What would cause the spun bearing? Oiling problem? Overrevving? I thought these inline 4 engines were fairly bulletproof.

Low oil level or contaminated oil (dirt, old broken down oil, etc). Most of the time on the zx14r platform it's low oil level. You HAVE to keep oil level on the higher side on those bikes. It is pretty common to see #3 spun bearing on these bikes.
