I always like to talk about how I got my grandpa's nose, the most distinctive nose in the family. Growing up, it bothered me in the way that it didn't look like the girls around me in its size and slope and shape. Today, however, I am aware of the fact that my nose is a tool for smelling, and to fixate on its curvature and way of being is to waste the precious time I have on this earth that could have been used for something much more important- like building the lego taj mahal.

I think it also comes From how men make women feel if “they’re not pretty” and were not seen as worthy of respect, decency or kindness. So a lot of woman crave that incessant need to be pretty which in turn is the incessant need to be respected.

her point about beauty showing on people is so true. When I look at my friends, to me they are so so beautiful, their smiles and their laughs are so beautiful, I could look at them forever and never tire of it. But never have I once looked at them and examined them with conventional beautiful standards, like oh, she doesn't have this nose or clear skin, she doesn't have these teeth that makes them not beautiful - no. When I see their face they are so beautiful and it's all I can see. I don't know why we don't grant ourselves that kind of attitude, that kindness.

Ok I get that you’re neurodivergent, and maybe this wasn’t immediately obvious to you, but I don’t think when they say that’s all they can see, that they mean it in the complete literal sense. Obviously everyone notices people’s features. If you were to never realise when your friend got a face transplant, I’d be a bit concerned (unless you were blind). But when you look at them on a day to day, and their very face brings you joy or that you think you could stare at them all day long, you don’t think about whether they’re pretty, they’re just beautiful to you. And I think that’s the concept the comment meant. It’s not the literal meaning of ‘that’s all I can see’, it’s implied coz of context that it means this in terms of not seeing their prettyness

Farah I’m a guy revert Muslim who lives in a Latino family household. All my life I’ve felt pressured from family to flaunt beauty if we have it and hide our flaws me and my parents are considered “conventionally” attractive. (I’m the only Muslim in the family) and sometimes I’d give into it what they recommend to attract attention. Today I was about to go to the mosque trying to enhance how I look but after you saying you love how people love your character when you’re speaking. Helps me remember when I’m talking to the kids about Islam, and have the best time. My beauty didn’t help them listen but when I’m just me, they sit down and pay attention. That’s better than anything. I swapped and got my nice baggy cloths that I love wearing and about to head there now in sha Allah thanks for the reminder Farah.

Wearing perfume, nice and clean clothing, good hairstyle etc. is part of cleanliness in Islam and is also sunnah. It's recommended to take care of your appearance brother, just be careful not to become obsessive about it and overdo it, and don't do it with the intention of attracting women's attention (but if you're married, of course it's halal to want to look good for your wife). Do it for sunnah and your faith :)

If people think youre pretty they wont take you seriously. Because if you have the looks but you also possess a brain and real charm and charisma, people immediately are intimidated by you and will have liked you better if you were stupid or shallow because its easier to get their way or get away with things. No one takes your pain seriously cuz people see you and assume your looks must grant you everything you desire. I have experienced this but also i see it in many women like for example of a big icon- Marylin Monroe, she was beautiful but was also extremely talented intelligent charming and kind. She was too complex for people, so it was easier for them to exist with themselves if she was just a dumb blonde and to this day people are hell bent on tarnishing the true legacy of who she was.

I felt this deeply. I was a child being told I was ugly. At the time, it really impacted my mental health and self-esteem. Self-love wasn't taught by my school and parents. Emphasis on "wanting to be pretty", I wanted to feel pretty. I hope people will soon realize that that feeling can only come from you. No amount of people telling you "you're pretty" could ever make you feel that way, you gotta love yourself as you are. I think the idea of being "beautiful" is very much worse now for children, I wish I had this video as a kid and then maybe I would've treated myself better lol, great video!!

As a white girl with a big nose can I just politely and briefly say that big noses are also a ‘white person feature’ (because Europe is a cold place so our ancestors needed bigger noses that would warm up the air we breathe so that it wouldn’t be cold/ hurt when it hit our lungs). I love this video and everything that’s said in it and I’m not trying to take away from it at all, but hating my big nose whilst also hearing over the years things like “it’s okay not to have Eurocentric beauty standards” and “I’m proud of my ethnic nose” and, as said in this video, “fixing my nose to look like a white girl’s nose” just kind of made me feel like I had no reason to be proud of my nose because I’m just white and my nose is just big and that’s that. (I do understand that those messages are important for non-white people who struggle with appearance and try to fit in with society’s beauty standards and in that way I do definitely support them.) But these Eurocentric beauty standards are not even European, white people have very thin lips, asymmetrical faces and big noses, many white celebrities who don’t have these features have had work done. My point is, don’t anyone try to follow so- called ‘European beauty standards’ because even us Europeans don’t fit into them and if you’re a white girl with a big nose and you feel like you don’t have a reason to be proud of it, be proud of it because it’s a part of you. (I apologise if this wasn’t the time or place for this message, I understand this isn’t what the video was about necessarily, I just thought I’d comment to help anyone who had the same insecurity and experience as me and I’m not trying to take away from anyone else’s experience who is not the same as mine 💗.)

