I always thought the Nolan Dark Knight movies captured the spirit and soul of the characters in a way that showed awe and respect for the source material specially the Joker, even if as those movies progressed the versions of the characters started deviate more. This movie is the one that captures that "nostalgic" feel felt in the Animated Series and the Burton films, because it purposefully creates a gothic atmosphere and a noir gritty vibe, and the film has an individual creative identity in its design choice and cinematography to create Gotham as its own character. This movie is also most like the comics, even if ironically this film feels more realistic than all the other Batmovies. It was the weight of the story, the character development, the drama, the creepy serial killer villains, the fights were much better here. We just needed even more gadgets, even if we saw those cool recording contacts and taser gloves, we need all the weapons as featured in the Arkham games, they would have come in handy taking out those socially realistic germane Riddler shooters. We got plenty of nods and easter eggs, Hush, Court of Owls, Bane and venom, Hugo Strange, all of whom along with Riddler in the comics at one point know Bruce Wayne is Batman. Kinda wish the filmmakers went ahead and gave us supernatural elements while keeping the grounded gritty vibe to get some other Batvillains we haven't yet seen on film before. And to my surprise, my favorite character here was the Penguin, Colin Ferrell did a freaking fantastic awesome job, never mind those prosthetics artists, again, finally a modern comics Penguin brought to life. Check out the deleted scene, because it's very on point and I can see why they took it out, but I wish they had let it in, I think it was an awesome bonus.

For riddles like the justice one at the funeral; you have to look at the context. Yes lots of things are blind but what is cruel, poetic, or blind? Justice. Why is that the answer? Because "Poetic Justice" "cruel justice" and "blind justice" are all common terms. Plus, the personification of Justice has a blindfold because Justice is supposed to be blind; I.E. not see a person's social class or wealth but administer a just judgment regardless.

23:00 Definitely American muscle, but not a Camaro...it's mostly a '69 Dodge Charger (or possibly a '68), with a LOT of modifications. 31:50 Yup, Paul Dano is giving a friggin master class in "how to act like a psychopath" here. Personally, I'd love to see a Riddler/Scarecrow or maybe Riddler/Victor Zsasz team-up with Paul Dano and David Tennant (who also plays an amazing sociopathic bad guy) for a future Batman flick...probably won't ever happen, but I can dream. 39:50 Nah, not venom...it's a mixture of epinephrine and adrenaline, to counter the probable cracked sternum and multiple fractured ribs he'd have after tanking a pair of 12 gauge buckshot rounds in the chest from like 3 feet away...his armor's amazing, but even it has limits. 40:35 They're probably trying to hide from the shooters that were up in the rafters...going up the bleachers just gives those shooters a better shot at you, hiding under them gives you at least the illusion of cover. Folks were pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place. 41:10 Love this sequence...it (and this movie honestly) really captures the duality of Batman in a visual way no other Batman movie has managed to...he's simultaneously the savage monster in the darkness for the criminals of Gotham, while also being the single light of hope in the shadows for the innocents of the city.

It was nice to have a Batman who hasn't completely ironed it out yet, both what Batman is supposed to be and what Bruce Wayne is supposed to be, Batman Begins is still great at highlighting the details of why he becomes Batman, but once he has the suit on he's pretty much got the hang of it, it's nice to see in this how there is still growth after putting on the suit. I really like the Nolan films but there is this somewhat assumed sense of grandeur to Batman as a symbol right from the start, whereas I like that in this they clearly establish that Batman would not be this instant symbol of justice and they never lose sight that Bruce is a traumatized and mentally damaged individual, after Batman Begins I think they forget that a little. As you said they also flesh out Gotham so well, both stylistically and in terms of making it so that we don't need a backstory for every character, I completely buy the city that we're shown would create characters like the Penguin and the countless other villains I assume we'll see going forward. I think the Riddler is the best example of that, both the clues he lays out and what we see of Gotham in the wider film makes it easy to believe Gotham would create someone like him, even when he explains his backstory its less of a revelation and more this sense of lining up all the information we've already been given and seeing just how bad his experiences were. Plus even the score, especially the Riddler's theme once it gets more bombastic is straight up in the style of the animated series which I love. He was probably my favorite character in the film aside from Batman, I just thought the whole Zodiac killer approach to the Riddler was a genius move. I like Riddler in the comics but his design I've always felt is too goofy to come across serious and threatening, so from the first trailer I was hooked by that rework alone.

