I have a degree in interior design and did it for a few years. 10% of that job is fun design, the rest is paperwork, client hand holding, and coordinating stressful deadlines. I ended up hating most of it and now I'm a full time artist and happiest version of myself 😁

I thought he was studying architecture? Seems like most degrees you eventually end up doing stuff you didn't study and weren't passionate about. I know a guy who is an Agricultural Architect. He helps people figure out what kind of plants they can put around their homes, that complies with the neighborhood's requirements. So he knows a bunch of plant species but also architecture and has to deal with regulations.

"What do I like doing?" I should have listened when I asked myself this at university. I invested a lot of time getting a software engineering degree. I could program and get some enjoyment with the problem solving. However, I always had this strange feeling that I did not belong there. I ignored those feelings and finished the degree because I was also scared for the future. After working as a software engineer for a few years, I made a lot of money but ended up burning out. My life went to shambles and I'm still trying to figure out where to go from here. Maybe I will go back to school and do something with mathematics and physics. Anyways, it's very good to hear that you decided to listen to yourself rather than that fear for the future. I wish you all the best!

I think I'm on a similar path as yours (web dev) what did you do on the burnout phase? Are you still working as a dev? Sending you lots of hugs bro
@paulkatarzis2231
@paulkatarzis2231 3 жыл бұрын
@@suddha1 I am no longer a software developer. I was working on new technology demos for the automotive industry. There were a lot of factors contributing to the burnout: employees leaving and being pushed to take responsibility for projects not suitable for my background, a blurring of work life and home life, dealing with petty office politics, receiving little feedback from managers, having a general feeling of no professional growth, and of course having very little passion for software development. It is strange that I did not feel like I was being overworked, but there came a point where it felt like I could not function anymore. Listen to your feelings and do what you can to prevent burnout. Recovering from burnout can be difficult.

Go Peter! I got a bachelors in painting, but I was extremely mentally unwell when I did it. I wanted to drop out and only finished because of pressure from my parents. I wish I had taken the time in my 20s to get mental health treatment and start a degree later in life, when I was ready. Now I’m in my 30s, doing way better mentally and I wish I could have a do-over for art school. Of course, it’s never too late to just make art.😎You’re an inspiration in going your own way, Peter. I can’t wait to see what you get up to with your homework! 💖

Also maybe Im reading too deep, but if indeed you are learning to accept your success as valid and worthy and becoming more comfortable to do what you love doing, as someone who grew up poor and was wokring class until only a handful of years ago, its a unique milestone in my opinion and deserves sincere congratulations and gratitude. Either way congrats and have fun Im looking forward to more.

I’m so proud of you Peter!! Art school is a lot of fun and very challenging. Art history class can be boring, but there are a lot of good art pieces to look at. Intermediate drawing is fun, youre past the fundamentals and can get into some different view points and learn some new skills. I had a lot of fun in that class. Lots of homework, don’t get overwhelmed. I recommend a planner and plan out your homework/projects. So you don’t get burnt out on art in general. Wishing you luck!!

All education is valuable, and even if you don't do architecture, what you learned in that program will make you more versatile and better at problem solving. Art school didn't do a whole lot for me, but I really didn't have a plan. You are going in to it a lot more clear-eyed. I wonder how many of your classmates will turn out to be fans! Good luck, Peter! Have fun. Learn lots!

Art school -- Computer Animation as it was called then -- was the best time ever of my life. You're right. Being around like minded people who are also artists adds to your joy and inspiration of/for art especially when some of those individuals have worked in the industry and... Now I'm starting to sound like the marketing department for art school. The point is you love art. Other people love art. Together with them your love of art ascends to a new level and it helps you feel more comfortable in your own skin... and you feel it more. Congrats on this decision. I'm looking forward to see your journey through your videos.

Peter, You are already successful! How many other students can say they have a successful KZbin channel with over 960,000 subscribers?! I’ve always encouraged people to get college/university degree because the classes challenge one to grow out of their comfort zone and realize they have more hidden talents than they realize. So congratulations on your decision to pursue a degree in art. You will be successful! And as another already commented, it will be fun to watch someone else do homework. 😊

Love the choice of ART school. I think you will flourish and I can not wait to see the things you learn creep into your style. I always say "What's the hurry..." I mean there is nothing wrong with being a lifetime learner and when you study what you LOVE why rush it? I wish everyone had the chance to just follow their passions and then find ways to make a living doing what you love to do. That ought to be a part of Highschool. a curriculum that helps you find your passion and then offers you, classes, to strengthen that passion and help you find avenues to make a living doing what you love. Look forward to this year of videos from you Peter!

