Every radio manufacturer needs to read the room and install powerpoles in their new radios, since every ham out there pretty much mods their radios for powerpoles or builds cables for powerpoles.

Nice work. I got one a week ago and hooked it up to a 'new' diy 17 meter vertical dipole at 28 ft peak built from the parts of two old tv antennas and QSLed Trinidad off Venezuela coast at 18 watts at 5x7 2750 mi from MO. He had a multiband vertical at same height and 300 watts. Then I fried a celabratory 'pigsicle' (candied porkchop) on George Foreman grill.

Aloha Walt, I truly loved your live stream earlier today, late morning here in Honolulu. First time a live stream that wasn’t at 2-3am HST. My Vietnamese wife is a really great chef and I ❤ her Salmon dishes. I’ve missed her so much for the past week as she and all of her childhood friends are touring Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City for their high school reunion. So Walt, I bought my first G90 about four years ago from bd7-Maple on eBay and then I bought a second G90 used one earlier this year from a fellow soldier station on JBPHH. It has an updated firmware as compared to my older G90 but doesn’t have the Anderson PP connectors but did come with the mounted fan tray. The G90 is just a super easy radio to set up and get onto the air, plus the SWR Meter and built in tuner is fantastic! ❤ So as a project, I bought the manpack kit for the IC-705 from the same eBay seller bd7-Maple, whose name is Frankie, speaks perfect English, moved back to mainland China to take care of his mom over a year ago. I’ve been buying transceivers from Frankie for almost two decades now. I learn a lot from your videos because we both have the oceans to our advantage and I learn tricks about antennas and counterpoises from your videos. ❤❤❤ Todd de WH6DWF 73’🇺🇸

Great video Walt! I was able to run my G90 the first time right out of the box. I think the biggest difference between your old G90 and the new one is that the filter control is different. You can't control the left and right sides independent of one another on the latest firmware. If you old G90 was firmware 1.73, the new firmware had digital USB and LSB settings. I've been making contacts all over Europe on 10-meters. Have fun with the new G90. I'm going to buy a second on at some point because I love this radio so much. I broke through some big pile-ups on Sunday and my contact were surprised that I was running 20 watts and a wire antenna. You can't beat the built in tuner. Thanks again...73...Hugh...KN6KNB

Just got my first g90 about 2 weeks ago and have been using it on a 17ft whip like you did in the video. It has been great for me as a newbie in the POTA world. I will say the ATU in the g90 will match it on 40 and I may a few contacts, and it will match on 80 but with all the losses no one cod hear me. Glad you are enjoying your 2nd g90 as I am enjoying my first. Take care.
@josephthomas83183 ай бұрын
I don't think it's "loss" on 40 and 80 as much as it's low efficiency from using 1/16 of a wavelength on 80m. Try taking about 53-55ft of wire and clipping it to the top of your 17ft whip and running it as an inverted L or a sloper. Thats about the 71ft of a common "random wire" and it may work a little better on the lower bands for you if you ever wanted to do nvis.

I have a relatively new G90, complete with the built-in power pole connectors. I'm really impressed with it, especially for the money! I'm taking a quick road trip later in the week, and the G90 will be coming with me. Hopefully the bands will continue to be on "good behavior". I won't be near any salt water, but I will have elevation working in my favor. Dang, that salmon looked absolutely amazing! It's absolutely brain food -- one of two I can always count on to put my noggin in turbo mode (pizza is the other). Sadly, I'm the only one in my family who likes it, so I'm generally limited to having it when I go out. National seafood month sounds like the perfect excuse!

Add me on your list of victims. I had one of the original G90s but sold it to get an X6100. Today I ordered a new version G90. After Hurricane Helene I decided I want an HF rig in my go bag. The G90 with 20 watts and a world class AT sounds like the best way to go. I figured in an Emcomm situation being able to tune just about anything would give me more antenna options. So, a new G90 will be here in about a week.

I understand tuning say a 17’ whip but I’m hazy on how the counterpoise or radials affect the SWR. And do both affect it the same way. Let’s say I need to lengthen my antenna to get the resonant point to where I want to operate. Can I do that by lengthening the counterpoise or the radials. Or do I have to adjust the 17’ whip. In other words do the radials or counterpoise affect SWR or just your ground?

Walt. Got my G90 recently and it is amazing, same as your new one. I do have a question: When scrolling through frequencies, specifically at 21,399 to 21,400 I hear a audio pop and a relay click. There are other locations like 21,299-21,300 . This is also true on the other bands in other locations on the dial. I am assuming it is switching band pass filters or AGC, or Attenuator? I am not sure. Is this normal or should I be returning the radio? Other than that it works amazingly.
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie2 ай бұрын
HA! so if your tuner is on then you get the pops and clicks. If it is off then no pops and clicks. Its likely the tuner going through the tuned spots. @temporarilyoffline helped me discover this. In case anyone else reads the comments and wants to know the answer.

I've been following your channel for a long time and with great interest, both for the ideas for portable antennas and for the description of the places where you satisfy your hunger afterwards! While watching your latest video, the following question occurred to me: Which setup has the better performance on the 10m band, 17' telescope with tuner vs. resonant antenna tuned to 10m, more metal in the air with loss due to tuner vs. resonant, much shorter antenna? Could you do an A - B test? I would be curious to see the result. 73s, HB9MTN, Ed
