Veterans who receive VA disability benefits will not have to report this income when filing their federal taxes for 2023. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does not require veterans to include VA disability as part of their taxable income. The IRS treats VA disability benefits are not considered tax-reportable earned income. This means that your total gross income will not include any money received in the form of a VA disability benefit.

It's not just non-taxable: it's non-reportable. There is no "special form," there is no "line" on the 1040 to list it. It's not included in "Other income." I've been preparing taxes since 2002 (when I ran the Tax Assistance Office, Naval Station San Diego). What this man is telling you is true now, has always been, and always will be.

Non-reportable at the federal level, or as income for tax purposes at the state level. But there are states that illegally require you to disclose for other purposes, like when applying for things like food stamps, low income housing, and child support (whether giving or receiving)

I am a caregiver and I'm trying to help my client get to his 100% rating, or stay at his 70% & then apply for unemployable individual benefits, or the aid and attendance (i can't remember been so many programs i read into) and they stated that you can only make a certain amount of income, including assets. So when I'm applying for those benefits, I don't need to report his va disability income? I'm trying to help him the best I can. He's been dealing with this since 2007, they denied him and then he just gave up because he didn't know to stay on their butts 😔 he's been at 70% all along and has to pay for caregiving daily.

It shouldn't count toward ANYTHING... And I think unemployable veterans should AUTOMATICALLY get SSDI/SSI instead of being forced to fight for it. Food stamps, too, for some now bc food costs too much for many to afford when they are done paying bills these days. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE 🥰

In the state of Michigan, if you apply for the homestead tax credit, you are required to disclose your va benefit amount because it's not based on taxable income but based on total household resources. So, if you don't qualify for certain credits in your state, it is not necessary to add your VA C&P benefits.

What annoys me is other organizations like for Medicaid make you put that as income. They've even added it to the income form in parenthesis: Veterans Benefits. So if takes you over the income limit. Frustrating.

Just got back from the VA I filed for SMC-K for my left eye (Only light perception) and added some personal statements for other claims. I also found out that all 4 of my initial service connected claims are marked as Static! Check your state laws. I was able to contact my county PVA, Property Value Assessment, I provided them with my award letter and receive the discount that way.