I'm so happy for you in this decision, I think it makes a lot more sense for you. Art school is exactly the right place to learn how to make money doing art outside of KZbin, and I recommend suffering through at least one business class, if you haven't done already. Maybe your school has a class on marketing yourself worked into the curriculum, that's ideal. Anyway, so excited for you! I recently decided to apply to watchmaking school. I've been on disability and out of school or work since 2015, I'm very intimidated to be around people again, but also very excited about the learning. Take care, Peter!

I find it interesting how a lot of artists struggle to go to school for art, I started out working towards a biology type degree then switched to general studies and studio art. I had to take a few years off and decided to change to graphic design which has actually been really fun and beneficial. My semester starts in less than a week and they haven't decided what they are doing in terms of face to face or online. I'm excited for all the cool things I get to learn this semester and to see what art you create from your art school journey. It's very hard to make friends during the pandemic and I feel like many people have just given up/settled on only have acquaintances in classes, but I wish you the best of luck finding some cool artist friends!

Peter! I am just a couple years older than you but everyone changes their minds about what they want to do. I am a two-time college drop out and honestly, I couldn't be happier. I am glad you are still pursuing a degree but it just wasn't my thing. I had the most fun taking as many different art classes at a CC just to learn as many mediums as possible. Then I got to the point where I was using class time as studio time. The head of the art program (who I am still great friends with) recommended that I drop out because he could see that being in class was slowing me down. I am still an artist and I still make art but I do it for me, not for money. I have a fine Monday - Friday that pays the bills but I am hoping my KZbin channel can grow. Keep up the awesome work and enjoy all of that sweet German candy!

I took years and years of art classes - drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, etc. a college drawing class will have you working from life and the second year of it will start to bring different media and introduce color to your drawings. By the third year they’ll expect you to have developed a style and mastered working from life. You’ll start to work on expression and work yourself away from just the formalism of what you were taught and use it to communicate who you are and what you see.

I just started my last semester for my mechanical engineering degree. It's been so long and boring and the complete opposite of what I thought engineering would be. I went to college thinking I'd be learning how to build and create stuff so I could be like a Mythbuster one day (Mythbusters inspired me to learn about engineering and science) so far over the last few years all I've done is non stop math problems and I honestly hate knowing that I'm now so far in debt and nearly with a degree for a subject that I've almost grown to hate. I hope once I get a job outside college things will change. Best of luck with your endeavors Peter!

Structural engineer here! I think a lot of the creativity from engineering comes knowing how to apply dry technical knowledge to a wide variety of problems. You learn the fundamentals in school but the application won’t come until a couple of years out of college. I hope you’re able to find something you like doing AND pays the bills! It sounds like you’d like something more along the lines of industrial design or a more focused degree, like getting a PhD to specialize and do more hands on work.

Love ur videos, your art and your funny quirky nature. And thanks to you my fountain pen addiction is real! You've gotten me into drawing again, something I never seem to find the time for but lately thanks to you I have, so maybe I can give something back... Maybe... Art school will help in certain aspects for well roundedness. Making you do figure drawing, studies of heads and hands, composition,3d and give you a great exploration of things every artists wants to be exposed too (and the people are freaking awesome!). You have to do other garbage to fulfill the amount of credits it takes to get a degree. I LOVED my time at art school but i feel honestly its no longer necessary unless you want to get a masters degree to give you the ability to be a teacher. Which you are! But this will cost you a shit load to be able to do in a credited school and there's no guarantee after the fact so its something to consider. So if you want to take the skills you already have which weve seen in your art I think you'd be a fantastic concept artist for games and or film. IMHO in your work I see futuristic and organic environment designs, I see mechs, and vehicles that the norm dont come close to which puts you in a very unique position. Being different is what everyone wants. Explore the idea of what you want to do if you already had the skills (which for the most part you do).

I quit studying architecture for some reason, but I would say that universities are best for two things their libraries and assignments. I learned from these two a lot. I wish we all could access to a space where there is a huge library with books and articles and magazines, meanwhile having some guidelines and assignments for the projects that we are doing, then there won’t be any need for a university.

Hey, Peter! I was in architecture school too, did pretty good, but I did not enjoy it. I am so glad I quit before it was too late, and I hope you feel the same way!

Thanks for sharing your experience, I hope art school brings you joy! This video was actually very inspiring, I’m also in the midst of switching majors (except from political science to art, so a bit of a leap), and your words give me confidence that it is the right choice!

I'm just starting Art School this year as well, it's very scary and for a while I thought about avoiding college all together because I didn't want to do anything I didn't feel passionate about but was too scared to try out art school since in my country there's a huge chance I won't even get a good job afterwards, but since I do have a plan if that doesn't work out I said fuck it and went for it! I hope you have fun and learn a lot in your new journey, all the best!
