I am a tractor guy since 12 years old. Currently have a 40hp new holland that had a back hoe and with that rig I started a part time landscaping business in 2006. 3 years ago I bought a CAT 304 mini ex and last year a JD 325g. Almost bought a bigger tractor before buying the 325 but decided in the 325. I can’t over emphasize that the mini ex/skid steer will probably triple your income over the backhoe skid steer combo you have now. I like your channel very much. When I watch you use the skid steer to pull stumps or the backhoe to do anything I just cringe. Not saying you want to do this kind of work but if you do sell the tractors and buy a mini ex. Keep the 325. You will make more money and wish you had done it sooner.

Good video, to be honest stopped watching some channels due to so much expensive equipment can't related as an average homesteader. Good to see demos etc. but no way going into debt, may take more time or hire out work but debt at this level ( exception for business turning over lot of $ with equipment) just not exceptable . Good morning, Brock. Your channel is getting better with time, and changes are inevitable. I like your plan. It's very smart to reduce debt and still have machines to do the job. The 55HP tractor with a cabin is so nice. My 2038R has a backhoe, and I would need a mini-x if I sell it one day. I also spent over 50G with my 2038R. I should have bought a larger tractor with that money with fewer updates instead of struggling with my 2038R every day. I can't wait to see what tractor brand you will decide to have on your property.

That's the problem I face with pretty much everything I find, having something shipped across the country makes no sense as it costs just as much to ship as the item cost. Kind of what I ran into with buying pallet forks for my tractor from Messkick's. The shipping cost was ridiculous, granted I needed them and nobody in my area had them...but still expensive, and not even sub-compact forks so I lost about 100 pounds of my lift capacity, but I'm stuck with them now so I use them...however, a set of sub-compact forks would be awesome if someone in my area would trade yeah not likely LOL.

But do they both come with full tanks of diesel? :). Well, that's quite a change. And the closer one gets to being debt free, the better you feel. It's far too easy to get caught in the "I can make those monthly payments" credit trap. I dug myself out of that when I was younger and have managed to avoid getting back into it. I try to live by a modified version of the "If I can't pay cash then I don't need it" philosophy. I charge nearly EVERYTHING on my credit cards, but I get 1% back minimum and up to 3% on some purchases. I use a gas card that pays 5% on all fuel purchases and 2% at restaurants. I pay them off every month. Periodically I take that cash back money and use it completely irresponsibly :). I set monthly budgets for spending and defer the "fun" purchases when vet bills, home repairs, or whatever takes too large a chunk out of the budget. And if I do choose to spread out payments over time (VERY rarely) then I always use 0% financing like PayPal Credit or Affirm. Developing fiscal responsibility is something that should be taught more aggressively in schools, and hopefully by parents. Debt sucks, and credit providers do everything they can to pull you into it.

Types of equipment is a very personal decision. I see people in many forums telling people what they need or should buy. What features are "important" to me isn't even a factor for some other people. That skid steer is an awesome piece of equipment but on 20 acres if that machine isn't also making you some pretty decent money outside of your property then it is a very, very expensive piece to have if you are not simply extremely wealthy and consider that purchase as using "play" money. Plus, on twenty acres it won't take long before you have your property in the condition you want where certain equipment is no longer needed and for very infrequent projects it might be smarter to rent that type of equipment to do that one project. You also do enough outside tractor work, and with the grand kids, a factory cab on a larger tractor with a serious air ride seat, buddy seat and a/c I think you will come to appreciate very quickly. I would love to buy your tractor, BUT, I am going to have to purchase a new diesel truck this year to tow my equipment and RV. Can't swing both in one year. Appreciate you always being up front. Debt is a big thing that some people just don't see to worry about. I have 3 vehicles, all over 100k, all paid for. My truck is a 2011 and it is time to replace it. The hardest part is thinking about going into debt again for a truck. I can afford the debt, it just feels bad.

I'm only assuming, but I'm assuming YT is giving you income, maybe substantial in your overall income scope. There is a massive following of people with the 1 and 2 series john deere tractors. Who knows, maybe you'll get even more subscribers with the larger equipment. As I type this I realize, as long as the content is good people will come and stay. It just needs to be relatable, I think.

If you're interested in a smaller skid steer, I'd look at the ASV RT25, RT40, and RT50. They're very small and compact and much more comfortable and capable than the ones you stand on.

I’d buy a mini excavator before a mini skid steer. A mini excavator was one of my first machine purchases and it was amazing. Make sure it has a thumb.

In Texas CDL is only if you in commerce. People get confused all the time..if you a rancher with heavy equipment you would have to look into either Class B or Class A. CDL is way way hoops to get and maintain so unless you need it, stick to the regular CLass A or B. The classes have to do with GVWR of 26,001 LBS or more combined combination weight. Difference between Class B and A is Class A allows a trailer with a GVWR of 10K or more if the total combination weight is 26,001 or more. I wouldn’t even bother with a Class B, just go for a Class A.

