Back when this first came out the rock critics considered Don’s drumming “obnoxious”… I was thirteen and this was the glory hole of early metal as far as I’m concerned… Nobody gave a more moving, penetrating and exhaustion filled experience LIVE than these guys… period. I saw em three times… best damn band

Lyrically, my man Mark was preaching some major wisdom for a young man in his early 20s! "No matter how hard, you push on the door--it won't open without the key. Opportunity only knocks once--if you shut it out---its a sin!" I live by that!

The first timebI saw Grand Funk Railroad in concert was 1971 and I couldn't believe only 3 people were making all the music I was hearing. I swore there must have been musicians somewhere I couldn't see. But no, it was just the 3 of them and I felt the effects of that sound in my body for days.

I'm sure I heard this song before but I can't remember when so it must be forty plus years now since I heard it. I'm glad you reminded me of it Van. Don Brewer has always been an underrated drummer. I think you nailed it when you said his kit is small. Don does as much with that small kit that others do with a kit five times the size. I love your analogy in the middle of the song about not worrying about what others think of you. I'm going to steal that one. The end message was very well spoken as well. Clear and to the point.

Somewhere I've got the video of how to play Mean mistreater on piano, since Mark is the reason I became a singer, lead & rhythm guitar player, songwriter & first a fan of everything Mark ever wrote, he was tricked out of the band, twice & the Corporation,, while his 20 or 21 year old son was paraplegic, from a fall & friends deciding to put him in the back of the truck & continue to party. They were trying to prevent him from advertising at 1/4 the size of Mark Farner, formerly of Grand Funk Railroad. When he wrote 92% of the music & songs. Don the drummer's whittle ego couldn't handle the fact that Mark was the front man. Duh~ He's the fricking front man & reason without airplay until they had to change to a cleaner sound,🛏️a bit more pop, but Mark's music & message has always stayed the same, it's about love. He prayed to God in 71 during his nightly prayers, she asked God for a song to reach out to those that God felt needed it most. Turns out Vietnam Vets many credit this song for picking them up when they needed it most. As told to Mark after many concerts Vets relayed their feelings to Mark, whose never stopped playing or writing. Spent part of a decade doing Christian rock, but too many preacher's didn't want Mark singing in their church, either cuz of his long hair, a tribute to his Mother's Cherokee blood. He was given a chief's blanket from the Cherokee, pretty much their version of a medal of honor. Even though Grand Funk sold out 72,000 seats the same way as the Beatles did earlier in the 60's. The Beatles took 2 weeks, Grand Funk in less than 72 hours! A record that will stand, as Shea Stadium was torn down, some say from the melodic motion Grand Funk caused with as Mark called it Rock & roll soul that dared you to sit on your ass! He calls himself the cussing Christian, just released a 16 track live DVD with 2 music videos & 5 previously unreleased songs. His drummer & bass players have been black since Don said he wanted to quit in 76. Reality was his ego couldn't take Mark being front man. But Don's voice is good for a few songs & fine for the lower harmonies, as Mark always sang the higher notes. Don can scream high, but it's not a full voice, it's all head. Mark's sounded great with soul brothers & to him & most Grand Funk songs & fans are about love saying fuck Vietnam, let the politicians send their candy assed sons & we'd never have war. The Military Industrial Complex would have to start making something good for the world & be a value, not what Ike warned us about vin his 1960 farewell speech. Kennedy was going to end the Vietnam war, free the blacks from oppression & preventing them from voting, still being hung in the South by ignant tiny dicked haters. Who need to have their lack of manhood shown on TV, to shut their lying pie holesm The CIA has been funding black opps like 9/11 by selling Heroine, and meth, then Crystal Meth which went from 20% pure to 80 ot 90 predominately in black & Latino poorer neighborhoods & used oppressve laws to jail far too many black men, screwing with their children's lives, their wives & for pot, these drunk bastards stripped their rights to vote by making pot a schedule 1 drug. A drug that is and was back to Queen Elizabeth using it & many indigenous people for menstrual cramps, cancer pain & lack of appetite. I spent a year injecting myself 6 Nights a week for a year. Even with pot, I dropped from 175 which little fat, since I'd been working outside in the Phoenix Valley, where 115 in the summer is average, I don't care if it's dry or humid, that's hot. I got down to as low as 122, without pot, illegal but off the record one of my Dr's said I should try it. He didn't have to know I had been since I was 22, when you're jamming it lets you perform without caring that there's an audience, you want & need a responsive audience & you talk with them between songs, but for leads