Interesting that you said this. I absolutely have "brown girl" features but there are also plenty of Pakistani women who are born with the so-called Caucasian looking nose sharp,pointy, thin etc. Defined jaw lines, high cheek bones, etc these are all Pakistani features as well but I didn't get any of those things. I was never trying to look like a white girl I was comparing myself to my fellow Pakistanis and I would question well why didn't I look like this? It's never really been about wanting to "look white" it's been wanting to have certain features that I've seen in all races which I considered pretty. I have actually always loved that I looked exotic but again I would just be a bit fixated on certain little things namely the high cheek bones that defined jaw line. I never saw certain features as belonging the only one race especially the whole nose thing

Okay but even your comment isn’t entirely accurate, because not every European has specific features. Slope noses, straight noses, arched noses. Thin lips, small lips, big lips. High cheekbones, low cheekbones. High brow low brow. Almond eyes wide eyes. Asymmetrical or “symmetrical”. Freckles or no freckles. These features exist in mostly all races. Maybe some have majority of one feature than other, but even the presence of a few outliers makes a difference. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!!! We are all unique. Our features are OURS and cannot be chalked up to being in one group as so many other groups may have that feature that is attributed to one singular one. The only group our features should have are OUR UNIQUE SELVES! Not to mention, my belief is that our physical appearance is not our true self. Our projections only exist to serve the purpose of recognization. Our faces are all unique so that our brains associate each others different selves with different bodies/forms, that way we don’t associate other selves/forms/souls as others. We are unique because our experiences are different than EVERYONE else’s, no matter the similarities, we all have our differences and that is beautiful. We are literally designed to recognized the differences in others…and differences are beautiful, they are what make people PEOPLE!!! Okay I’m done 😊

Im a revert muslim and fell into the fashionistahs hijabs too. I stopped following them the more i learned about islam and focused on my deen, i now follow the muslims that are from bangledish and malaysia, niqab wearing hijabis. ❣️ I also grew up in the west and was considered " pretty" by beauty standards, but it didnt gain me the right attention. assalamu alaykum farah i love your videos,as an italian revert I just want to say, these eurocentric beauty standards are extremely hard to fit into - even as white person , my nose is personally straight and I remember feeling teased for not having a curved nose (like the tiktok nose.) I even considered rhinoplasty before I realized I had an Italian nose with Irish features which are looked down upon by English people. It’s really terrible and honestly your nose is so beautiful mashallah truly, it makes me so sad that we must call them imperfect when they are perfect. I've been spending too much time on Insta lately and I've noticed that almost every girl looks flawless and so pretty that I started to question myself and my beauty. For the first time in my life I put full makeup on, to keep up with those girls, I wanted to see my beauty to not feel any less. But you reminded me of the actual things we need to take care of, our soul, heart and character. This is what makes us pretty. At the end we will all eventually lose our physical beauty. Farah your humour is killing me, I've come across your videos bedore but it's been a while since the last time I watched one. You have such a gift for speaking and holding people's attention. You also present ideas in a linear manner without even putting any effort in it. I really admire it when people are able to speak in a fun and articulate manner, I'm always all over the place but looking to improve that. The past few years my confidence has really gone down. I don't like my body or my face and I constantly compare myself to all these girls around me that look effortlessly beautiful. I always felt like this but now it's to an unhealthy extent. I can't really shake the feeling that as women we tend to appreciate beauty in a manner different from men. We pay attention to the details and love to pick and match colors, patterns, textures. There is men like that too but it's super rare in my experience at least. When beauty is about creativity and appreciation, it's so fun. In terms of fashion, I appreciate it so much when women combine elements of their culture (or even different cultures that they appreciate) and their personal style and favorite colors. It feels amazing when you (have the financial ability to) start picking your clothes to match your skin tone and characteristics instead of trying to match the style of this and that influencer. Makeup is enjoyable if you dont make it about changing your whole face with it. I kid you not, I try to find pictures for lipstick application on small lips (mine are like yours for example) and I either cant find any examples or it's overlining to the heavens. Same goes for a lot of things, you just have to do things for yourself and maybe if you want share it with other girls who are looking for the same tips. I have wanted to start my own youtube channel where I do quiet vlogs and book reviews and maybe language learning content and I dont because every time I try to film, I hate how my face looks on camera. I dont mind it half as much in real life and I often go out "bare faced" but God when I see myself in pictures or videos I feel embarrassed. We girls really have to stop being afraid of putting ourselves out there just because we don't look a certain way. I reverted to Islam a year ago. Im not a hijabi and can't be cause i come from a racist christian country in the balkans but ive been thinking about starting to wear a mantilla (square headscarf) that is more acceptable culturally and won't attract as much negative attention.

Farah, this is a wonderful video format. It is one thing to be told by someone who has put a great deal of effort into their appearance that only what is on the inside really matters, but it is quite another to receive this same message so earnestly at 4am from someone who has made a point just to show up as they are. You are truly beautiful, and you are a gift to us all. I am a Christian in the US, and you have reminded me of how in my own community, we even have songs about coming to worship “as you are,” yet for so long the expectation has been to get cleaned up not only in appearance but also in actions and spirit before coming to church. So many people avoid church because they feel they are not good enough. This should not be the case. This is a failure of us Christians to live in accordance with Jesus’s teachings. It goes to show that even when a religion is dominant in the culture, the culture can still harmfully distract us from what we know to be true and right. When you were talking about hijabi fashionistas, I thought of how I feel pressure to make myself better conform to society’s beauty standards, though I wish I didn’t care so much. What you said about sunsets sounds a lot like something Jesus said in Matthew 6 about how we don’t need to worry, because God makes the lilies beautiful and the lilies don’t need to change their appearance, so surely we are the same way. You speak good, very old wisdom. You’re completely right that we have much more important things to do than worry about being pretty. May you go and do those things, always accompanied by confidence and contentment.
