At the time it came out, I loved Hysteria. I thought it was one of the greatest hard rock albums I ever heard with so many hits/singles. However, as time has progressed, this album has lost so much stature with me. I don't know what the hell I was thinking at the time it came out. Chalk it up to being young and stupid. I don't care if it sold 20 million copies....... Give me High N Dry any day of the week. That, to me, is their finest album.

@@haroldsutton9170 It's on my list...haha..I actually did a "In Defense of " video for the Black Album but it was really more about how much it sold and how it launched them to new heights. It was the "I'm out" with Metallica moment for me.

@@LairoftheAlchemist I was out with the Black album for several reasons. I was a lot angrier at the time and I wanted heavier music. But at that time I had stopped listening to Maiden, Priest, Dio etc. years earlier in favor of Kreator, Sodom, Cryptic Slaughter, Obituary, Cro-mags, Agnostic Front, etc. And at the time it was hard being a "proud" metalhead and all of a sudden all these people who confessed to hate metal were liking one of my favorite bands. I know it's ridiculous but I didn't want to be associated with Metallica's new found poser fan base. I just didn't want to be identified with "those people". That bothered me more than the music of the Black album. Now being 50 it seems silly to disown a band based on their fanbase, but when you a young metalhead who's proud of their identity it was really bothersome to have people who really hated metal to like Metallica. I realize now that a band can't control who likes them. Looking back at the Black album now I see that album as a natural progression. It still sounds like Metallica, there are tons of great riffs on there, and the songs are well written. I don't think Metallica didn't anything different with that album than when Slayer in 1988 completely slowed down and simplified their sound with South of Heaven. I don't care because Slayer did it first. I wasn't a fan of South of heaven than and it's still one of my least favorite Slayer albums. I was really disappointed in that album because I loved Haunting the Chapel, Hell Awaits, and Reign in Blood. But Slayer fans will never admit that South of Heaven is Slayer Lite and it's Slayer's Black album.

Hysteria seemed like an album that was made directly for the digital/CD era. Even back then I thought it was too long and self-indulgent in the production. I still enjoy some tracks like Animal, and Rocket was a nice shout out to their classic influences, but you couldn't tell otherwise from the slick sounds on this album. Later, when Steve Clarke died it was all over for them as a heavier band. I've never felt interested in checking out any of their subsequent releases.

Def Leppard is probably my fourth favorite band of all time, and that is 100% due to the first 3 albums. I'm going to be completely honest when I say that I fucking hate this album. The problem with the album is not that it's commercial, Def Leppard were always a commercial band from the start, my problem is that almost everything I loved about the band is completely gone. No more distorted guitars or giant riffs, replaced with clean guitars playing forgettable solos and riffs, gone are the cool harmonies and shouted choruses replaced with those weird garbled choruses and most importantly, the band pretty much lost all their balls by firing Pete Willis, who was the guy responsible for the band's heavy sound. To add more salt in the wound, what would've been the best song on the album "Desert Song" got omitted because the band felt it was too heavy to be on the record
@mistymu8154
@mistymu8154 3 жыл бұрын
Every single song on the album, apart from maybe Hysteria has distorted guitars. Gone are the cool harmonies and choruses? That is one of the reasons why this album sold 20 million copies and so many people caught on to it, because of the melodies and harmonies. Pour Some Sugar On Me is the definition of a shouted chorus. I do agree, they have always been a more commercial band than the other NWOBHM bands they came up with, with slicker production from the start. I do find metalheads weird, they'll discard a massive selling albums, then justify it will opinions like the production sucks or the fact 20 million people purchased this record shows how dumb the average person is. Then in the next breath will defend a metal album with genuinely terrible production because they didn't "sell out".

That was the sign of the times though. A lot of good classic metal/hard rock bands started switching over to a more polished/commercial sound eg. Scorpions - Savage Amusement. Judas Priest - Turbo. I had Motley Crue's shout at the Devil, but that was the last Crue album I bought. I just gave up on that type of metal all together at that point and went full on into thrash metal and hardcore punk.

@Gregbaltzer
@Gregbaltzer 3 жыл бұрын
@@kevinputry5655 I agree, I felt like Thrash brought some credibility back to metal. The image of metal had become one of ridicule, it wasn't taken seriously(probably still isn't). It was all about dragons, wizards, and swinging swords, or guys like Poison/Cinderella singing songs about partying and sex. I felt like Thrash was bringing seriousness back into metal and they were singing about more the more social/political stuff. Stuff that I found to be more thoughtful. I felt like Thrash showed the world that the serious bands/fans had brains, and were more aware of what was going on in the world. Thrash had it's share of cheese, but I felt prouder to be a thrash fan because the subjects matter was more intelligent, and I related to it more than the cock rock attitude of bands like Motley Crue and their peers.

