You pinpointed why the Riddler is so scary within the first five minutes. It’s the ordinary, every day fears that he taps into. Someone breaking into your house, waiting for your at your car, an act of terrorism in a public place, etc. The riddles just amplify the stakes

the car chase, if you think about it...he deliberately gave penguin a head start, which allows all the chaos to ensue. there's a few times in the film that subtly give the impression Batman allows or pushes for certain events to unfold and the closing shot of the film is him riding facing towards screen left...which is traditionally a framing used for villains as it's against our left to right way of scanning visual information. I think they cut the joker scene as it really plays on that idea of batman being in the wrong and also being way way closer to Riddler than he or the audience wants to admit. It also struck me that Riddler had to know who batman really is, his cards mirror the scene of alfred getting blown up and the housekeeper answering the phone,and there's other things in his home that indicate he really does know, inspite of what he says when in arkham. later on It's an odd lighting choice with the red flare to guide the people out...like they're not really saved and are being led by a demon to a false salvation...i mean, the city is flooded and is wide open for even more crime and they're following the guy who kinda created the whole situation by going vigilante and he's still going to run around in a costume and beat people up. just for justice instead of vengeance now...and probably side-lining Bella Real (The Real War) again XD anyhow, I'm not criticising the film for that at all, i loved this movie, and really appreciate the layering and ambiguity...at least i'm assuming that layering is deliberate, given how much Reeves studied David Finchers movies..there's even a little nod to Kubrick in the elevator/corridor muzzle flare fight, the elevator has a 2001 monolith within a sphere on the back wall. There's a lot going on under the surface
@doc80132 жыл бұрын
That wasn't intentional, though. His car stalled out and he had to re-crank it to get it going. Which makes it even cooler imo. He's so early on in being the batman and does everything himself, so it makes sense that everything isn't perfected yet. Same thing happened with his wing suit.
@eZTarg8mk22 жыл бұрын
@@doc8013 it's where that ambiguity or slight uncertainty comes in, you're right, that's a logical reason for that chain of events but not the only one. That that ambiguity is present so consistently in the story is what caught my eye, and given who's style of film making he's paying homage to, that ambiguity and contextual shift is very likely deliberate. If you do re watch this, there's some weird reflections at a few points that look like someone spying on scenes where the Riddler shouldn't be, and lighting or shot compositions that loosely form his mask, and i'm fairly sure i saw the gang initiate wearing a beanie hat in the police cell when batman regains consciousness surrounded by cops, which has some interesting implications. Stuff like that i don't usually see in comic book movies beyond ooh look at the easter egg. I was really surprised to see it in this film. Its a credit to Reeves that he's balanced that (mostly...it could do with a little trimming) with some spectacular set pieces, engrossing performances and a solid surface story
@doc80132 жыл бұрын
@@eZTarg8mk2 I see what you're saying but it seems as though you may be looking for ambiguity in spots that don't call for it. As in the batmobile chase with penguin. There's nothing very ambiguous about the car stalling. It def has deeper meaning that engrosses the whole of the story but that has to do with the DIY aspect of this youthful, inexperienced vigilante.
@germin9784 Жыл бұрын
@@doc8013 The car stalling was done by Batman on purpose. He tried to chase away the Penguin, to separate him from his henchman and make him easier to catch, which didn't fully work out. Also to get Gordon out safely

I'm gonna be honest, I thought this film was amazing but I get lost in films really easily, which makes it a bit confusing when trying to understand the plot. The Batman was no exception for me, I got a lot of the characters confused with each other and didn't catch all of the motivations. Regardless, all other aspects in this film, I loved. Battinson quickly became my favourite live-action Batman (Will Arnett is unapologetically my favourite lol, I loved the Lego Batman Movie), and the cinematography especially was top-notch, like that monologue scene where the criminals see the bat signal and fear the shadows was incredible. I'm looking forward to when it comes out on physical so I can watch it again (and hopefully understand it a bit better this time, haha).

Cool to see a British perspective on the film. I always felt like you guys watching a Batman film is a lot like how I watch a Bond film. Its like, I get it and enjoy it (and the surrounding mythos) even if a few particular references go over my head. Batman is a quintessentially American story, but its themes and action are broad enough to appeal to a worldwide audience. You seem to have gotten a lot of it in your analysis - more than most of the American reactors I've seen. I guess the "dumb Americans" stereotype has some truth to it, haha. ;)

@@Mikey-em8hs I do understand that but batman's character is really focused on vengeance. He really cares less of what the people of Gotham thinks of him as long as he put the criminals to justice. That is why he works in the shadows. Hope on the otherhand is Superman's representation. That is the reason why their tandem is so great, a balance of light and dark. The contrast of Hope versus Vengeance. The only thing I didn't like was the very end where Batman was assisting with air rescue. Batman is no paramedic working in the light. That's just the antithesis of who he is. Yeah its a nice sentiment and all, but Batman usually calls Gordon to dispatch paramedics after he's beaten someone up a little too much. At least that's in the comics my head was absorbed in during the 80s and 90s.
