This film really gets to me because it did and can happen. A fictional thriller isn't as brutal as one that can actually take place in every day life. Love Tom Hanks because he never plays the superhero. He plays the ordinary guy caught up in extraordinary circumstances.

Yeah but the real Captain Phillips was no hero, he's the one who got them into that mess by ignoring maritime warnings about that area being a hotspot for piracy. The first mate and the crew on the bridge disagreed with his decision.

I see a lot of comments about these pirates, the ship's crew and the situation in itself. I live in the middle of the Indian Ocean and Somalia is about 2,500 miles from our shores. At the peak of piracy in the Indian Ocean our livelihood was seriously affected and we had on a few occasions our countryman, mostly fishermens, taken hostages by these same pirates. They were taken to Somalia and held there. Our government had to pay quite a bit of ransom to have them freed. These guys were serious.

I find it amazing that they even doubled his pay after the movie was filmed since it's all done by contracts. Don't get fooled, this actor knew what he was going to get paid before production even started, and he agreed to the terms. If he thought it was too little he could have just not signed it, but he knows everyone starts somewhere. He was just too greedy after the movie finished and sold well.

I absolutely loved this scene when I was watching this movie for the first time. It was such a vivid, jaw dropping scene where you can truly see what life in the dystopian country of Somalia is really like. You can see this by looking at the "I'm the captain now" character. This character is extremely thin, almost no fat, and any weight he did have appeared to be muscle though it was not nearly enough and clearly indicates this man has went many days not eating his suggested 2000 calorie diet. Then on the other hand you have the Tom Hanks character who is healthy, hard working and clearly has more weight and appears to be a good balance of fat and muscle. This is where their two worlds meet, Tom Hanks is the character that appears to "have it all" while the Somalian gunman does not, he is a "have-not" from a very impoverished nation where his only hope of surviving as well as his family's only hope of surviving is to participate in risky raids such as this one.

They didn't really, Pirates want easy money, usually just stealing whatever they can hold from the ship. Then some warlord got ambitious and took and entire ship and crew and was payed big money for their safe return, When these guys couldn't get the ship or a large chunk of the crew they couldn't go back empty handed ($30,000 chump change) so in a panic they took the ships Captain. What they didn't realize was that the US Navy/ government was in no mood for ransom and wanted to show the world that Piracy and kidnapping was not going to stand.

I just don’t understand why someone couldn’t just run and push the ladder back down or pull the ladder up before anyone was on it. No way they’re getting on the ship then lol

This incident would never have happened if "Captain" Phillips had done his job as a Captain! There was a Notice to Mariners warning vessels to stay at least 600 miles off the coast!

After finishing the movie and rewatching this scene again. I can't help but wonder if it would have been better if they hadn't acted like the ship broke and stayed on it. The pirates would have a much larger area to defend so the US navy would have had an easier time getting on the ship unnoticed and taking the pirates out.

Many Movies May be Sci-Fi and Fantasy, but Anything Bad In Them Can Happen in Reality, including ones based off on True Stories like this one. Obviously, Movies of Any Kind Can Teach Us Anything. If you're gonna say they're just movies don't bother, I already know that. Still True tho.

a lot of comments about how little barkhad abdi got paid, especially compared to hanks, but it's fairly standard for an unknown actor. google tells me daisy ridley and john boyega were paid in the low 100ks for the force awakens, a much bigger movie from a huge franchise, and they at least had acted before. before you become a huge star and can command those salaries, it's ultimately a job
