I've always thought this was a very underrated Partridge Family song. It's one of my favorites from their first LP. The soaring vocals on it are great. It's a shame it only appeared in one episode - and abbreviated at that. It's GREAT that you creatively put the entire song with additional footage. Way to go!

Definitely one of the best Mann/Weil songs from their catalogue. Great melody and great studio musicians. I make no bones about how much I love glossy well produced pop of the 60's 70's and 80's. The Partridge Family had the top writers and musicians of that era.

Mark, I have to tell you, every time I play this clip and read your tribute to your friend, I cry. Can't say enough how it touches me on so many levels. I was born the same year as your friend, I was a Partridge geek -- had all the LPs and played "Brown Eyes" on the piano at my 6th grade recital). I've let a lot of my adult life slip by without sharing my musical gifts with the world, and that's about to change. Thanks both to you, Mark, and to PF4ever for posting this great song.

This was always a FANTASTIC SONG! The way this song slides into the chorus is phenomenal ("settle up before I settle down"...just love that). And then the chorus itself is great. Easily The Partridge Family's best song. Thanks so much for this.

Also note "to be lovers" David does sing in the song, but only at midpoint. When they found out he can sing, this song was a testing point. He sings the part "a shadow's tree that's branches will not grow. A beautiful valley filled with sand." Then it goes back to Bahler's vocal. "I'm on the road was in 2 episodes, this one and the episode starring Ray Bolger.

What can I say that hasn't already been said here? This is beautiful, bouncy pop music at its exuberant best. I was 12 when the Partridge Family TV show debuted, and this song made me fall in love with the music and the series. I completely share PrincePurple's delight with the way the lyric "...to settle up before I settle down..." takes the chorus soaring off into the clouds. A brilliant piece of ear candy.

Tom and John Bahler did tons of back-up singing for various artists, and fronted a sort-lived Summer of Love group called "The Love Generation" in 67-68. Had only one fair-sized hit, "Groovy Summertime", but released 3 albums. By the way, Chris #1 was sure a cutie!

Since songs were produced by Wes Ferrell, this song was supposed to be recorded by the Cowsills (They were suppose to be the cast in the series). Wes produced several Cowsills recordings. This recording doesn't include David Cassidy in the vocal. It was finished before they discovered David can sing. (note the staged recording session). Great song, great production.

Hello, I knew our David , he was under great amount of stress! He tried , to be the sunshine boy every one knew! But it was very hard to keep it up always! "No one is perfect all the time! And also, It's been told , David didn't get the complete work up he really needed! I guessed, him trying to pay his bills, all that was in his, he really didn't have the time ! He had to tour! And every thing asked of him! Then we all know by, he was in a very stressful situation, in the marriage he chose ,😢 he was so lonely 😢 I wish God had brought him what he really needed 😢 I will for ever pray for his soul, pray for his whole family's personal pain they feel and go through. I admire their strength ❤ I love them all❤ always ❤ I PRAY ALL THE TIME, GOD KEEP THEM ALL SO CLOSEST TO HIS HEART AND SWEET ARMS ❤ AND WITH ALL THAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS WORLD NOW, BE SAFE ❤ I LOVE YOU ALL ,ALWAYS ❤MARY

I recently discovered after having and listening to the "The Patridge Family Album" after all these years that this was one of the songs that was actually MONO. i coudn't believe it. I guess it was so expertly recorded that with the masterfully layered vocals that I never noticed until I got the CD 30 years later. What I'd like to know is if the DVD version of this song that I assume this video is taken from is in stereo?

Cassidy did have a very good voice, but that's not him on this song. In the very early episodes, the producers didn't realize his abilities, so the Bahler Brothers sang lead. This is stated in the Partridge Family Album (a great book, if you're a fan, BTW). David also doesn't sing lead on "To Be Lovers" and "I Really Want To Know You". And honestly, if you really listen, this doesn't sound anything like Cassidy.

Its a catchy pop song...but i'st what the Partridge Family would have sounded like if they hadn't had David singing lead vocals. It has a very generic pop sound. Its David Cassidy's vocals that gave the Partridge Family their unique sound.
