"I'm GUTTED You've Lost Your Seat!" | Ex-Tory MP Miriam Cates Talks Tory "Problem" With Split

Rishi Sunak has apologised after leading the Conservatives to their worst ever election result as a Labour landslide swept Sir Keir Starmer to No 10.
The outgoing Prime Minister said he would quit as Tory leader once arrangements are in place to choose his successor, potentially triggering another round of Conservative infighting as MPs scramble to replace him.
Sir Keir will become prime minister after a Tory rout which saw former premier Liz Truss and a dozen serving Cabinet members lose their seats.
New Conservatives co-chair Miriam Cates says only the Tories have been in power since the “advent of social media”, and believes “Labour will also fall victim to that culture”.

The Conservative Party slowly stopped being Conservative in 1965 when they chose Edward Heath as their version of Harold Wilson. Then after 1970 when he became Prime Minister we had a series of non conservatives - Major/Cameron/May/Johnson/Sunak who just copied Labour to stay in power and yes, that even included one Margaret Hilda Thatcher. But that's a story for another time.

The Tories cannot whinge about Reform. Farage did the Tories a huge favour at the Brexit election by standing all his candidates down, handing Boris a clear run, and the 80 seat majority. The fact that the Tories- Boris, Truss & Sunak ‘spaffed it up a wall’ and did nothing, is entirely down to them.

The betrayal was off the scale; the poor manner in which some politicians are treated is symptomatic of the level of dishonesty they have suffered over 14 years. Because you vote for your representative in Parliament. She was a brilliant orator and campaigner for basic human values. Reform UK should NEVER have stood a candidate in her constituency. Reform UK are wolves in sheep's clothing.

As a Labour supporter, I want the Tory party to tack towards Reform and the far right. It’ll keep them out of power for a second term.

Problem is it’s about power, not service. Once you get power you can push through any agenda to keep power for power’s sake. We need to wake up to this reality. Politicians are NoT here to serve. It’s a job with gold plated benefits for them

Sunka was stood next to Boris and his cake, that was just an excuse. Nothing Truss did had any affect on the economy, nothing she suggested past parliament, she wans't there long enough. It was the markets and remoaner hysteria that did the problem there.

Angela Rayner is already sharpening the knife for starmer, we will see no change, the backstabbing and the scandals will carry on as usual. Be interesting to see starmer flip flops through his weekly grillings now. The only silver lining is that Farage will be there to observe and challenge directly.

Tend toward freedom for the individual to build a life, and thrive, and the good in Britain will support a party of free thinking people. A small, rights respecting state, for a great nation. Rather than a large state and a profoundly unprincipled and weak nation. Repeal the town and country planning act, let the British live again. Repeal repeal the coercive and preemptive legislation that is everywhere, that is forced on us by mobs of the unthinking, seeking greater whatever.

In my parents’ constituency , Bristol North West, there was NO Tory candidate! Laura Saunders had the whip removed and she wasn’t replaced! It’s like they just gave up! They had two weeks to remove this stupid woman and shunt someone else in as Tory candidate, but they didn’t even try. My parents didn’t vote.

@@joycegibbs5267 well yes, it’s true, but before the boundary changes last election, it was always a Tory seat! After, it went to Labour. But there was no fight in these Tories. After that moron got in trouble for betting on the election date, they allowed her to cling on until the whip was removed at the 11th hour, leaving no time to pull in anyone else. They just gave up!
