US MD student here. Finishing my first year. I am over 40. Please never think that your age is the limiting factor in deciding if you should medical school.

Dr. Gray: you should create a new show called “Application Guesstimation” where you sit with an applicant and review their application WITHOUT knowing whether or not they were accepted. Then, after thorough full review, you share your thought process behind why you think they were accepted or rejected, and you find out from them what their results were. I think it could be a new spicy season and might keep you on your toes to review applications like a committee to make a decision.

That’s my story, well, almost. I got my electrical engineering degree overseas, moved to the US in 2010, became a US citizen, worked as an engineer, and then got into management. I’m applying this cycle after taking 56 pre-req units and will continue taking classes until June of next year. Wish me luck! 😊

Going to med school means 4 years of no earning and being paid minimal salary for another 3-8 years depends on your specialty. It’s doable if medicine is truly what you are called to do. Rewards are there in the end. Learn delayed gratification and practice mental wellness. Remember it’s not a marathon, not a sprint.

I've always wanted to be an MD, due to my early childhood experiences. However, at 43 and making $200k in engineering as a mid-level manager, my wife said to get over this midlife crisis and get back to work
