@@crazyneonate8626 I agree, its so refreshing to have a real person on the other end of these talks. I also enjoy the visual aspects , but often listen while I'm doing other things. This was by far the most distracting I've heard. I'm in a quiet place so thankfully I was able to turn the volume ultra low. I kept hearing growling and thought it was the dogs which made me pause the video and listen for a min each time. Usually i can just tune game sounds out and they wont even register.

Brain dead takes can be disseminated with a slogan whereas, 'Well if we look at the data on this issue it'll actually show that x makes y and then y can be used to generate z and this means that x isn't actually the problem and maybe we should address the outliers in v to fix the problem for the people who fall out of x before y or z' has no way in hell of being taken on board by anyone who hasn't already got a foot in the door. tl;dr: Social Workers and Teachers supply immense public good but have an incredibly hard time paying off their debt. That makes me emotionally upset with his statement even though they are logically sound and teachers + Social Workers aren't the majority of college graduates. It emotionally bothered me, but his argument was sound but my Mom is a Social Worker and I am going into Social Work. It requires a masters degree but it pays very poorly compared to similar professions. Yet Social Workers are one of the more in demand jobs right now and going forward. Despite being such an in-demand job and needing so much schooling, it is incredibly difficult for Social Workers to lose their college debt. My Mom is physically incapable of paying off her student loan debt before she dies and the same will likely be true for me. We will both be dedicated public servants helping the most vulnerable groups in society. But we are going to die with debt for going to college. That bothers me quite a bit. And I hear similar cases with teachers or other jobs in the vein of helping a lot of people and performing important work that requires a lot of training. But logically Destiny is correct in that most people going to college aren't teachers and social workers, they are people making that extra income.

Getting rid of the Senate is such an unnecessary extreme solution to a problem. A) Make the House stronger (or make the Senate weaker) by stripping Senate of some duties and giving to the House B) Reverse the roles of the Senate and the House C) *My Opinion* Allow the House to overrule a Senate ruling if the House can get a supermajority to vote for the bill to pass. Which will go on to the President. I agree that the Senate is too powerful, but muting every single small state would be such a stupid overreaction, that basically flips the power imbalance to populous states.

The thing a lot of people are missing on the student loan thing is that federal loans are in forbearance until September. Rushing to forgive federal loans (which is so far the only forgiveness anyone has proposed) isn’t going to stimulate the economy or free anyone up. They currently don’t have to make payments and aren’t accruing interest.

My parents paid for my University, and I know a lot of wealthier people who had their University paid for by their parents. The idea that the people going into debt are somehow coming from a place of advantage and are not deserving of financial aid to pay off their student debt, especially those who will become doctors or lawyers who have to survive unpaid internship or practicums, this is just ridiculous.
@hawk622
@hawk622 2 жыл бұрын
It’s also kinda ridiculous to ignore that they become the top percentage earners. Yeah, maybe the first few years after you graduate might suck…but you will become better off than a significant chuck of society and in the 95% range of most of society if you pursue a post grad degree. Sure you can take the argument of niche fields that don’t pay well, that is a decision that has consequences. If you don’t like the consequences, don’t make the decision or put in the work to seek out the money to pay for the degree there is a lot of money that goes unclaimed in scholarships, grants etc. A big problem is in general we have become lazy and complacent as a society. Few people want to actually put in the hard work and delayed gratification it takes to actually become successful. Pursuit of passions is admirable, but it has a cost.

If you ever want to be shocked, look at how much doctors actually earn. Some of the specialties pull like 750k yearly, a family practice doctor will pull 2-300k easily. The grad student could just work as a doctor for a few years, save, and then go do the PHD if it’s that important.

I'm a first year grad student in the exact same field as the kid that was talking about his grad student loans. MOST PhD programs in the field offer full paid tuition + a stipend. Not to mention that NIH funding is readily available after your first year plus tons of other grant opportunities. It's not uncommon to get paid >200,000 per year after graduation + residency so he has no room to complain. If his undergrad gave him that much debt he should have gone to an in state public school if that was the issue.

Currently at 48:26 at the moment... When it comes to student loan debt, a ton of jobs out there that previously didn't have a degree requirement are now expecting you to have a degree... Maybe not a PhD, but a bachelor's degree is becoming a common expectation even if getting it still isn't that cheap for a lot of people... The demand in society for post-secondary education is increasing... So I think maybe you shouldn't forgive someone's masters or PhD since those should help you get a pretty cozy job, but perhaps student loan forgiveness should just be targeted towards the bachelor degrees... Since just getting a bachelor's degree doesn't mean as much as it used to (even though it's still quite a lot better than just high school) whereas if you got a masters or PhD that still means a lot...