I just saw this movie & I'm tired of saying this...but, another batman movie is the greatest superhero flick going so far! I don't know how many times I said, "Beautiful Scene or Beautiful Shot" while watching this movie, lol. *The opening with the music & Batman's Dialogue w/ everybody being scared of the dark was great. But, the whole symbolic part where he jumped onto the electrical cable, cuts it off with the batarang on his chest after that henchman used the same line that he did in the beginning of the movie, "I'm Vengeance"...realizing he was wrong. Then falls into the water, re-emerges "reborn"/"baptized" anew, becomes a symbol that he is..leading everybody by example with the flare/"Guiding Light" and gets their trust & gets them to come together/help each other, etc... I liked the little nod that Batman injected "Venom Toxin" into himself & he went into overkill mode that damn near smashed that guy's face in...Then finally, the shot of Batman riding away on the motorcycle, but staring at catwoman riding away in the side/rear view mirror, but "objects are closer than they appear" when looking through rear view mirrors, lol... Yeah, great movie... (Colin Farrell played The Penguin and whoever did his prosthetics makeup deserves all kinds of rewards! There's supposed to be a HBO MAX penguin series from this Batman Universe, but how Discovery is cancelling everything now, I doubt it.)*

It is possible the juice is Venom because there are comics where Batman develops Venom and also in a book that came out as promotional material that shows Bruce when he was younger and it details how he loved chemistry

Great video and analysis! I'm a first timer to the channel. :) I would have to say that my favorite part of the movie was when the man he was trying to help said, "Please don't hurt me," and you could see the look of confusion flash across Batman's eyes--why are the people he's trying to SAVE so afraid of him? I can see him holding that question in his mind throughout the movie and then it just clicks when he's talking to the Riddler...Batman is inspiring the wrong people.

I love this movie I’ve watched it like 5 times. It’s know where as good as the animated films but it’s is definitely the best Live Action Batman movie, TDK may be better movie but it’s not a better Batman movie.

Wanna say screw anyone who thought Robert wouldn't be good in this role. He killed it and hope he'll be back for a second film. :) So the Riddler was like 1 or 2 steps away from connecting that Bruce is Batman. In fact in the comics he does find out but Batman convinces him that it would be no fun if everyone knew the truth of the riddle of his persona. But yeah, if he had a little more digging in this version of Batman, he most likely would find that Bruce and Batman are one and the same. The irony of course about the Riddler's plan to assassinate Bella Real is that she isn't like the other fake politicians (it seems like of course) and really does want to do something good for the city. :(

I love love LOVE the Batmobile in this. Love it. I didn't like the tumbler from the Dark Knight trilogy because it just felt like an army tank and it always boggled me how only 1 guy was like "Hey, isn't that our experimental tank thing?". In 'The Batman' it feels like something that could have really been built by someone who has money. And the sound/feel in theaters when it was revving up. I felt the vibrations through my body. It was amazing and I am in love with that Batmobile. And the music in this was incredible and I just absolutely adore this movie. It was so very well done.

23:26 Yeah the Tumbler started a bad trend where instead of a car with weapons and gadgets the Batmobile just became a tank not only in the Nolan films but the DCEU and the Batman Arkham Knight game too.

I think it’s an overall good film, and even good Batman film, but I also think one of the crowning achievements of this film was the fact that they shot it low light and made it feel dark… BUT you could actually see nearly everything. So many movies purposely film with limited lighting for aesthetics, mood and ambiance and all they end up doing is just misusing proper film lighting, which makes it too difficult for the audience to see anything-- (Like Batman Vs Superman or first Suicide Squad film)here was the opposite! Thankfully!

My favourite part was probably the Venom injection. That blew my mind and gave me the impression that the villains won't just be villains for Batman to oppose. We're potentially going to see some real great stories in the future. I am so excited. This is the DCCU Batman that we start with. Then Superman and so on. At least that's one way to go.

I agree that the transformation of Colin Ferrell was pretty amazing. I am curious what you both think about the decision for Pattinson not to disguise his voice when he is Batman. That is different than pretty much all of the previous Batman films (with the exception of the old Batman television series when Adam West used his regular voice). There is talk that the green liquid batman injected himself with was an early version of Venom, but not the fully-developed version that results in superhuman strength and causes addiction. And I think this Batman film leaned more into what made Batman's reputation in the comics--the world's greatest detective. Now, this version is a younger version, so he makes more mistakes both in his detective skills and his combat skills (he receives a lot of impact blows and shots, which a mature Batman is able to avoid). It will be interesting to see if they improve both skill sets as an older, more experienced version takes on (I assume), his most deadly villain, the Joker.

Technically is he disguising his voice anytime he does an American accent?

The batmobile in this was a "Batified" classic Dodge Charger. I think the sound design was made with that in mind if you listen closely. '68 Chargers have an iconic ROAR like a lion, but the batmobile obviously has a different engine. Also I loved hearing you guess at what it was because I think they deliberately shot the car chase to make the batmobile look juuuuuust dark and blurry enough to be nothing more than a big scary black car unless you look extra close or pause the movie. It puts you in the shoes of Penguin, wondering "wtf is that thing?! how is it still after me?!" I love this movie, and this was such a fun vid as always!