you escape in the music. Yes Grand Funk was known to smoke pot back in the day. They did benefits for hard drug rehabilitation & they'd check that whomever they were sending the checks were doing it right & it worked. Albums were banned for "People let's stop the war" a platinum album which in 72 was a big deal their first 10 albums before the drummer & keyboard player & bass player would say Mark's songs were too political. That's why they were the people's band. No race owned them. They're all 3 dmfrom Flint Michigan & heavily influenced by R&B & Motown, who alive then & now ain't? Before 9/11 poppy production in Aphganistan was at 10%, after a 20 year waste of trillions, cuz over 2.3 trillion was 'misplaced' by the Pentagon, a good trick when they're yearly reported budget was 900 million something. The afternoon before 9/11. I know the truth but realize after the 'war& poppy production? Back up to 90% Heroine so strong it releases all your endorphins & Dopamine Along with the Heroine you're hooked the first time & you'll never be as high as the first time Unless you get clean & hopefully don't take the dose you used to just to keep from being sick. America fricking lying rich through wars Republican politicians, who get out our get back in like Cheney who was being investigated or his ex company that he had millions of dollars of stock, ex my ass! When bldg 7 came down at 5:30 pm undamaged by any plane, at freefall speed. Rid sent out 40 truckloads from bldg 7, which just happened to be where all the records against Enron. In 2001 we're supposed to believe nothing was on computer. Yet cell phones worked from 42,000 ft? In 2001 I couldn't move from my bedroom to my living room in a Scottsdale without losing Cell service. Phones don't work today above 15 to 1800&, not till if they have satellite communication at cruising altitude the Captain allows electronic devices can be used. Then they have WI-FI on some. But none on 9/11. Back to Funk. They've got a professional recording from Shea Stadium, Don won't release it cuz Mark's the front man, well he wrote every song they played that night. When Mark spent 3 when he promised 2 years in the reunion tour, which was filmed in Detroit proceeds from the movie were supposed to go the the kids of Bosnia, again blocked by Don. He got Mark drunk & tricked a high school buddy, whose writing & front man singing & guitar , keyboards & harmonica energized every crowd & still does. Now he goes out with all American made everything & it's Mark Farner'e American band, which as a guitarist that played at least 10 to 12 or his songs from Spain to here, Mark wrote the chords and changes to American band, but Don asked for full writer's credit Mark obliged. He could cause then trouble playing his songs, but won't. He's said let's bury the bs & play as Grand Funk for th fans, no! Even to 20 million dollars! That's how big Don's ego is. They play with hired guitarist's & never advertise it's Mark Farner not in grand Funk. My ex & a drummer v& his wife we lasted until a sickly falsetto version of Closer to home. Not a word was spoken, we all got up grabbed our blanket & headed for the gates, even at $2 a ticket thx but no thx. Mean mistreater was written when Mark took delivery of his Suitcase Fender Rhodes, Footstompin music when he got his Hammond B3 a toady's nightmare! But a kickass organ with the spinning Leslie cabinets. Anything you want to know about Grand Funk, just ask. ricc75govikes@gmail.com or Mark Farner's material I've got it all & know links to everything out there. Mark's drummer was James Brown's last drummer Hubert Crawford, the H bomb. You think Grand Funk has soul hear Mark & his brother's in every way!

Interesting that the song I think is one their best hasn't been reacted to. Try, "Sin's A Good Man's Brother". Mark has many newer, live versions, but I think you should listen to the studio version first. The reason this band has made such a hit is they have truly bridged the Motown/rock. Since this band is from Flint, Michigan they were very influenced by Motown since they were within radio waves of the center of Motown to the world in Detroit. So you could even call this Detroit Rock. I'm sure that's where they got the FUNK from...... kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGS4p6qflql7hZY

They were probably the most soulful hard rock band of the 1970s. Their music and concerts attracted everybody---black and white, rich and poor, young and old. It was a cross section of North America that sold out Shea Stadium in 1971. Don't believe me---look at the crowd shots. Every demographic was there!

Excellent channel, great work! Here's what you can review next from the same artist (Grand Funk Railroad) The song is called Dues, as in I paid my dues. It has a bit of personal history with me, because it NEVER reached radio play (I don't know why, it's quite good) I found out about it by accident, one day I was riding by bicycle in the "barrio" (I was sixteen years old) while looking in a dumpster, I found an LP record (ask your parents an LP record fits about 45 min of music) by Grand Funk Railroad, I took it home, and this was my favorite song in the album. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIXapWagqNWLr6c
