I'm mexican, my grandmother had an ancestor who was filipino, according to the records found in one of the Spanish Missions in Baja California Península, he was born in Manila in 1730. I've been asked if I am from Tailand, Japan or Filipinas 😮 after eight generations I got some asian features, I wonder if I took the test the result is going to come with just .2% filipino but my face says may be 10% 😅

This is so interesting! I did 23andme and it said I’m pure Ilocano from northwest Luzon. It makes sense because both my parents and their families are Ilocano from Ilocos Norte and Ilocos region. I need to do another one! Just to see if it’s the same! I’d like to speak with you at some point! Because I’m very interested to learn about our lost heritage as well. I’ve been watching Tagalog with Pat on KZbin and trying to learn Tagalog and I’m also going to Philippines this year! But again, thank you so much for sharing!!

My theory: Since I saw Spain on your DNA list - it could be that you may descend from Sephardic Jews who were instrumental in establishing a Spanish presence in the Philipines.
@TESZMillan9 ай бұрын
That would make more sense, right? But no… Ashkenazi!

@@TESZMillan agreed. It could also be what is known as 'noise'. I also had .02 percent far east native American while I'm 99 percent Askenazi. Umm.. doubtful.

A lot of Jews were force-converted to Christianity and just became mixed into the general Spanish population, so it's possible that's where it comes from. 23&me doesn't distinguish between Ashkenazi and Sephardic, or any other type of Jewish, they just call everyone Ashkenazi just FYI, so it still likely from Spain.

@@TESZMillan There was a theory that Ashkenazi Jews were not descended from the ancient Jews but from the Khazars, a Turkish people who converted to Judaism. However, DNA testing does not support this theory at all. Unfortunately, it lingers because it is used to discredit the Ashkenazic Jews descent from the ancient Jews and the Holy Land.
@stephenfisher37214 ай бұрын
Does either DNA test suggest the time of Ashkenazic Jewish ancestry? Could it be fairly recent? According to Wikipedia: The first permanent settlement of Jews in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial years began with the arrival of three Levy brothers from Alsace-Lorraine, who were escaping the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. As entrepreneurs, their business ventures over the years included jewelry retail, a general merchandising business, and import trade in gems, pharmaceuticals, and eventually automobiles. Along with them was another notable Jew from the Alsace region, Leopold Kahn, who became president and general manager of La Estrella del Norte and Levy Hermanos, Inc. Kahn also held positions such as the French consul-general to the Philippines, and president of the French Chamber of Commerce. The opening of the Suez Canal in March 1869 provided a more direct trading route between Europe and the Philippines, allowing businesses to grow and the number of Jews in the Philippines to increase.

It’s not an idea nor a contract. It’s simply that you did not opt to have a Filipino passport that is why immigration deems you not Filipino. If you want to fill up forms as Filipino then get your Filipino passport. If you would not, then simply accept that you will continue filling up forms as non-Filipino. It’s your choice. At least you know that you are 93% Filipino by blood even though you choose not to have a dual citizenship.

@@TESZMillan Christianity actively proselytizes even today. They want the whole world to become Christian. Missionaries might convert a whole group of people in one area but they are not mixed in with Christians from another area. Judaism did not believe in proselytizing. It did allow for conversion but Judaism was a very difficult and demanding religion. After Christianity took over, it was often against the law for a Christian to become a Jew and the same thing happened under Muslim rule. So for hundreds and hundreds of years Jews only married other Jews and they were usually at least distantly related. During my lifetime the situation in the United States has changed completely. The Reform Movement has changed the definition of who is a Jew and in June 2024 started to allow its Rabbinical students to marry non-Jews. When I was a child, very few Jews, even Reform Jews, married non-Jews. Today 70% of non-Orthodox American Jews are marrying non-Jews.
