Rice got moved to the 8 because Arteta didn’t like his ability to drop in and get the team ticking. It’s a bery specific role one that Mainoo is more suited to with his technical ability in tight areas and composure. Its not about playing the best player in the position, it’s about playing the best player for the role… we need a 100 touch per game man to get us ticking and Mainoo profile fits it much better.

It's the same formation (and most of the same players) who thrashed Senegal two years ago. The one really big difference is that Shaw was fit and playing at LB instead of Trippier. That made a huge difference, as Shaw's runs made the left flank work properly. The other significant difference is that Henderson played alongside Rice in midfield (versus TAA), and he was always rock solid as well as a natural leader on the pitch.

Just find it really difficult to get my head around why everyone in England seems to be screaming for Foden to play as a 10 and Bellingham as an 8, but the manager can't see it, and would rather play Gallagher and Rice in midfield, leaving Foden on the left. I just don't get why he would do this, because the backlash from the media and the public, if it's another bad performance, will be absolutely brutal.

Here's my list of issues... Why take Shaw? What a ridiculous decision. He's still injured, not training fully and has no match fitness (and won't for the life of the tournament). Shoehorning two extra RB's into the team, one as a makeshift CM and another as a makeshift LB. Shoehorning Foden onto the left wing, leaving no naturally left-footed player in the starting XI. Complete lack of effective pressing off the ball. Everyone crowding the 10 role. Sideways and backward passes aplenty. Very few forward runs or penetrating passes... It's insane, just insane. Meanwhile, on the bench are players who fix all these issues quite naturally... without instruction. Here, FA... I'll do the job for 10% of Gareth's pay (£490k instead of 4.9 million). And here's the best starting XI for free... 4.3.3 (flat midfield). Pickford, Tyrick Mitchell, Branthwaite, Stones, Walker, Rice, Wharton, Bellingham, Gordon, Palmer, Kane Trent, Gallagher, Grealish, Foden and Watkins as impact subs.
