I’ve been building tube guitar amps for 20 years and am also not an expert. I love when engineers tell me I’m wrong for not following the established method, but they can’t argue that it doesn’t work. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re getting through to thousands of other non expert experimenters. This is my favorite HAM channel on the KZbins.

I posted on a Pota group for a little help on my setup last week. I'm using RG58 and the first comment was "WASTE OF TIME" use RG8X (no help with my issue). I used to run and own a commercial antenna installation company for 35yrs and did the maths between the two cables and it was 0.2db for my cable length. Another ham chimed in with 25k QSOs and 2 decades on RG58. The guy responded just saying "why not t use the best" I just wanted some help as I'm new to HF and Pota and have RF feedback into my G90 but there is always one, it just took him 9 months to get around to you. These guys have a full schedule correcting the internet 🤣 I love the videos and you do inspire me. Thank you.

Awesome to see Allison with you. I’m pleased to see she’s doing well. Regarding Mr. RF Engineer, people like him are those who like to upset others. In my opinion, ham radio is about experimenting and having fun at the same time. Designing, building and testing your own antennas is all part of experimenting. I love watching your videos, because you explain what you have built and what bands you are going to use it on. I used to build my own antennas a long time ago for 11m CB radio, but medical issues intervened and put a stop to these activities. Mother Nature played a role in this also. Main thing is that I am still alive to watch your videos. In my ham radio infancy, I had skeptics trying to convince me that there was no way I was going to get a signal to the USA from my radio station. I proved them wrong, when I ended up involved in a qso that had a dozen other radio operators. That was my idea of fun.

I’ve started watching your videos lately Walt, at 63, studying for an amateur license in CANADA (which has learning materials issues as experienced hams may know). What you’re doing and have done is fantastic! That guy’s one subscriber tells the whole story. John Portune W6NBC mentioned in one of his presentations on designing Yagis that his design recommendation would give you 95% of the performance of engineered commercial antennas. If you’re contacting with NC on HF in Poland, how important is that last 5%? Your beautiful bride is precisely - clearly way over the 95% line there - that and I am very happy to see such a sweet little moment you both shared!

Walt, I'm just a guy who likes to learn. And I have learned a LOT from you. I want you to know that I appreciate it more than I can say!! I've also taken some needed lessons from Michael (KB9VBR) in regard to J-pole antennas... I've built both J-Poles and several of your examples as well... I currently have your Vertical Dipole constructed and wound up along with several others, ready to go at a moments' notice to the field. Thus far, my analyzer tells me I have near perfect SWR on the dipole and close enough on the J-Pole for safety's sake on the frequencies I've built them for (10 - 11 meters). If not, I can always use my small auto Tuner... Don't have a G-90 yet, but it's coming soon... Keep doing what you're doing!!! And Thank You again!!!

I took your advice, "don't overthink this stuff"... I created a 72ft, end-fed, speaker wire dipole with a 9:1 unun. I hot-glued a porceline terminator to the far end and threw it up in a tree; it's about 20+ feet up. The unun end is about 26 feet up. Brother, I was talking to Japan and Korea from Washington State and could now reach stations from one side of the country to the other. There was so much activity on the radio... AMAZING. I added an inline noise filter and it got even better. THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE! On a side note: Since that worked, I am going to use a little higher quality wire and see what raising it to 40 or 50 feet does.

I am an Electrical/Electronics engineer and I find your videos very good. None of us knows it all. We all learn from what we do and what others do. There are many levels of expertise and language. When I give lectures I consider my audience and explain things in terms they can understand. Not everyone can grasp so called “imaginary” concepts but there are other ways to look at things. I have another name for people like your drive by Engineer but will not repeat it here. I try and make comments from my experience that may add light to the subject. Maybe I am one of your drive by engineers also, hopefully in a good sense. I have a few videos on some radio topics but nothing on the magnitude of what you do. I realize how hard it is to do also! So what if your (or my) explanation is not correct in its purest technical sense or choice of terms. Your antennas usually work, it’s fun plus we learn each time. I seem to learn even more when something I do does not work!

A little controversy is better than just blind dogma, anyway. Showing something practical that works and then giving a conjectural explanation about something somewhat mysterious in its working and getting criticized by someone with a different opinion is good. You have to be brave to allow yourself to be criticized and take it, right or wrong. The result: the hobby is enriched. So good on you for the outstanding effort and anyone that criticizes without offering a logical alternative is just puffing.
