to a wiser eye such as my Father-in-law. I think you're more than justified in your impulse purchase and hopefully you find the perfect project for it! By the way, I'm just as tempted by the Snickers in the check out isle as I am by the dump trucks on the local Marketplace! If I'd just stick to the Snickers rather than the dump trucks then I wouldn't have to explain so much to the Mrs! Happiest of Holidays Dave!

Put a lot of stripes on those Sterlings back in 04-07 when I worked in a heavy fleet paint shop. There was a Western Star and Sterling dealer close and the wait times for factory custom paint were too long for trucking companies to wait so nearly all the trucks came in white and we would paint them up like the calendars or in trucking magazines. I don't miss breathing paint fumes, rust, dust and generally getting cancer and COPD everyday but sending custom trucks out the door was cool. All of the custom paint you'd see in the 70s and 80s had kinda died out in the 90s and the early 00's were when they started to get new paint schemes. All the OG trucking companies in town are still using those same trucks and schemes 20 years later.

You're very lucky that life is going so well for you. It doesn't necessarily always happen that way. You ought to give your new dump truck to a body shop to eliminate the rust and for gods sakes undercoat it. Your roads have salt (my dog has fleasl). Get a small sandblaster and really CLEAN underneath and then undercoat. It's worth it. Use regular rubbing compound on your wheels.

Hiya Neill! Regarding the condition of the F-750; over here in the UK. all vehicles over three years old have to have a twelve monthly test for roadworthiness. Any sign of holes due to rust is a failure: the F-750 is so bad it would need quite a few $$$$$ spent on it or scrapped, sorry! Beside that keep the videos coming, cheers.🚜🚜🚜

I have owned single axle dump trucks for over 20 yrs. The first thing I ask when considering a new single axle dump truck is what is the empty weight. You can only have 20K lbs on the rear axle, so it doesn't do any good to have a big strong truck if it is too heavy to put enough in the bed to use all that capability. The Sterling looks like it might be too heavy to be really useful. You can generally fit 10 tons of crushed rock in a 10 ft x 8 ft bed, but it is seldom legal to do so with a single axle truck.

One of my biggest regrets is not getting a CDL back when the process was easier so that I could one day drive a dump truck like that. Now - the process is expensive, extremely time consuming (I'd have to take multiple weeks off of work), and not worthwhile for someone who isn't a full-time truck driver.

If you to really want shine up your wheels start with some 180 grit sandpaper then move up to 400 and 600 until most of the sanding marks are gone you’ll need a polisher and some airway wheels. Use a brown compound and an orange/yellow wheel to cut and a blue/white compound and a flannel wheel to finish they will look like a mirror.

TOTALLY understand your weakness for buying dump trucks, Neil! I'm 61 years old and bought my first dump truck (2003 F-350 dually w/ 7'x10' bed) in October of 2021. Love it! It's actually my daily driver now. It's roughly the same wheelbase length and gets about the same mileage as the 2021 F-250 Crew Cab XLT that I had before it. Was at a meeting a couple of weeks ago and the local school superintendent (74 years old) says "Is that your dump truck? I've always wanted a dump truck!" LOL! Love your videos!! From what I know about Sterling trucks now, they're basically Fords just rebadged. I know as well, back a few decades ago they were their own line and company that was somewhat similar to Oshkosh but ended up flying too close to the sun in a manner of speaking. They're not terrible trucks at all, while even being rebadged Fords they're somehow better quality for the most part. Certainly a regional favorite because Sterling trucks in my area are like chicken teeth, but got a few hours more northward and one couldn't swing a shovel without hitting one. Either way, that's a right fine acquisition, even if to me, the shorter rear overhang looks like it got booted in the butt hard. Still neat. As for the replacement panels on the dump box and for the F750 cab. Weld through primer is a friend, can't emphasize that more. I can't really comment about the polymer skate rink, because the last time I had anything to do with skating, it was roller skates and Clinton was in office. I also fell and hyper extended all the ligaments in my right knee, tore some cartridge, and somehow cracked but didn't break the Tibia in one place, Fibula in another about three inches away. Teacher said I was just acting hurt. Never skated again after that.
