I am very glad you recovered so quickly. Don’t take good health for granted. You wear the big red S, but there are illnesses that can take you down. With all of those punches, I did not see the Hawaiian Punch! Or the fruit punch. Do the ball tips open the spring pin ends and make it bind in the hole? Merry Christmas! Happy New Tool!

Very few punches, I have 7 that I know of, one is the first Metal Lathe Project I ever did in Junior High, a Center Punch that I got an "A" on. I later used that Punch when I was in the Structural Steel Business, after smacking it about a 100,000x I decided to retire it before I ruined it. Today it sits right up front in my tool rack on the wall and I see it every time I'm down in the shop.

Glad you're back. 67 punches. I have slowly been adding Starrett sets as time goes one - the sets cost more but are higher quality. The center punches are much harder than my 70s Craftsman punches - the Starretts make a better divot. Merry Christmas

I must have a couple hundred punches at least. Between leatherwork, metalwork, bladework, woodwork, mechanic work (shadetree) tinkering and hobbyist machine work, yeah, I accumulated a lot in the last 30 years or so. When I finished out bronze art professionally there was no telling what odd shape we'd need so we bought letter punches by the block and would grind them to whatever shape we needed. There's still a lot of those floating around in my shop as well as a lot of the ones you showed.

Punches are fun. I have a few: a roll set with about a dozen sizes, a few nail sets, a big steel drift, a few steel metal punches and two auto-punches. One is an antique that was in my grandfather’s toolbox, and a lightweight modern one that we all carried in the pocket of our fire jacket on my last department: we used them as glass breakers.

Back in the 1970's when OSHA became a law, some of the old mechanics that I worked with absolutely refused to grind down the mushroomed heads on their punches and chisels. They were just being contrary and had the attitude that nobody was going to tell them anything. Several of them had pieces break off but there were no serious injuries. Eventually they all ground down the heads when they thought nobody was listening to them whine about being abused by OSHA trying to protect them from themselves. I am sure that your sister will appreciate the new washing machine. Thanks for the video. Have a Merry Christmas

Good to see you on the mend Scout! I think there is a theory of relativity as to the correct ratio of punches/chisels to screwdrivers. Without counting, I think I have well over 100 punches/chisels as compared to over 200 for screwdrivers, so I think I'm probably at a good number there. 😂 A friend gave me a 5 gal. bucket about half full of old punches/chisels/files. I'll be going through that over the holidays to see what kind of treasures might be in there to clean up and add to the collection. Great video and Merry Christmas Scout!

On the recycled file punches, if you can manage to heat up the struck end with a torch till it’s taken on a deep blue tone, and then put the whole thing in hot sand to cool slowly, it will likely soften it up decently for regular punch tasks. However, it might be better to temper the whole thing back, as a fully hardened file is about as brittle as can be. I agree that it’s probably best to use them as detail picks or for woodworking.

Good to see you back in decent health sir. Punches, I have 50+ individual punches from garage sales, flea markets, and auctions where you bid and get a pail full of “STUFF”, but I also have numerous sets of punch sets in boxes, tool rolls, and canisters. I have made punches from round files and being somewhat careful not to possibly shatter the head end from hitting with a hammer I started using shrink wrap on the ends of those punches, I just cut a piece as close to the diameter I need about 1” long, install about 2/3rds of its length, shrink it, cut off the excess flush to the top, seems to work well for me. Thanks for the video, Merry Christmas young man.

They're a fun quick little restoration project that you can often do with hand tools only whilst sitting on a bench on a sunny evening !
