That might have been true in the past. I have zero faith in the 1.4L four cylinder turbos they are putting into large cars now. There is no way those things are going to hold up over the long run. There won't be any drivers getting 300,000 miles on those. No possible chance of that without major mechanical problems.

Your spot on with everything you say about Japanese built Toyotas, one of my vehicles is a Toyota Landcruiser Prado ( in Australia) that was Bought new in 2006 and has travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres in absolute reliability, it’s near on shotgun proof and It still drives like it rolled off the showroom floor last week! Why would I want to sell it off? Sure it may not have all the bells and whistles you get in an suv these days but all that is is more things to go wrong, this car is a keeper and whenever something goes awry well I will have it fixed, these Toyotas are just so well made they really are fantastic if you look after them

I bought a Toyota 4runner in 1998. It still runs great. Just normal maintenance. But of course the plastic interior bits are breaking down and the clothe seats are pretty worn but other than that it is still on the road. It has a few dings from people running into me while on the road. People offer me money all the time for it.

Scotty, I'm glad you said the 4Runner because I recently bought my first Toyota a year ago. It's a 2017 4Runner Limited which had 94K miles (mostly highway). It was very clean, no dents nor scratches and I love the V6 normally aspirated engine! It was made in the Lexus plant in Tahara, Aichi, Japan to pure perfection. I've been a Ford girl all my life but when Ford went woke, I got rid of my 2019 Edge and bought the 4Runner. With the body on frame, I will be adding rock sliders, got rid of the X-REAS and had Ironman 4x4 Pro Foam suspension with 3" lift added, new Raceline Bronze Ryno Simulated Beadlock wheels and KO2s. I have a new front bumper from AFN, laser cut and welded in Portugal that I still have to install. Overall, I am very happy with my 4Runner! Thanks for confirming that I made the right choice! 😁👍

I am keeping my 2009 Landcruiser LC200 for the long term. The 4.5 litre, twin turbo V8 diesel has 320,000 km (200,000 miles), uses no oil and still gets under 10L/100km (24mpg). Never been near salt water and no rust. I dunno about the 4Runner, but I reckon the LC200 is the best car ever made.

Scotty is RIGHT! The mpg across several truck based models is pretty consistent. I’ve owned several since 1998. 4cyl, 6cyl, 8cyl all have gotten negligible differences in mpg (hand calculated) and the new ones will too, even with their neutered power plant.

Thanks for the review, and I agree 100%. I have the 2003 model, 165k miles, only very minor unscheduled repairs, never let me down, and as you said probably one of the most reliable cars ever made. A couple of comments and corrections, though: First of all, the early years did have a major rust problem. It was so bad that Toyota actually replaced the whole frame for free. Secondly, the USB ports are most likely not original, neither are the backup camera or the upgraded stereo. Third, did you mention the V8 that was availabale 2003 onwards for a few years? Now that is a smooth and powerful engine, albeit it has a timing belt to deal with, but day and night when it comes to torque vs. the V6 of the same vintage.

No, Scotty: Your verdict about the turbo charged 4 cylindre cars from Toyota isn´t quite correct. I had a 1998 LandCruiser 90 (also known as Prado) with the very reliable 3,0 litre turbo charged 4 cyl. engine. 25 years and 350 000 km did no harm to the engine at all. Over all fuel mileage (off road, on gravel roads, on paved country roads, on the freeway in Germany) was very good. Probably far better than the straight six and V6 engines from Toyota. I know of a man who has driven his 1998 LandCruiser 90 with the same 3,0 l turbo charged 4 cyl. engine over 1 million kilometres - with the same engine and same transmission! Well, I sold my dear LandCruiser 90 and bought a 2010 LandCruiser 150 with the 3,0 l turbo charged 4 cyl. common rail engine. This type of engine has become known for injector issues. However; after 14 years and 205 000 km, my engine runs as good as a brand new one - do you mean that I´ve only been undeserved lucky with my two 4 cyl. Toyotas...? 😉

Hi Scotty I've been watching your channel for a while and recently subscribed You have a great presentation and sense of humor.....I like the pics you put up when you laugh 😆 Anyhow, I have a 2020 Ford "Eco-Sport" with the 2.0 4 cyl. engine.....no turbo (Yay).....real Transmission, parking brake, and fairly free of tech stuff I traded in a 2018 Focus because of the stupid junk "CVT" transmission recall problem (I hate CVT's) 🤪 By the way, I had a 2010 Ford Focus previous to the 2018 and put 117,000 miles on it but the A.C. condenser failed and we thought we should go ahead and trade it in for a new one instead of dumping money into it 🤔 We've had the "Eco-Sport" for 4 years without any problems I just wanted to know if you had any thoughts about this model Also, we live in Florida.....is "traction control" necessary in our case? Should I just leave it on or turn it off.....I've heard so many opinions on the subject Thanks for all of your information Take care Dave

I have yet to see a new gen Tacoma in the wild and I live in the Portland metro area. I saw a couple dozen for sale on the lot last month when I took my Tundra in for service. Maybe nobody wants to pay a small fortune for a 4 cylinder truck???

"A V-6 has more torque then a straight 4". Interesting. I was taught that a straight engine of equal size offered better torque while a V engine of the same size offered better horsepower.

Not true. The first generation tundras are notorious for frame rust. I can put a hammer claw through the frame of my 02'.

I had a 3rd Gen 4 cyl, it was killer. 2000 4runner, guy ran a red and totaled me. I'm looking at a 2013. I really like the 3rd gen the best, but I want something newer that isn't 23 years old. 5th gen is supposed to be good.
