@@fourcatsandagardenit depends on where you’re from, I wouldn’t call the Amish “famous” unless you’re referring to the reality show from TLC making them better known mainstream, and it’s definitely hyperbole to say “no one” knows who the mennonites are. Just over an hour outside Toronto, Ontario you hit farm country and a huge chunk of farms and businesses are all Mennonite run and their cooking and baking is legendary. There’s also new order mennonites who literally just seem like any other person you know and I’ve had friends, neighbours, professors, and colleagues who are Mennonite. The group you’re more familiar with definitely depends on where you were raised. In Canada the Mennonites are common and well known, they range from old order horse and buggy no electricity types to living very “normal” modern lives, and they personally gave me context for the Amish instead of the other way around.

Unfortunately, with the results of Wisconsin V. Yoder case, Amish children are actually limited in their rights to get a proper education and Amish schools do not need to employ accredited teachers. Its extremely common to have an 8th grade educated young adult teaching a school house of children from Amish made (and censored) school books. I wish I was being hyperbolic :(

What I find hilarious is that the writers knew that some amish communities are allowed to use some modern "outside world" items like generators (or maybe they didnt and just had this to make the stoey work) but not enough to know that if you leave the faith you're never allowed back and you're shunned from the entire community, including by your family. I read an autobiography by an ex-Amish woman and she did go back for her sister's wedding, so I'm guessing it depends on the specific sect. on one hand I find the romanticization of the amish astounding, cos I grew up near amish country and it is not romantic at all, but then I remember the whole 'tradwife' thing that's popular in conservative circles right now and it makes perfect sense. "women WANT to be pregnant and spending their days washing dirty clothes and cooking and cleaning house! that's what they find romantic!" (meanwhile the tradwives are starting to find out no, it sucks actually, and they're miserable, and while I do feel bad for them I also feel very 'we told you so, but you had to learn the hard way now here you are' about it too)

I mean...yeah, literally shunned, that's where the word "shun" comes from. From their perspective leaving the Amish lifestyle but trying to talk to your family is the same as a father "leaving for cigarettes" and then showing up twenty years later trying to be friends again; that person threw away their whole community and everything they stand for in order to live like a normie. Following the Amish way of life _is_ worship for them, refusing to follow is the same as quitting the religion; the Amish are a religion and their religious practice is "living Amish." This comment really rubbed me the wrong way; the problems in the Amish community are things like abuse and corruption, not "being religious in a way that doesn't appeal to someone who's not part of their religion."

He's the closest I've ever experienced to meeting a real life Disney prince, and he deserves to be bigger than he is (and also be in better things). I never saw him drink out of a mug, so I cannot make a comment on whether or not he forgot how to drink, but I'm pretty sure he was trying to do a "oh its so warm and I'm so cold" thing but it looked stupid because A. They could have easy made the family Mennonite and literally dealt with thr myriad of issues surrounding the breaking of Amish traditions/practices/etc while still keeping the vibe. Mennonites are allowed to have access to electricity/take photos and, as far as I'm aware but could be wrong, don't take the avt of Shunning as harshly as the Amish do. Additionally the Amish can habe their food photographed but nothing that copy/replicates faces as only God can create a face (which is why they dont have toys with faces). I come from a Mennonite community and while much of what you said is correct, going against the family by rejecting the faith, choosing the "wrong" career, or developing "worldly" opinions (among other percieved slights) still risk shunning or other forms of social discipline. Most Mennonites I know live in small towns, in regular houses, employed at local businesses, and retain their cultural distinctiveness primarily through maintaining extremist religious beliefs. So many Mennonites look like everyone else, but are still willing to shun members of their own community for religious reasons.

Keeping fruits fresh with lemon juice or vinegar is actually a thing, though, you just rinse the extra off. For example, to keep apple slices from oxidizing and turning brown, a little lemon juice soak (and then thoroughly rinsing after the soak) is perfect, and you shouldn't taste the lemon at all. :) Also if you want to make buttermilk items, like buttermilk biscuits, but don't want to keep buttermilk on hand, a little vinegar in whole or 2% milk will do the trick.

What’s difficult when it comes to Amish rules is that each group is different. It depends on what the group elders decide. So some are fine with cell phones for working and leaving them in the barn or turned off and never used in their home. Some are cool with generators in the home. Some are fine with some colors and patterns for women’s dresses. It all just depends. Which basically means some Amish are more ok with photographs than others. The very strict groups (like Swartzentruber Amish) are probably stricter about photographs.

that song you sang about being crazy for christmas reminded me of the movie "christmas mail," because the female lead is A. enchantingly jolly at all times except for when a guy she just met turns out to know other people so she freezes him out, and B. santa's only human daughter. so i like to think that as soon as christmas passed she completely changes in personality, leaving matt blindsided and confused.

i live in lancaster PA where we have a VERY large amish population and our county makes so much money off of tourism that they let amish people get away with whatever. drug dealing/growing, incest, severe animal/child abuse (kids especially and animals die all the time), as well as dumping literal shit into our rivers/creeks. i was charged with truancy and got a ton of fines at age 16 despite trying to drop out because i worked. meanwhile the amish only have to go to school until 8th grade and don’t have to pay taxes ever 🥰

Glad there are several other people correcting some of the misrepresentations of the Amish here. I’m here wondering why Rachel has a floral apron on? That’s not plain… And lots of Amish do have electricity in their houses because they use generators. There are a lot of modern workarounds of the rules to make life a little easier. It also depends on the parish and denomination. But I have always heard that they are not supposed to have their photo taken because it’s not humble. Again, probably depends on the parish and the bishop. -granddaughter of the Amish

Amish mfs make good food tho ngl. One time me and my friend came across this Amish store (which I didn’t even realize was Amish until we walked in lmfaoo we just needed snacks on a road trip) and they had all these home made candies and chips and stuff that were so good. And this cheese that was chefs kiss. They are more modern than I thought too they had electricity in the store and everything it was just like a normal store except everyone that worked there was Amish and dressed Amish.
