@@cdarbo9818 My grandmother was perpetually crocheting baby sacques. Every baby in the extended family got swaddled in one of her creations -- always yellow or green, as gender-testing and ultrasound weren't around then. Now, when I say "extended family," I mean it in the Southern sense. It includes, but is not limited to, second cousins once removed, babies of women from church, and her longtime maid's great-grandbaby. I wonder how many she made, and how many are being worn by the descendants of the original recipients?

One of the most valuable things I own is this cheap little doll in this massive Scarlett O’Hara style dress that my aunt crocheted for me. I do not like dolls all that much and I don’t think I’ve worn a dress since I was 10. It’s not to my taste at all but I love that thing because it took her six months to make it and she did it because I was in the hospital and she wanted to make me feel better. What about all of those years before she came out of the closet where she was "Daddy's Girl" and he did all of the things that made him a dad??? To the OP those don't seem to count. It's only "what are you doing for me now???" What an entitled C*nt she is. The father didn't like her fiance or her lifestyle and he is called horrible names and homophobic. Guess what, people are not homophobic because they don't agree with a Gay or Bi-Sexual lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with not liking it, not agreeing with it, or not supporting it. If the OP's fiance was a dude and the father didn't like him, nobody would think twice about it. I am tired of hearing about people shoving things like who they sleep with down other people's throats and if they don't like it, they are attacked for it. My mum made most of our clothes. My little sisters medications and therapies cost a lot of money, dad had two jobs, mum had a part-time job, as she needed to be able to take my sister to appointments etc. We were very lucky, as mum use to be a tailoress, and she use to make men's suits, and she made clothes that looked store bought, but, they couldn't be bought anywhere. We also had a family friend, who worked in a clothing factory, and, she use to give us the factory seconds, sometimes the stripes/pattern didn't line up etc, all perfectly good clothes, which included underwear. That's also when I found out, that often these clothing factories made clothes for several brands, they just had the labels for each brand to attach to the clothing, so often buying the more expensive clothing was a waste, especially because the quality was exactly the same, no matter the brand. This was way back in the 60's and 70's, so I'm not sure if that's what still happens. Mum always made the clothes with love, she even made my wedding dress, it took her four and a half hours to sew the hem by hand.

My mum also used to sew clothes for us when we were younger, not because of financial reasons, but because that's how she grew up and liked it. She stopped as she no longer has time, but my sister now sews her own stuff sometimes and curtains. I'm not allowed to use a sewing machine because they're all afraid of me ruining things, but I hand-sew. Lol. Crafting your own clothes or clothes for loved ones is amazing and requires such hard work.

What? I got tears in my eyes when I heard the last story. That is just so respectful. Op‘s Mil had not much but she made the effort and threw that made a priceless thing. I remember when I was young and my Mother bought me a whole new bedset, sheets, pillowcases and a comforter. She did this because a single pillowcase my Grandmother had embroidered had gone missing during a massive laundry marathon which included the laundry of someone moving out and a guest leaving. It still didn't make up for it. What I wouldn't give to have that pillowcase back (and Grandma's Potatoe salad recipe) back. I still plant my Grandma's favorite flowers around my house. One set of gifts was effort & love, and the other was just money thrown at the issue. So set of gifts has a known cash value and the other is priceless.

Story 2 brought back memories of my mum being so upset at being the poorer grandparent compared to my brother in laws family. They would spoil my niece and nephew with material goods… cheap plastic stuff from China. My sister and I reassured mum that the kids would remember the skills she taught them, the toys and clothes she made them. She tearfully accepted our reassurances but we never thought she truly believed us. My nephew is now 19, my niece 16. He regularly takes Grandma out to lunch… he even took her to get her first ever tattoo… a frog… and he surprised her by asking for the same image to be tattooed on his thigh… “so that a part of Grandma will always be with me”. Both my niece and nephew have memory boxes… in which they put something precious each year…. inside is a treasure trove of the stuff mum has made them over the years… the felt 1st Christmas tree ornaments, a button from the button game she made and played with them… even chewed and much loved sock puppets. There is nothing in either box from the other grandparents, because nothing given by them ever meant anything. The kids remember playing with my mum, learning how to grow fruit and veg… and picking and eating the produce… making sock puppets… memories which genuinely meant everything! Their other grandparents ? … they went low contact about 2 years ago, after they felt slighted by the “lack of appreciation” for all the age inappropriate, expensive (and unwanted) plastic stuff they had posted to them for Christmas.

The only items kept from my childhood were handmade dresses from my mother and handmade dolls from my grandmothers. In my own life, I've gone through some financial hardships. One Christmas, I didn't have money to buy gifts. I made everyone big boxes of homemade cookies and candies because baking ingredients are cheap. My family loved them and now request them every year. Fathers can sometimes be capable of the most unexpected changes of heart imaginable. Mine is a screamer. He always had a very short fuse and exploded in hour long screaming fits over the smallest things. Due to his impatience, he never really taught me things correctly and just shoved me aside when I wasn't fast enough or wouldn't immediately get something. I still struggle with learned helplessness as a result. When I moved out, I expected of him to be the least caring about it. But it actually deeply affected him. Now that my life is falling apart, he's willing to do just about anything to rescue me and give me back all the stability I lost. He showed some real empathy for my situation and acknowledges I worked incredibly hard to make it by myself. I'm honestly floored. While I don't think the main problem of constant screaming has been resolved and I still doubt he learned patience, his recent behavior makes me see him in a different light and I have hope that things with him will eventually get better.

Yes. I gave my son a normal name after his father and grandma tried to force a traditional family name on him. His father had it for his first name and hated it, always going by his middle name. Why would you want him to go through that too? He had no answer. There wasn't even any good reason for the name. It was because they were vaguely related to the wright brothers. Yep. They wanted his first name to be wright. Ridiculous. Old fashioned clout chasing. Smh.

My first and middle name are combinations of names from family members I never even met, I didn't care much at first but over time it started to feel like I was just a tribute to people I never knew and as if I was supposed to be like them, it was especially bad when I went and changed it (socially, not legally yet) and my mom got _incredibly_ defensive/offended about it. Story 1 update made me so happy 🖤💜. I'm so glad things worked out with OP, her now wife, and her family. Story 3 - Well done to OP for standing up to his crappy parents and sticking up for his wife and MIL. Finally we have a story with a spouse who sticks up for their significant other! Love, time and effort will always be far more valuable than money. An expensive gift is a nice gesture, but will never beat the love and effort that goes into something handmade. I wish I had the talent and skill to handmake things. Story 2, my neighbours rescue dog was called Stanford. The sister sounds insufferable and exhausting. Looking down on people because they don't have same level of education or money is sad. Sister might feel superior, but she isn't better than anyone. Life isn't a competition, acting like it is a contest to "make it" is extremely immature.

Recently my adult daughter talked with her friend and I about how much she loved the clothes I made her, when she was young. The whole experience of fabric shopping and chosing whether she wanted shorts or a dress, ect and having clothes that actually fit (she was lanky so I often had to alter her clothes or buy things that had adjustable waist bands). Taking the time to make things makes them special. OP's parents are AH for what they did to the MIL. OP did do something drastic by returning their gifts, but I am not sure they would have understood just being talked to.

I loved so many clothes for the new wave fashion with the neon colors made by my aunts and a seamstresses friend of the family. My friends always tight we got those from high end shops.