He IS involved in commerce: essentially, income or profit is derived from the equipment that he is tranporting by or thru his activities he has shown on youtube, such as tilling gardens for money, brush-hogging a pasture, or charging to dig post holes. And as soon as he crosses state lines with even so much as a gopro to film that tractor at work in the next state, he's involved in interstate commerce with the equipment. Plus there is an income made from youtube itself. Income is income. The guvmint dont care if its Bobs Farm paying you to cut an acre of barley or KZbin paying you to produce new tractor videos shot at the latest Farm and Ranch show.

Just started watching his channel thought he was a farmer just showing what he does on his farm..Also all you have to say is you not for hire. It’s not what officer knows it’s what he can prove..For instance if you don’t have a VIN tag on a trailer, they can not use the number of lugs to say “Oh those are 14k lbs axles so GVWR on that trailer is 14k or 28k etc..” GVWR has to be confirmed with NADER sticker on truck, or VIN tag on towed unit. But original response was the question of commerce.. Also if you tow equipment to make money on a farm that doesn’t count. Now if you tow equipment like a backhoe for hire then that’s a different story..

Brock - I need advice and it might make for a good episode. Cutting grass on a large property, 20+ acres. I have a 40H tractor with a flail mower and brushhog. Does it make sense to run a $40,000 tractor at 2500 RPM for 10 hours to cut grass rather than buying a $5,000 commercial zero turn. The tractor approach seems inefficient and slower but I would prefer to use it vs buying another machine. Thoughts appreciated.

I have a smaller barn I think its a 24' x 36'....right now 3/4 of it is just a dirt floor soon to be 1/2 floor and 1/2 gravel. I have a Kubota BX2680, smallest tractor they make. I wouldn't want anything larger, with the space limitations I have, that Baumalite stand on mini-skid would be awesome in the shop, but don't have a PTO. So, kind of would be in the same boat you are....need 2 different machines, for different tasks in different conditions due to space. The Kubota does what I need it to do, granted moving stuff in my shop like my shop tools, I have to be extremely careful, and make 30 point turns to get stuff moved, but it works, and the tractor is about 3/4 of the way paid off....and will most likely be the only tractor I ever need and own. Right now I need a riding mower or zero turn...but my DTI ratio is out of whack so trying to finance or outright buy anything just isn't an option...so mowing becomes a chore in itself....mow with the push mower, or spend 15 minutes moving stuff around and installing my mid mount mower on the Kubota....it does a great job, but 15 minutes spent messing around getting the mower deck installed would have been 15 minutes I could be mowing....I did a test mow just mowing my front and back lawn was 40 minutes with the push mower (Ego 21" self Propelled). I'd imagine if I mowed the rest of my property it would take me most of a day with that mower having to wait for the battery to charge, etc.

My case I bought my tractor for my personal use, so its up to me to handle the financial side of it, where as a business typically buys and offsets their payments with the jobs they get and use that equipment for. Even then, its an expensive endeavor.

I'm self employed as well. I have no problem buying equipment if it allows me to get more contracting work and make more $$. But the equipment has to pay for itself, otherwise it has to go. But you have more than one business most likely. You have your KZbin business and your other business. So it becomes a balancing act. Still, if you are done with it, it should go. You will thank yourself as you get older. You can't work forever. Regarding emotional attachment to something like your JD Tractor. Take a lot of pictures of it. Stand next to it and have someone else take pictures. You won't forget it. I have some hobby equipment as well. But its not serious $$. I am debt free and have a bunch of money, making money, in ETFs and stocks. Once you see your money increase by 20% per year while you do nothing, you will be hooked! That's right. Put in 100K and the next year its $120K. My returns this last year exceeded that by a lot! That is better for me, my wife, and kids. The same situation works for most folks. Zero out the debt as much as possible while banking all you can and investing wisely.

I think that you should put the original cylinders back on the John Deere loader and backhoe. You have mentioned and now are on record as saying that it may not be safe lifting as much as those cylinders can lift. In today's climate of suing someone and winning, you don't want to be involved with that. In some cases, money can change the person you thought you knew.

To be honest he can't sell all the equipment because he don't own several pieces of that equipment, and what he says he owns he don't own, the bank owns it. So, hopefully he is able to sell what he has for what he needs to break even on the loans he has, otherwise he'll still be in the hole and the loan/finance company (JOHN DEERE) ain't gonna like that he sold the assets they loaned against.

Brock, Congratulations on your decision to go Dept Free and starting a retirement plan. Only speaking from my experience I live in a world of peace today, knowing I'm financially secure now if something were to happen to me preventing me from being able to earn a weekly income knowing my family will be secure financially. Life became much easier and enjoyable, not carrying around the stress I once did from being buried in dept. I do still have a balance on my mortgage, but know that if something were to happen, a few changes in my financial situation, I would be in good shape.

I applaud you on wanting to get out of debt and am right there with you in your thinking but isn’t being responsible with your money really at the initial point of purchase? Since you are the initial buyer, you are taking all the big depreciation. Would it not be better to just pay off all the loans and keep what you have? Even if you were able to get out from underneath of what you paid how are you going to finance the new tractor? Just curious at this point depending on how much you owe if it would not make more sense just to stick with what you have?

I bought these machines thinking I was going into business doing paid work for people. Actually my plan was always that it would be 50% doing work for people and 50% making videos After two years, what I found out is that I’m more successful and profitable making videos about the equipment and working on my own property.
