The real hero of this movie is Coco. She fought against her dementia, until her Papa was the only memory she held onto. She kept him alive, in the afterlife, when everyone else forgot him. And by sharing his stories, at the end, she ensured he would not be forgotten for generations to follow. One of my best friend's Mother died of Dementia. I was with her when her Mother forgot her for the first time and asked who she was. It is a devastating disease that hurts the family more than the victim of it. You have to watch your loved one dwindle away and lose everything that made them who they are. So Coco remembering her daughter and calling her name was a fantastic gift to her. At least one last happy memory of her Mother.

A fun detail I always like to point out: When the family rejected music because of Hector, they learned to make shoes. Hector is barefoot throughout the entire movie, until he walks across the petal bridge with the family who has forgiven and taken him back, shown by making him a pair of shoes, the mark of the Rivera family.

I have a Xolo Dog as well. When talking to people about her I say. "Have you seen Coco?....She's the same dog as Dante." She has the tongue that hangs out and everything. It's a bit of a quirk of their breed because they are missing there side teeth so the tongue kinda slips free LOL. . I remember watching this in theaters and the eruption of muffled giggles from the adults when they were teasing Hector about how he died. (I live in a predominantly Mexican community.) Because Chorizo is a sausage, the insult was 2 fold, that he died by choking...on sausage. Which most of us know the euphemism. Uncertain if Pixar was aware of that little joke or if it was just a wild coincidence.

Actually this (Día De Los Muertos) is completely UNRELATED to Halloween and both holidays have absolutely NOTHING to do with one another. This -- Day of the Death -- is not supposed to be scary, but instead a celebration of all the loved ones who have passed way. Loved the reaction, though... keep up the good work!
@TheDarkSideOfYouSoul

Well... Completely unrelated... There are related, not the same, but related. Both, Halloween and Día de Muertos are a mix of pagan and christian celebrations, Halloween it's the combination of Celtic and christian Holliday (All Hollows Eve and Samhain) and Día de Muertos Is the same, A catholic celebration with other pre-hispanic celebrations I told that as a Mexican born and rise in México... I'm still in México. The difference is that in Halloween the costumes are to fool the spirits, to scare them, and in México we welcome the spirits of our people.

"About halfway through, I asked myself Am I enjoying this?" Such a great observation. Cheech says, "You gotta earn it." and there is a point where the audience has to decide if they want to hang out to the end because of the characters in the film. For those who seek closure for The Riveras, they get that series of emotional cataclysms.

Oh man, I love this movie and seeing people react to it. It is very well made and does a good job at representing our current culture! Just thought I’d drop some extra cultural context to explain some things! -Dia de los muertos is not Halloween and has no correlation to it. It is a very joyous and bright holiday that celebrates the lives of the people we’ve lost and is based on the idea that only on these days can our family visit us from beyond the grave. In fact, most of us get pretty upset at it being compared to Halloween because the only similarity is a vague theme of death and the close dates (Ddlm is actually 2 days, November 1st and 2nd). “Ofrendas” or offerings in English are usually left on altars with food and things the deceased like as way to welcome the spirits and celebrate with them. It is a way to keep them alive through memory. To be left off an ofrenda on purpose is kind of a big insult as it means the person thinks you are better off forgotten which is why Miguel’s family reacted the way they did when he said he didn’t care if he was on it. -Alebrijes are usually handmade and hand painted statues of mythological animals made from different existing animal parts and sometimes just of actual animals we see day to day. I believe they originated from one guy, an artist who kept seeing the animals in dreams and recreated them in his art, this practice would then go to become a big part of modern Mexican culture. Because they come from dreams, many believe them to be spirit guides. -The type of dog Dante is also plays into him being a spirit guide as it is a historical legend that Xoloitzcuintli guide spirits from our world into the next. -Frida Kahlo, who you see a few times in the movie is a famous Mexican painter who made a plethora of self portraits with very odd and meaningful symbolism. A lot of her art was also based on the grief she suffered through in life which is why her segment is the way it is in the movie. -“La chancla” or the flip flop is in fact a cultural thing, usually used to discipline naughty kids. Some women are just crazy good at wielding it. -Finally, the reason Abuelita from Encanto and this Abuela are so similar is because a lot of Hispanics go through generational trauma. Generational trauma happens when something heavily and negatively impacts a persons life and they then go on to pass that fear or a way of teaching related to that fear to their children, and those children pass it on to their children, so on and so on. A lot of our ancestors went through some horrible things and so now that burden has come down to us. It’s the source of a lot of pain that comes from a good place and creates familial conflict in cultures that are very centered around family, thus being a big part of a lot of our stories. Especially for the people of my generation who are just now getting into the animated movie business. Turning red isn’t based on a Hispanic culture but it is also another good example of this topic.

The Idea of this movie pretty much plays entirely on the saying : "YOu are only truly dead, when no one remembers you" That's how it goes here. As long as you are remembered, you will continue to be. But if the world forgets you exist.. well, then you have truly stopped existing. When all your footprints have been erased, it's as if you have never been there at all. It is a bit of an existential crisis, but there is also the other end: Live a good life, live with integrity, so that people remember you long after you are gone. Let your ife touch many peoples life, and you will not be forgotten

I can understand Miguel being not a scared. It is important to understand that Dia de los Muertis is _not_ Hlloweeen, even if they have been put together in recent years. While both have the Idea that it is a night were the veil between life an death is thinnest, the connotation is completly different. All hallowes Even (Halloween) was a night were the daed and all sorts of mosters and demons could cross over to our world and it was seen as a terrifying and unnatural thing, which is why people Put out scary lanters and hung masks from their doors to scare away the spirits. Die de los muertos is a day of rememebering those that have passed on and feeling close to them again. it is a hopeful celebration of the fact that death is not the end of love. People put out food and candles to _invite_ the spirits of their ancestors to come to them. So to Miguel, the Spirit of de la Cruz would not be scary, it would be benevolent.

But i think he didn't only get homesick, he also started to realize that it wasn't gonna happen. Hectors songs were amazing, but de la Cruz was clearly the stage persona. Hector, I think realized that maybe, music couldn't bring his family the success they needed. So he was ready to give it up, go home and get a more stable job, just to be with his family
