A VINTAGE-LOVER has spent $50,000 transforming her 'fixer-upper' home into a 1950s timewarp. From an early age, Rochelle, 26, from Phoenix, Arizona, has been interested in all things retro. Some of her happiest childhood memories are of trawling the aisles of antique stores with her mother. And as an adult, her love of the past continued to grow. In 2018, she and her husband Matt bought their first home together. The property had been built in 1957, but remodelled in the 1970s. Rochelle then spent the next 18 months - and $50,000 - restoring it to its original glory. Now, every appliance and piece of furniture in her home is vintage - as is her entire wardrobe. She concluded: "I would say I'm obsessed with vintage. It might be a little crazy, but it's fun."

Anyone who thinks you are racist just because you love vintage stuff just doesn’t get it. I’m obsessed with the 1950’s as well and I’m a black man but I’m not blind to what was going on back then and I don’t agree with what was going on back then either it’s about the style and fashion not their values. I'd hate to play the Devil's Advocate, but it was those very political & social values that enabled the 50s to have that culture and lifestyle that is so revered. A homogeneous population that is rooted in European values is what gave the 50s its feel and a diverse, multicultural population would have eliminated that.

@@theww2girl141 Romaticizing periods of time purely based on aesthetics is something most non-white people cant do. Aesthetics are informed by politics in every period of history. For example, during Reconstruction white supremacists wore red shirts to symbolize their commitment to white supremacy. Could someone romanticize the red shirt late 1800s aesthetics without the inherent racism in that aesthetic choice? No. This is true of all history. White people just dont understand this concept very well cause there isnt much in recent history where they were oppressed. The only real exception is Poles, Jews, Slavs, and Romani perception of white people who romanticize the aesthetics of Nazi era Germany. 50s fashion is representative of 50s politics, period.

I think this is SO cool because it's just SO unique and it takes true passion and dedication to live this lifestyle because it's "old." I also love vintage particularly the late 60's, 70's and early 80's but primarily as it relates to fashion. Nevertheless, I think it's unfortunate that there are people who make that assumption of her political views based on the lifestyle era she lives in. There happens to be a KZbinr by the name of Sewrena, who also lives the vintage lifestyle from house to home through and through for 1950s into the 60's. She sews her own vintage inspired clothing too. She is a Black woman. And there was a comment made asking if "she realise how life was for black people in that time period..." as though blacks didn't enjoy or continue to live comfortably in their own communities or as though she should abandon her personal taste, style, and lifestyle preference because of the portrayal of her "accepting" the mass view on politics and values of that era. Live and let live is what I think people should consider. What's for someone else doesn't have to be for you and what's for you doesn't have to be for the next person. I don't understand how or why people make some things much bigger than it is.

I would consider doing yearly blood tests for lead levels. When my daughter was a baby her levels came back elevated due to me collecting vintage items.

I'm responding to Angela Barnett (though I can't see your comment here for some reason): I completely PURGED my home of anything vintage since this was my baby and lead is very damaging, especially to the development of small children. I got her yearly blood draws until it went back to undetected (it was undetected after the first year but I do them when I fear she has had more contact). We had beautiful walnut mid century furniture everywhere, but I believe the main culprits were the pyrex, the ceramic glazed items, and brass handles on the furniture. I suggest following Tamara Rubin (aka Lead Safe Mama). She has an extensive blog and helpful resources.

Love all the vintage memorabilia you have! You and your clothes are just stunning! Love the car as well. I love vintage clothes and I’m a Black woman. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive so the fact the fact that you love vintage and people equating it with racism is soo ABSURD🙄. You can like things without liking the societal norms and mores of that era. People are so dumb. Keep doing you girl! You have people out here that appreciate it. If you ever do a KZbin page I’d be one of the first to subscribe ♥️

I love the fifties for its fashion, food, and fun things like the jukebox and even furniture. Most of my designs as a fashion student follow design lines from the 1400s to the 1950s. I also agree with when she said “Vintage Style, not vintage values” which is super important when doing anything historical.

I (sarcastically) like the “oh, you love the ‘50s, therefore you’re racist” remark. I’d love to hear the mental gymnastics of a thought process someone with that opinion would have to do in their head to come to that conclusion. There have been racist people throughout history all the way up to and, sadly, including today. With that logic, anyone who’s a “fan” of any period of time is racist. You like living in modern times with modern amenities? You’re racist.

It's the same kind of logic of "You like Harry Potter? You're going to see the new Fantastic Beasts? Therefore you support JK and are also a transphobe". People are just looking to start a fight.

I'm so numb to the "you're racist" nonsense. It's actually not helping but hindering their whole "movement" everything is racist now so therefore nothing is racist and I don't care anymore.

This has been my life in this community/sub culture since the late 80's when in my mid teens. Completely normal to me. Most people do not understand you do not have to be a total luddite living every true element of an era to be into it. My husband and I love the aesthetics. 'Authentic' decor in home (with emphasis on things such as appliances complying to modern health, safety and compliance code. We have a modern 2 person infrared sauna and I love it), clothes, music, popular culture, cars etc. We have also been influenced by the times we have grown up and lived through. It's all fun and it's what makes you feel joy in living a certain way. The beauty is, we can pick and choose and leave the ugly side of the era out of our life. Live and let live and reserve what you think is your right to judge just because you don't get it and you think we don't fit in mainstream society how you think we should. Save us all from the conformists out there! And FYI, the global community of '50's lifestylers' is actually pretty substantial and diverse.

I’m also most drawn to the 50’s. I agree - vintage style not values. I want everything! The house and the car! This is what I aspire to be and she sounds awesome! Family influence is a powerful thing. My obsession with antiquing started when I was little too when my grandma would take me to estate sales. I also had a lot of influence as my father watched old movies on TCM and played the oldies music station as well as his love for vintage cars.

Anyone who says people who like vintage are racists are discrediting all the people who fought for political change during that time. Bernie Sanders grew up in the 50s, not a racist. Martin Luther King Jr. was alive and active in the 50s. Betty White was a young woman in her 30s during the 50s, and she was known as a defender of diversity and inclusion. There have always been people fighting for what's right, in every era imaginable. Don't forget them.

Again, I always wonder what these young folks do for a living. To have already accumulated a bunch of expensive objects (clothing, make up, interiors, cameras etc) by their early 20s really intrigues me. And not this lady in particular, but so many in these hipster profile videos live alone or are straight out of art school etc. WOW! Nice for some.
