People here get salty that Scotty praises Toyotas but it seems they fail to realize that Scotty has been a mechanic for so long and he has worked on so many brands and he's just going by what he has seen and experienced. Some of the people hating probably have fords or dodge that are giving them issues with 50k miles on the Odometer. This man knows more than most of you.

I like Scotty, he is very entertaining and seems like a decent guy. BUT his whole spiel is aimed at a very specific demographic. However some people, in fact millions of people, never own a vehicle for 20 years or rack up hundreds of thousands on the odometer. I never keep a vehicle that hits 100k + or is 5 years old. I regularly update and NEVER have any of the issues Scotty bangs on about all the time. Sure it cost money to buy cars and replace them, that is what a huge percentage of people do. It really takes the hassle out of owning cars. Of course for those who can't afford new and to regularly update then Scotty is your man.

i've seen 328i that last as well as the corolla, yeah sure, maybe the dash looks like a christmas tree for stupid minor codes, but the engines ran solid, the suspension was still solid. the transmission was solid. everything else you need to drive your car after that is wear items and will regularly need replaced.. now on the e4x series, they did do a stupid move and ran a module resistor ground through the tail lights which causes many a diagnostic headache, but once that became known and passed around for those particular issues, put in a new bulb, and it was fixed 90% of the time. we had one customer who just came in for oil changes and brakes on his E46 3 series had over 300K miles. and the plastic bits where falling off the car, but the main body of the car was still mint.

I've owned (6) Toyotas. (2) of them trucks. They're not perfect but they are very good and better than most. Only had (1) of those that I felt was sub-standard. ('80 Celica Supra). Scotty can't help but lean into his Toyota bias sometimes. The result of that (IMO) is that he's overly critical or wishy-washy about some other solid Japanese badges/marques. (Of which I've also owned (3)).

Yes, but new, if you take care of a vehicle it will take care of you. Our 2000 celica is super rusted. The rear brakes are bad. Rear wheel wells are just gone- rusted through. Exhaust fell down and we had to tie it back up. 150k miles and burns a good amount of oil. Heat shield is loose and rattles bad. Engine is misfiring on all cylinders. Engine shakes really bad below 1000 rpm. Sunroof is rusting through and the coating on it is yellow and racking. Taillight and antenna is leaking and the spare tire area is full of water because of it. In contrast, our 92 s-10 with 255,000 miles is needing small stuff replaced- parking brake cable, ignition switch, cassette player, speaker is iffy, water pump and heater core needed replaced. The truck is from down south so it doesn’t have much rust. When the engine runs it runs great. When you take care of a care it takes care of you. Our 65 impala was sitting the in garage for 30 years. We got new tires, replaced the gas tank, cleaned the inside, and now it drives. We need to replace the wheel bearings and ball joints as well as upgrading to a dual master cylinder but the thing drives and it is 60 years old.

Your spot on with everything you say about Japanese built Toyotas, one of my vehicles is a Toyota Landcruiser Prado ( in Australia) that was Bought new in 2006 and has travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres in absolute reliability, it’s near on shotgun proof and It still drives like it rolled off the showroom floor last week! Why would I want to sell it off? Sure it may not have all the bells and whistles you get in an suv these days but all that is is more things to go wrong, this car is a keeper and whenever something goes awry well I will have it fixed, these Toyotas are just so well made they really are fantastic if you look after them

Hi Scotty, some years of the 4Runners 3rd and 4th generation had serious issues with frame rust throughs. It got so bad that while Toyota never officially did a recall, they did authorize dealers to replace the rusted through frames. 4Runners have always been 100% manufactured in Japan.... No US frames were ever built. The Tacomas were another story. Most of the rust issues were of course in the central and Eastern part of the US and cause by corrosive elements used to control snow and ice. The problem was traced back to an inadequate coating that Toyota put on the frames. That and of course most of the claims were vehicles10+ years old. Toyota USA stopped the frame replacements around 2017 because it just didn't make sense to replace them on vehicles that were almost 20 years old. Even still today Toyota recommends aftermarket undercoating if you live in areas that have harsh winters. I live in Tampa FL and even I had my new 2023 4Runner undercoated and will repeat it every 2 or 3 years as long as I own the vehicle. I hope you and your wife are doing well :)

@@thinker2328 I had them use a product called "Fluid Film". This product does not really dry and stays a little tacky and provides some "self healing" properties when it get stone nicks and chips. It is very messy to apply and I would recommend that you have a shop do it. It does have some down sides - if they get overspray on any part of your exhaust system it will stink until it burns off. You also want to make sure all your drain holes are open and unobstructed. This product is sprayed inside the frame rails as well. It is not permanent and depending on conditions it does need to be reapplied. Mine has been on for almost a year and a half and it still looks good. There is a KZbin video where a guy tests several undercoating products in different conditions and makes recommendations. I couldn't find it though, perhaps you will have better luck.

It was very clean, no dents nor scratches and I love the V6 normally aspirated engine! It was made in the Lexus plant in Tahara, Aichi, Japan to pure perfection. I've been a Ford girl all my life but when Ford went woke, I got rid of my 2019 Edge and bought the 4Runner. With the body on frame, I will be adding rock sliders, got rid of the X-REAS and had Ironman 4x4 Pro Foam suspension with 3" lift added, new Raceline Bronze Ryno Simulated Beadlock wheels and KO2s. I have a new front bumper from AFN, laser cut and welded in Portugal that I still have to install. Overall, I am very happy with my 4Runner! Thanks for confirming that I made the right choice! 😁👍

Thanks for the review, and I agree 100%. I have the 2003 model, 165k miles, only very minor unscheduled repairs, never let me down, and as you said probably one of the most reliable cars ever made. A couple of comments and corrections, though: First of all, the early years did have a major rust problem. It was so bad that Toyota actually replaced the whole frame for free. Secondly, the USB ports are most likely not original, neither are the backup camera or the upgraded stereo. Third, did you mention the V8 that was availabale 2003 onwards for a few years? Now that is a smooth and powerful engine, albeit it has a timing belt to deal with, but day and night when it comes to torque vs. the V6 of the same vintage.

And why do I have to break my left wrist to reach the window controls? Do I have to leap over the protruding running boards so I don't get my pants filthy every time? And that's just the first week!

No, Scotty: Your verdict about the turbo charged 4 cylindre cars from Toyota isn´t quite correct. I had a 1998 LandCruiser 90 (also known as Prado) with the very reliable 3,0 litre turbo charged 4 cyl. engine. 25 years and 350 000 km did no harm to the engine at all. Over all fuel mileage (off road, on gravel roads, on paved country roads, on the freeway in Germany) was very good. Probably far better than the straight six and V6 engines from Toyota. I know of a man who has driven his 1998 LandCruiser 90 with the same 3,0 l turbo charged 4 cyl. engine over 1 million kilometres - with the same engine and same transmission! Well, I sold my dear LandCruiser 90 and bought a 2010 LandCruiser 150 with the 3,0 l turbo charged 4 cyl. common rail engine. This type of engine has become known for injector issues. However; after 14 years and 205 000 km, my engine runs as good as a brand new one - do you mean that I´ve only been undeserved lucky with my two 4 cyl. Toyotas...? 😉

@@AndrewFaust-x1e Can´t say so much about gas turbos (although I once had an awesome 1989 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler, that in fact also still is on the road!) - and nothing at all about US-produced turbos. But to claim that turbo chargers and turbo engines per se are crap, is more a prejudice than built on facts and real experiences. There may be good and bad turbos. The turbo diesels from Toyota in their LandCruisers and Lexus´ certainly belong to the good ones.
