The nuts are welded on to the bolt you can't turn them.

In an early shot you can see how many threads are left between the bolt head and the casing, so if you tighten the bolt head up to the casing, the nails can move more than half an inch closer to the casing without needing to line up with the holes - probably enough to open the door.