Yeah I get you about that record, though I had the exact opposite experience. Why? Because, for me, this is the most important record of all time….it was the first ‘rock’ album I ever heard and the one that got me into metal. Before Hysteria I was into Pop Music. Then, around ‘88 someone gave me a tape and told me to give it a listen. I was blown away. I’d never heard anything like it before. I started to listen to Bon Jovi and Kiss and such. That was cool…but then I heard Slayer’s Angel Of Death and Metallica’s Master of Puppets in a late night radio rock show and the slide into Metal was complete. Slayer, Motorhead, Death, Obituary, Sepultura, Bolt Thrower, Exodus……..all because of that one tape a friend gave me one day. Metal.

Loved Pyromania. Hated the Pyromania synthetic drum sound. And both on Pyro and Hysteria, I hate the sound of the band "singing" together. Whether you want to call it singing in harmony, unison, or triple tracking. Mutt makes it sounds fake and colorless. Like revved-up white noise. Like, a high pitched "weeeshhhh". The opposite of, say, Van Halen or Journey vocal harmonies. Which sounded real had lovely tone.

@LairoftheAlchemist

That’s a good question actually, the hair metal that I like tends to be the early stuff, I think the problem I have with the hysteria and Adrenalize is that it just lacks the energy that the band had early on. They became a bit too slick and polished and radio rock for me.

I like Gods of War, Run Riot and Don’t Shoot Shotgun but the rest of the album doesn’t really cut it for me & pretty much everything after this sucks, apart from Retro-Active which I quite like, but it’s not a real album I guess. Seen a lot of negative feedback on Pyromania, but I really love that album - possibly my favourite🤘🏻

I was quite disappointed when I first heard it, as you say Pyromania was pretty good but Hysteria just seemed to have a bunch of plodding overproduced boring songs on it for the most part, Gods of War ad Run Riot probably the only two that I liked in any way as they were either a bit more epic or fast tempoed. I think your description of it sums it up nicely. The other really unfortunate thing about it was thta it then casued a load of bands to try to emulate the sound simply because it sold so many the perception was that if that's the case then we need to sound like that - step forward and take an embarrased bow Scorpions. And Leppard suffered form that too as I recall their follow up albums werent produced by Mutt Lange but they tried to get the same kind of sound but overall failed. The greatest disappointment of all for me though is that following the sad loss of Steve Clark they got in Viv Campbell but they still ploughed that horrible pop/rock furrow - where's the guy who played on Holy Diver and Last in Line?

Same way for me other than I liked the feel of Women. Loved the b-side. Got the album and was like? The only other album that I gave any hoots about after Hysteria was Slang. For some perverse reason, I liked that one.

Man, I couldn't agree with you more on this album - what a complete letdown for what was once such a promising Hard Rock/Metal band. This is one of those albums (and eras for this band) that I call "Pussy Rock" (sorry for the misogynistic name). Another once great band that down this rabbit hole (BIG TIME) is Aerosmith - they had that period where everything sounded like an amalgamation of Cryin', Crazy, Falling in Love (is Hard on the Knees), and I Don't Want to Miss a Thing

I was out at Pyromania. Def Leppard went rhythmically too simple and the majority of the songs were too dull for me. On Through The Night and High N Dry are still good rocking albums.

All hits from this record turned me off to even buy it. It sucks so bad compared to the previous 2, why even bother. It's like a kiddie music album, and not for any rocker alive since forever. They really gave me no choice but to hate the damn thing, and you could not be more right about it. Kid rock all the way man.

Interesting. When I heard “Women”, I thought “WTF?!” I really didn’t like the less hard rock vibe of it. Overtime, I’ve grown to like a bit more from this album, but I agree, I wish they just stuck with their harder sound from the first three albums. Too be honest… I actually like the “very dumb song” Pour Some Sugar On Me. It’s the poppy side of me I guess. The only album after this that I got was YEAH, but that was just covers.

Over produced. This and the follow up album. Try the band Heavy Pettin to relive the sound when Def Lep was actually fun. Just for fun watch Def Leppard's "Lets Get Rocked" live from the MTV 1992 Video Music Awards.

they were never considered metal like Iron maiden or Judas priest, the album that only had some hard rock metal songs were, Let it go , High n dry, wasted , On through the night. after that they were basically a pop metal band , with ballads like bringing on the heartbreak . Hysteria was just so mainstream. I'm still not a big fan of that album

That album was more a chick album women love to dance to pour some sugar on me that being said it’s to overly produced and mixed it doesn’t sound natural. But I have admit love bites is an okay ballad.

I hate that album. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is one of the worst songs ever. It's really everything that was bad about rock music in the late '80's. If only they had kept the formula from the previous record, it would have been fine. But this was just way too commercial and dumbed down for me. "Pyromania" struck a good balance between some commerciality and still retaining a hard rock edge. Although, "High and Dry" is still my favorite by the band.
