As I say in the video, easy to brush this off but really it was a huge error. I’m trying to highlight this for everyone to learn from and also for myself in order to maintain a high level of vigilance as the years wear on.
Something so small can end up putting the lives of the crew in danger. Well it did, I guess. Anyway watch the vid and let me know what you think.
Cheers, Riley.

Coming from a world of aviation, being a helicopter pilot, the growing risk you get with more experience over time is complacency. We refer to it as "maintaining a state of hyper-vigilance" while operating an aircraft, because the margins for error can get squeaky thin and the forgiveness of any mistakes in the sky is always 0. Life will find moments to throw at you, to help you check your level of complacency and those experiences are a chance to pivot in one of 2 directions: Denial and eventual death OR acceptance, vulnerability, internalization and constructive re-evaluation to get back into a state of effective hyper-vigilance. Because you never know if your mental state is working until it suddenly isn't. Sharing with the world the mistakes and errors we all make as humans, helps yourself and all of us conduct ourselves better. The FAA has a site where any pilot can go and describe the mistakes they made and it absolves them of almost all consequence (usually things that just remove your pilot cert) because the world of aviation knows that sharing the mistakes is how we avoid repeating them and growing better as an institution. I thank you sir, for your vulnerability and determination to remain vigilant.
@labradore99
@labradore99 2 жыл бұрын
How do you create a set of mental habits that will enable vigilance? I know for myself that while I drive safely while holding a conversation, I often can't navigate while speaking. Obviously, sailing is a somewhat different matter because the rate of decision making will hopefully be lower than while driving, but the weather is constantly changing and there are always items to be managed, trimmed, monitored, etc.

I disagree (And so does Riley whuxh is why. He understands the consequences of his inattention and is lucky it didn’t end in disaster). He’s the captain - an error like that one is criminal. His role is exactly the same as an airplane pilot’s. Not sure you’d tell an airplane pilot to not worry.

@johnnytheprick Laughter and trying to ridicule me to deflect attention from your own mistake does not change the fact that you were wrong about the real cause of Riley’s anger with himself and how close they came to danger. Hi Riley, I can relate to the stress being responsible for the safety of the people onboard and the boat. I once hit a rock in my home waters which I was supposed to know so well. It was a horrible feeling although nobody got hurt and the boat just needed minor repairs. The feeling tho still gets me and I was so angry with myself as I was too sure about my knowledge of where I was. It did get better with time and a near miss like in your case is perhaps a good reminder of the risks. Good job analysing it!

Thank you so much for going public with this episode. After 11 years cruising USA East Coast and the Bahamas, this year coming into a dock with friends aboard and a group trying to raise a sunken dingy on the end of the dock, I lost concentration and came in way way too fast and at the wrong angle. I hit the dock hard enough to put an ugly gouge in our newly painted topsides to and jostle those aboard. I was gutted by how negligent I was. I am now hyper-vigilant to times when I am distracted from that paramount duty of safety, seamanship, and good boat handling. Thanks again for reminding all of us of the importance of diligence -- especially when having fun with family and friends.

Accountability. Just like driving a car, being a pilot, operating anything. Sometimes we let our guard down. Great job Riley and glad everyone is safe :-)

as a new nurse i highly relate to the feeling of making a mistake, however "small", and wanting to remember that feeling, being vocal about it, to prevent it from happening again. will miss sweet Sarah

Way to take responsibility, not make excuses, and not only learn from it yourself but share your story so we can all learn from it! You’re a fantastic captain. I would sail with you any day…

Wauw..! That evening sky on fire was unreal ❤‍🔥 I love meeting new people, but I hate it when either they or I have to move on, don´t you guys? Thanks for yet another glimpse into your journey in life 🥰👌 I´m really looking forward to see you o the new boat soon, and in new waters too. I hope you stay in the area for a while, visiting the beaches of Vietnam, Thailand and all the other beautiful places over there 🤞🏝🏖🌏🛥

One time I thought I may've holed our Cape Dory 27 was when I was not watching the chart while sailing very familiar water in Maine. Bam! What a wake-up call. But you can't beat yourself up too much. Your atonement is this excellent share.

I love this so much... From our perspective. Alot of times we forget your sailing with up to 7 souls on board and the seriousness of it all.... We are having a great time watching y'all have a great time .. But its all so much more "real" on the other side of our screens. I appriciate that you bring awarness that for the fun and games you have to be responsible and vigilant. Thank you for the more real side of your lives and what sailing can really be like. Lots-o-love from the States

I'm with you Riley. Beating yourself up is a teachable moment for others and a memorable learning experience for you. Your humility is power and a safe haven for all the souls you are responsible for. Well done and something to remember on a floating greyhound doing mach 3 in the not too distant future!

Your spot on with the Huge responsibility of safely navigating a vessel especially since your not solo. I’ve been a professional Captain since 2003 and a private boater before that. Let me just say you will make mistakes even if 100 percent vigilant. The idea is to not make avoidable mistakes and through Experience limit the mistakes you make. Every mistake is an opportunity to improve and learn. 20 years from now you will screw up. This is the nature of the game. You NEVER stop learning in the ocean that’s why it’s so fun and interesting. I screw up still. All good. Thanks for sharing it and keeping humble. Peace

Don't beat yourself up about it. You're young and still learning. I was a cop for 25 years, I know about realizing "what if's", constantly on guard, watching my back, others lives in my hands. It's hard.
