People smile when they feel uncomfortable, afraid, nervous, unsafe, etc. To come on stage and be that vulnerable about your trauma at 14 years old alongside a mother who is so angry and unwilling to model forgiveness and healthy behavior... I do not blame her for smiling. It was uncomfortable and she likely did not feel safe. You know what the daughter did do though? The daughter TRIED. Which is more than I can say for the mother. She TRIED to reach out. She TRIED to apologize. She tried. Even though it likely was not comfortable. Please remember that this is a traumatized CHILD. It would behoove all of us to not pass judgement, attack, or hold her to adult standards, especially when they adults in her life don't even hold themselves to the same standard.

I grew up with a physically disabled parent who became restricted to a wheelchair at the start of my life. one thing that I know from my experience is that it’s more than chores. he would ask me to do chores that we both could do- but would make it my responsibility simply because being fully abled made the task easier, no matter how busy I was. and that’s acceptable every once in a while- but when you have a parent who recently permanently disabled, and hasn’t yet fully processed what that means- there’s this whole grieving process, mental health and social dynamic shift in their lives. my dad for example, had so much going on he didn’t consider how much he was putting onto me. He spent my childhood depressed, so my dad glued to the couch for hours not willing to shift to his wheel chair, would shout across the house for me to bring him things, water, soda, cigarettes, lighters, remote, phone, ash tray, snacks, full plates of food, whatever you name it. He’d do this all day, 7 days a week. eventually, when I was still pretty young he forgot what please and thank you meant. so he’s screaming my name across the house, and ordering me to grab something, and not saying thank you, multiple times a day. oh and if I said “in a minute” or “gimme a second” he say “do what I said, right now,” and if I ever said no, he would lose his mind call me everything under the sun starting with disrespectful and lazy through the R-slur and fat. it didn’t matter if I was busy with literal homework, he’d expect me to stop what I was doing and wait on him like a maid. when I got older I realized the disrespect for me and my time I became “disrespectful” right back. my mouth never got as lethal as this girls, but if it had I would’ve put my safety at risk, as my father had gotten violent with me for saying less. it was definitely more than chores because my chores where all still expected along with waiting on him hand and foot while he also expected perfection from a child because I was abled and it should be “easy.” I also noticed how the mom blew a fuse when the daughter mentioned mace and was using more intimidating communication tactics with her daughter in that moment and It was just way too familiar for me. as well the mother expecting the daughter to have adult responses mentally and emotionally while expecting her to stay in a child’s place socially. This may not be the same as my situation, but there is definitely so much more to this dynamic that I don’t think the daughter has the maturity or words to articulate yet. I hope they both get the long term help they need.

this show is sort of like therapy trying to help people. when i was forced into therapy at exactly her age because of many household issues that were out of my control, i sat there with the therapist smirking too. it’s a way to cope, she’s in survival mode and smirking and laughing is how she shows her suffering bc her household and nervous system taught her not to cry and put up walls exactly like the behavior her mother was displaying. it’s so insane how everyone wants to call her a brat when the mother is the role model. her family went through a traumatic event, and that little girl was the one who found her mother in that state. imagine being that young and seeing your mother physically wounded and having to call 911. imagine the panic she also felt. the whole household felt the same things. it’s not easy to go through something like that at any age, i can see it’s not easy for the mother at all but SHE admitted that when it all happened she started to become very angry with everyone; how do you expect her daughter not to display the same behaviors? the daughter didn’t have a safe space to process. clearly her mother didn’t have a space to process either, but at your early teens you don’t exactly know or can reach out for help, so her mother should’ve been the first to do so as soon as possible. please re-evaluate.

I think he tries his best to teach a lesson while not fueling the flames- he keeps the anger down so that they can have a meaningful conversation. It’s not as “entertaining” to see people work things out calmly, but it’s clear that both of those ladies have been hurt and he didn’t want to add to that by being overly harsh to them especially in front of an audience.

She needs Maury for this one. He’s coming from a place of trying to validate the girl. Therefore he can get her to realize her behavior. However tough love is needed here.
